Socioeconomic and demographic differences in exposure to environmental tobacco smoke at work: the Scania Public Health Survey 2000

Background: A study was undertaken to investigate the sociodemographic distribution of workplace exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in a Swedish working population sample. Methods: 8,270 individuals were assessed by questionnaire in the Scania Public Health Survey. The influence of sociodemographic factors on ETS exposure at work was investigated by multivariable regression analysis. Re

Responders and non-responders in a study on medical end-of-life decisions in Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland

Objectives: To determine the direction and magnitude of participation bias in end-of-life research. Methods: Within the framework of a European survey on medical end-of-life decisions, a non-response study was conducted among physicians in Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. People were asked about their attitudes and experiences in the area of medial end-of-life decision. The respon

Pooling reputations

It is shown that there are economics of scope in carrying a reputation, providing a rationale for multi-product firms in the absence of technological or organisational economies. It is also shown that a reputation for producing high quality of an old good may be necessary to introduce and maintain the production of a new good. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Physical activity and its effect on bone in the short- and long- term perspective.

Exempel på sådana benbrott är frakturer i kota, höftOsteoporosis is a growing problem worldwide where Sweden has one of the highest fragility fracture incidences in the world. The growing years are thought to be an opportune time to build strong bones and the enhancement of peak bone mass (PBM) has been suggested as a prevention strategy for osteoporosis. Most exercise intervention studies in children, evaluating the accrual of areal bone mineral d

Structure-activity relationships of ring C-secotaxoids. 1. Acylative modifications

The acylative modification of IDN 5390 (3a), a 7,8-secotaxoid under preclinical development, was investigated. A modest decrease of potency was observed upon acylation of the primary and the enolic hydroxyls, suggesting that, just like in paclitaxel, the hydroxyl groups in the upper right-hand sector are not critical for cytotoxicity. The activity of these analogues, and especially of the chemical

Review Article: Osteoporosis - an update

Osteoporosis and subsequent fractures is a rapidly growing major health problem in many parts of the world. Even if prevalence and incidence are high in Europe, rate of increase is even higher in Asia. The majority of fractures occur in women underlining the importance of ovarian deficiency. Genetic factors and lifestyle greatly influence the incidence and prevalence both in men and women and the

Fattigvård, socialbidrag och synen på fattigdom i Sverige 1918-1997

The purpose of the study is to analyse the poverty norm for single adults without children in Sweden between 1918 - 1997. The study analyses the full norm, not support given as an income supplement. The poverty norm is defined as the minimum level of a socially acceptable standard of living. The study investigates two problems: how has the poverty norm changed during the period 1918-1997 and why h

Development of a 2D Temperature Measurement Technique for Combustion Diagnostics using 2-Line Atomic Fluorescence

Popular Abstract in Swedish Vid avdelningen bedrivs forskning bl.a. med inriktning på laserbaserad förbränningsdiagnostik. The present thesis is concerned with the development and application of a novel planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique for temperature measurements in a variety of combusting flows. Accurate measurement of temperature is an essential task in combustion diagnostics, since temperature is one of the most fundamental quantities for the characterization of combustion processes. The techniqu

Nya gemensamma nordiska referensintervall inom klinisk kemi. Bättre bas för klinisk bedömning och samarbete

A project engaging the five Nordic countries has presented common reference intervals for the most frequently used biochemical and haematological analytes. The results are based on samples from up to 3000 healthy adult reference persons and are statistically calculated to include 95 % of the reference population’s values. Reference samples were analyzed together with commutable control materials t

Drum sound from floor coverings - objective and subjective assessment

En prediktionsmodell för den subjektiva responsen av trumljud vid en parvis jämförelse har tagits fDrum sound is the sound produced when an object, such as a foot, hits the flooring in the room in which the receiving ear is located. Drum sound has attracted interest in recent years, particularly due to an increased use of thin floating floor constructions, such as veneer or laminate flooring, which can produce loud and sharp walking sound. A prediction model of the subjective response, in a pai

BEAST decoding of block codes obtained via convolutional codes

BEAST is a bidirectional efficient algorithm for searching trees. In this correspondence, BEAST is extended to maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of block codes obtained via convolutional codes. First it is shown by simulations that the decoding complexity of BEAST is significantly less than that of the Viterbi algorithm. Then asymptotic upper bounds on the BEAST decoding complexity for three import

Study of the hydronium ion in water. A combined quantum chemical and statistical mechanical treatment

A combined quantum mechanical statistical mechanical method has been used to study the solvation of the hydronium ion in water. The system is divided in three parts, a quantum core (the ion), 89 classical water molecules and a dielectric continuum. The water molecules are represented using a polarizable potential. The first solvation shell of the ion consists of three water molecules linked by hyd

Rapid advance of spring arrival dates in long-distance migratory birds

Several bird species have advanced the timing of their spring migration in response to recent climate change. European short-distance migrants, wintering in temperate areas, have been assumed to be more affected by change in the European climate than long-distance migrants wintering in the tropics. However, we show that tong-distance migrants have advanced their spring arrival in Scandinavia more

Identification of phosphorylation sites within the SH3 domains of Tec family tyrosine kinases

Tec family protein tyrosine kinases (TFKs) play a central role in hematopoietic cellular signaling. Initial activation takes place through specific tyrosine phosphorylation situated in the activation loop. Further activation occurs within the SH3 domain via a transphosphorylation mechanism, which for Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) affects tyrosine 223. We found that TFKs phosphorylate preferential
