Recent studies have demonstrated that the combination of x-ray tomography during triaxial tests (”in-situ” tests) and 3D- volumetric Digital Image Correlation (3D-DIC) can provide important insight into the mechanical behaviour and deformation processes of granular materials such as sand. The application of these tools to investigate the mechanisms of failure in rocks is also of obvious interest.
Today most universities are using course evaluations. However, course evaluations are often discussed and questioned. This paper reports on a survey where we aim at finding out (1) if students have a preconceived notion of a course, (2) if course evaluation scores can be predicted early in a course, (3) if exam throughput impacts course evaluation, and (4) if web-based evaluation reflects the gene
Since the development of real-time PCR, the technology has been widely applied in the field of diagnostics. In comparison with conventional PCR it has opened up the possibility of accurate quantification of microorganisms in clinical, environmental and food samples. When employing real-time PCR and absolute quantification in biological samples, five important requirements should be fulfilled, name
Changes in the linear attenuation coefficient of polymer gel dosimeters post-irradiation enable the imaging of dose distributions by x-ray computed tomography (CT). Various compositions of polymer gel dosimeters manufactured from acrylamide (AA), and N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide (BIS) comonomers and gelatin or agarose gelling agents were investigated. This work shows that increasing the comonomer

In the Western thought tradition, the tourist has not been a subject worthy of intellectual musings and philosophical deliberations. Indeed, the tourist has been portrayed in primarily derisive ways. Nietzsche's remark, "Tourists-they climb mountains like animals, stupid and perspiring, no one has told them that there are beautiful views on the way," epitomizes the dominant attitude. Why does the
We analyze the convergence behavior of iteratively decoded coupled LDPC codes from a complexity point of view. It can be observed that the thresholds of coupled regular LDPC codes approach capacity as the node degrees and the number L of coupled blocks tend to infinity. The absence of degree two variable nodes in these capacity achieving ensembles implies for any fixed L a doubly exponential decre
