A class of piecewise affine hyperbolic maps on a bounded subset of the plane is considered. It is shown that if a map from this class is sufficiently area-expanding then almost surely this map has an absolutely continuous invariant measure.

Hur ser smärtan ut? Smärtan känns. Det vet varje människa. Men hur förhåller det sig med dess synlighet? Går smärtan att avbilda? ”I wanted to paint the scream more than the horror”, förklarade Francis Bacon, smärtans och fasans okrönte mästare som på duk efter duk avbildade skrikande, ångestridna och vanställda kroppar. Och är det inte precis så det förhåller sig med våra försök att avbilda smärt
Miniaturized liquid chromatography nanoseparation in combination with minigel fractionation of human primary cell nuclei is presented. We obtained high-sensitivity and high-throughput identification of expressed proteins by subcellular fractionation and nanocapillary liquid chromatography interfaced to both electrospray ionization (ESI)- and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation (MALDI) tand
BACKGROUND. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a prostate carcinoma screening program in which serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were measured. METHODS. From a group of 20,000 men born between January 1, 1930, and December 31, 1944, 10,000 men were randomized into a screening group and 10,000 were randomized into a control group. Patients in the screen
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the degree of difficulty and quality of hernia repair, as perceived by the surgeon, and operative time on the reoperation rate. All hernia repairs performed during the period 1994-1995 at the Department of Surgery, University Hospital of Lund, Sweden, were recorded prospectively. The degree of difficulty and the degree of difficulty in relation to
District heating systems using cogeneration, as well as local fuel-based and electric heating systems for detached houses, are analysed. The analysis includes the whole energy system, from the natural resource to the end user, with respect to primary energy use, emission and cost. The end-use technologies studied are heat pumps, resistance heaters and boilers. It was assumed that the base-load ele
Photosynthetic electron transport is coupled to ATP synthesis. This process – photosynthetic phosphorylation – proceeds by several alternative electron-transport pathways in isolated chloroplasts. The question: ‘Which of these works in real life?’ has long occupied students of photosynthesis. Recent results from structural biology and genomics suggest that the answer is ‘All of them’. The interpla
Aims. To study the influence of low-intensity solution-focused family therapy with obese and extremely obese pediatric subjects on body mass index (BMI) z-scores and self-esteem. Materials and Methods. Fifty-four obese children, aged 6-17 years, were referred to an outpatient obesity clinic. The families received solution-focused family therapy provided by a multidisciplinary team. Height and weig
A recently developed method for quantitative assessment of regional lung ventilation was employed for the study of posture-dependent ventilation differences in rats. The measurement employed hyperpolarized 3He MRI to detect the build-up of the signal intensity after increasing numbers of 3He breaths, which allowed for computation of a regional ventilation parameter. A group of six anesthetized rat
Within the framework of an interdisciplinary project on the impact of climate and forest management on beech dominated deciduous forests, forest meteorological measurements are carried out within and above different beech stands (Fagus sylvatica L.) on opposite slopes of a narrow valley located in the Swabian Jura mountain range (south-west Germany). Referring to test plots on both slopes, the fol
In this paper, we analyse in detail two famous space weather events; a railway problem on 13-14 July 1982 and a power blackout on 30 October 2003. Both occurred in Sweden during very intensive space weather storms and each of them a few years after the sunspot maximum. This paper provides a description of the conditions on the Sun and in the solar wind leading to the two GIC events on the ground.
Change of HIV-1 coreceptor use has been connected to progression of disease in children infected with HIV-1, presumably subtype B. It has not been possible to discern whether the appearance of new viral phenotypes precedes disease development or comes as a consequence of it. We studied the evolution of coreceptor use in HIV-1 isolates from 24 vertically infected children. Their clinical, virologic
PURPOSE: The formation and spreading of market-, management- and individual-rights discourses into society, as well as the movement of consumerism, have paved the way for a transformation of the linguistic usage. The transformation suggests that the view of the care seeker has shifted from a waiting patient, via a consumer to a customer creating value. Another example of the process is that the fo
Cigarette smoking has inconsistently been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. One of the enzymes responsible for the detoxification of the carcinogenic compounds present in tobacco smoke is glutathione S-transferase-mu (GST-mu). The gene that codes for this enzyme is GSTM1. In this study, we evaluated the associations and interaction between GSTM1 deletion, smoking behaviour an
The protective effect of marriage on smoking has been extensively established in the literature. However, less is known about the dynamics of how smoking behaviour is connected to various marital life course events, and whether there are any gender discrepancies in this respect. In this article the connection between the marital life course and smoking is analysed from a stress-related perspective
Objective To evaluate the use of continuous amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) as a prognostic tool for survival and neurological outcome in cardiac arrest patients treated with hypothermia. Design Prospective, observational study. Setting Multidisciplinary intensive care unit in a university hospital. Intervention Comatose survivors of cardiac arrest were treated with induced hypothermia for 24 h. A
The projection of primary afferents onto spinal interneurons constitutes the first step in sensorimotor transformations performed by spinal reflex systems. Despite extensive studies on spinal somatotopy, uncertainties remain concerning the extent and significance of representational overlap and relation to spinal reflex circuits. To address these issues, the cutaneous projection from the hindpaw a
