Computer-controlled systems : theory and design (3 ed.)

Practically all modern control systems are based upon microprocessors and complex microcontrollers that yield high performance and functionality. This volume focuses on the design of computer-controlled systems, featuring computational tools that can be applied directly and are explained with simple paper-and-pencil calculations. The use of computational tools is balanced by a strong emphasis on c

Organized planar nanostructures from ligand-stabilized nanoclusters: a route to molecular nanoelectronic devices

In present work, we describe the formation and deposition of mixed Langmuir monolayers composed of inert amphiphile molecular matrix and guest ligand-stabilized metal-core nanoclusters. Such approach allowed obtaining the ordered stable reproducible planar monolayer and multilayer nanocluster nanostructures on solid substrates. The use of novel polymeric Langmuir monolayers formed by amphiphilic p

Inclusion of recycling in the assessment of buildings.

Environmental assessment of buildings has become an increasing research field and the methodology of LCA is increasingly used. In case studies, the phase after demolition is mostly either excluded or handled in a rather limited way. However, in the design phase, the aspects of future recycling needs to be regarded and by that the phases after demolition. Inclusion of these aspects in the assessmen

Not least, we believe in managerial learning. Further, the dominant conception is that managers, through reflection on experience, develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of their work, which in turn renders increasingly skillful managerial actions. Metaphorically, this learning trajectory can be described as a journey from stupidity t

Composing ad-hoc applications on ad-hoc networks using MUI

The MUI framework supports composition of ad-hoc applications from services available on ad-hoc networked devices. MUI is an open-ended framework, relying on migrating user interfaces and standardized data formats for connecting services, allowing existing devices to be connected to new devices without needing any pre-defined knowledge of their services. We illustrate the benefits of the approach

Foraging behaviour in benthivorous fish

Foraging is often associated with food intake but includes more aspects such as searching for and assessing food patches and evaluating the patch as good or bad compared to the rest of the environment. On top of that, a forager also has to surv

Water and Risk: Developing sustainable and resilient communities

Key Messages • Sweden has an ideal opportunity to become a more important effect, reflecting the views of several Swedish organisations active international partner in DRR and resilience activities, originating in this area. from its strong history of donor support and long engagement • Acting on this opportunity would enable timely Swedish in DRR. contributions to the increasing global debate on

In pursuit of a promise: Perspectives on the political process to establish the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden

On 28 May 2009, at a closed meeting in Brussels, ministers and state secretaries of education and science from several EU countries decided to build the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden. Or did they? It is common for big European science projects to be surrounded by secrecy and political deceit, but the ESS is extraordinary in its elusiveness. There is a remarkable lack of concrete

The effect of diluents on the formation rate of nitrogen oxide in a premixed laminar flame

New high-efficiency power cycles and environmentally friendly cycles have introduced combustion atmospheres that differ from the traditional hydrocarbon-air mixtures. Wet cycles, solid oxide fuel cell with a gas turbine (SOFC-GT), CO2 separation/capture and biogas combustion are processes that involve high concentrations of inert gases such as H 2O, CO2 and N2. These new combustion atmospheres hav

A Future for the Past of Desert Vernacular Architecture

Popular Abstract in English Vernacular (local) architecture is in danger and about to disappear in several parts of the world. What we call native, traditional and handmade will disappear gradually and then the true meaning of vernacular vanishes. The present thesis shows that the disappearance of vernacular traditional skills creates an increasing threat to the existence of desert vernacular archDesert vernacular architecture has always been the product of a sustainable building cycle. People inherited the traditional way of building from their ancestors and the knowledge was transferred and developed from one generation to another. Inhabitants responded to their environment and climate through trial and error in a way that satisfied their needs and aspirations to create a developing buil

Transfer-function approximations of the rainflow filter

The rainflow filter is a non-linear filter which can be used to eliminate small-amplitude oscillations in a signal. In this paper, two approaches for investigation of the filter by means of an approximating transfer function are presented. The estimates are obtained from rainflow-filtered spectral simulations. One method is based on clipped Gaussian processes, the other uses a spline interpolation
