A hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotyping PCR assay based on type-specific primers was expanded to include genotype 6a as well as genotypes 1a, 1b, 2a, and 3a. The nucleotide sequences of a 194-bp fragment in the center of the HCV core gene showed that the homologies between genotype 6a and genotypes 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, and 5 were 81.2, 82.1, 73.8, 77.3, 81.4, and 78.9%, respectively. A high degree of

The diffractive photoproduction of J/psi mesons is measured with the HI detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78 pb(-1). The differential cross section dsigma(gammap --> J/psiY)/dt is studied in the range 2 < < 30 GeV2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The cross section is also presented as a function of the photon-proton c

Objective. To describe factors associated with the development of stroke during long-term follow-up after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the LoWASA trial. Patients. Patients who had been hospitalized for AMI were randomized within 42 days to receive either warfarin 1.25 mg plus aspirin 75 mg daily or aspirin 75 mg alone. Design. The study was performed according to the probe design, that is

Objective. It has been reported that aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) may protect against dementia of Alzheimer's type and/or vascular dementia. However, co-morbidity and the dose of aspirin may be critical. A major indication for low-dose aspirin is prophylaxis after stroke and transient ischaemic attacks, conditions that may obscure an anti-dementia effect by the d

The iron production in the northern part of Skåne started around 1200 and ended in the 17 cent. In the medieval towns of Wä and Tommarp were smithies run by the king that took care of the tax iron and formed it into maleable and sellable forms and qualities.

Endothelial apoptosis plays an important role in atherosclerosis, and a direct proapoptotic effect of chemotherapeutics on the tumour vasculature, emphasizes the great potency of antiangiogenic therapy in the treatment of cancer. We investigated signalling pathways in endothelial apoptosis induced by the inflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF), the main target of which is the endo

En av finanspIn the first essay of this thesis, we examine whether the effects of fiscal expansions and contractions exert a symmetric influence on the relationship between fiscal policy and private consumption. Our results indicate a considerable asymmetry across fiscal expansions and contractions. More specifically, during fiscal contractions, transfers seem to influence private consumption in a neoclassical

Background: p21-activated kinase 1 (Pak1) phosphorylates many proteins in both normal and transformed cells. Its ability to phosphorylate and thereby activate the estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha) potentially limits the effectiveness of antiestrogen treatment in breast cancer. Here we studied associations between Pak1 expression and subcellular localization in tumor cells and tamoxifen resistance

A simple assay was developed to estimate functional mannose-binding lectin (MBL) levels in serum based on the principle of yeast-induced bystander lysis of chicken erythrocytes (ChE). The assay is sensitive to inhibition by ethylene glycol bis-(beta-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA) (which allows alternative pathway activation), ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), mannose,

Filial Children and Ageing Parents is an anthropological study of the politics and practice of intergenerational relations among Chinese Singaporeans. Contrary to idealized notions of solid Chinese/Asian family values, this paper attempts to unfold the strains and challenges of intergenerational family relations in everyday life. In particular, it examines the issue of filial obligations between c

-Glucosidases belong to families 1, 3 and 9 of the glycoside hydrolases and act on cello-oligosaccharides. Family 1 and 3 enzymes are retaining and are reported to have transglycosylation activity, which can be used to produce oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. Family 3 enzymes are less well characterized than their family 1 homologues and to date only two crystal structures have been solved. H

A detailed study of the positive parity yrast and yrare rotational bands in Rb-77 is presented. Using the reaction Ca-40(Ca-40,3p) and the EUROGAM I spectrometer, gamma gamma gamma coincidences enabled us to follow both bands over a large spin range and to measure many E2 strengths. The moments of inertia and transition quadrupole moments indicate that a more deformed band (epsilon(2) approximate

The status of experimental approach to Sn-100 and Ni-78 is reviewed. Revised single particle energies for neutrons are deduced for the N=Z=50 shell closure and evidence for low lying I-pi=2(+) and 3(-) states is presented. Moderate E2 polarization charges of 0.1 e and 0.6 e are found to reproduce the experimental data when core excitation of Sn-100 is properly accounted for in the shell model. For

An experimental and theoretical study of PdMn bimetallic systems formed on Pd(100) is presented. It is shown that a flat Mn monolayer can be formed at 90 K. A comparison of calculated Mn 3d density-of-states and experimental valence photoemission and x-ray-absorption results suggests that the monolayer is antiferromagnetic, in line with earlier predictions. A similar comparison for the Pd(100)-Mn-
