Adherence to isoniazid preventive therapy in children exposed to tuberculosis: a prospective study from Guinea-Bissau

OBJECTIVE: To assess adherence to isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) in children exposed to adult pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) at home. METHODS: Children were enrolled on IPT if they were aged = 1.0 mm. Children were included from the demographic surveillance system of the Bandim Health Project in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. The main outcome measures were adherence, completion rates and side effects dur

Paleomagnetic and geochronological studies on Paleoproterozoic diabase dykes of Karelia, East Finland-Key for testing the Superia supercraton

Paleomagnetic results are presented for two Paleoproterozoic mafic dykes in the Taivalkoski area in northern Karelia Province of the Fennoscandian shield where, based on K-Ar data, the crust has seen minimal effects of the otherwise pervasive 1.8-1.9 Ga Svecofennian orogeny. Within this study a new U-Pb baddeleyite age of 2339 +/- 18 Ma has been determined for one of the E-W trending dykes (dyke A

Pure rotational CARS measurements of temperature and O2-concentration in a low swirl turbulent premixed flame

Abstract in UndeterminedTemperature and relative O-2-concentrations have been measured using pure rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (RCARS) in a low swirl turbulent premixed flame. This lean flame burning methane has previously been investigated using laser diagnostic techniques and numerical modeling of flame characteristics. In the present work, single-shot RCARS measurements we

Improved design of proton source and low energy beam transport line for European Spallation Source.

The design update of the European Spallation Source (ESS) accelerator is almost complete and the construction of the prototype of the microwave discharge ion source able to provide a proton beam current larger than 70 mA to the 3.6 MeV Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) started. The source named PS-ESS (Proton Source for ESS) was designed with a flexible magnetic system and an extraction system able

Training activities on radiation protection in nuclear medicine in the frame of the EURATOM FP7 collaborative project MADEIRA

MADEIRA was a Collaborative Project cofunded by the European Commission through the EURATOM Seventh Research Framework Programme. It was structured into four scientific work packages, and its aim was to optimize the efficacy and safety of 3D functional imaging in nuclear medicine and thereby to reduce the radiation exposures of the patients while keeping or even improving the quality of the diagno

Legislating a Woman's Seat on the Board: Institutional Factors Driving Gender Quotas for Boards of Directors

Ten countries have established quotas for female representation on publicly traded corporate and/or state-owned enterprise boards of directors, ranging from 33 to 50 %, with various sanctions. Fifteen other countries have introduced non-binding gender quotas in their corporate governance codes enforcing a "comply or explain" principle. Countless other countries' leaders and policy groups are in th

Parental separation in childhood, social capital, and suicide thoughts and suicide attempts: A population-based study.

Studies of the association between parental separation in childhood and suicide thoughts and attempts are scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate associations between parental separation/divorce during childhood, and ever having had suicide thoughts and ever having made suicide attempt, adjusting for social capital and other covariates. In 2012 a cross-sectional public health survey was co

Need for improvements in physical pretreatment of source-separated household food waste.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficiency in physical pretreatment processes of source-separated solid organic household waste. The investigation of seventeen Swedish full-scale pretreatment facilities, currently receiving separately collected food waste from household for subsequent anaerobic digestion, shows that problems with the quality of produced biomass and high mainten

Sexual Risk Behavior, Sexual Violence, and HIV in Persons With Severe Mental Illness in Uganda: Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study and National Comparison Data.

We investigated prevalence of past-year sexual risk behavior and sexual violence exposure in persons with severe mental illness (SMI) in Uganda, and compared results to general population estimates. We also investigated whether persons with SMI reporting sexual risk behavior and sexual violence exposure were more likely to be HIV-infected.

Genotyping of human papillomavirus in triaging of low-grade cervical cytology.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate whether typing of human papillomavirus (HPV) among women with low-grade cervical cytology can improve the ability to identify women with cervical cancer or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade III (CIN III or worse). STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1595 women with low-grade cervical cytology participating in a randomized implementation trial of HP

Synchrotron excitation - field ionization studies of high-Rydberg fragments produced after inner-shell ionization of small molecules

We have studied the production of neutral high-Rydberg (HR) fragments in small molecules after inner-shell excitation and ionization. Such fragments were ionized using a pulsed electric field and resulting ions were mass-analyzed with an ion time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer. As an example, the results obtained at the C 1s ionization threshold of the methane molecule will be discussed.

Regioselective reductive openings of 4,6-benzylidene acetals: synthetic and mechanistic aspects.

The use of benzylidene acetals as protecting groups in carbohydrate chemistry is utterly important. The main advantage of benzylidene acetal is the ability for regioselective openings. 4,6-benzylidene acetal can be opened selectively under reductive conditions to yield either free 4-OH or 6-OH. There are a plethora of methods available for regioselective openings, but only a few of these are widel

Influence of urban planning regulations on the microclimate in a hot dry climate: The example of Damascus, Syria

Urban planning regulations influence not only the urban form; they also have a great impact on the microclimate in urban areas. This paper deals with the relationship between the urban planning regulations and microclimate in the hot dry city of Damascus. The main purpose is to highlight the shortcomings of the existing urban planning regulations. The microclimatic parameters necessary for the the

Colour vision: parallel pathways intersect in Drosophila.

In the last one hundred years, colour vision has been demonstrated in bees and many other insects. But the underlying neural wiring remained elusive. A new study on Drosophila melanogaster combining behavioural and genetic tools yields surprising insights.

The genetics of migration on the move.

Across a range of organisms, related species or even populations of the same species exhibit strikingly different scales and patterns of movement. A significant proportion of the phenotypic variance in migratory traits is genetic, but the genes involved in shaping these phenotypes are still unknown. Although recent achievements in genomics will evolve migratory genetics research from a phenotypic

The Combined Role of Galactose-Deficient IgA1 and Streptococcal IgA-Binding M Protein in Inducing IL-6 and C3 Secretion from Human Mesangial Cells: Implications for IgA Nephropathy.

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is characterized by mesangial cell proliferation and extracellular matrix expansion associated with immune deposits consisting of galactose-deficient polymeric IgA1 and C3. We have previously shown that IgA-binding regions of streptococcal M proteins colocalize with IgA in mesangial immune deposits in patients with IgAN. In the present study, the IgA-binding M4 protein from
