A Comparison of Ungerboeck and Forney Models for Reduced-Complexity ISI Equalization

This paper investigates the performance of reduced-state trellis-based intersymbol interference equalizers, which are based on the so-called Ungerboeck and Forney observation models. Although the two models are equivalent when an optimum equalizer is employed, their performances differ significantly when using reduced-complexity methods. It is demonstrated that practical equalizers operating on th

Improved nutrient removal using in situ continuous on-line sensors with short response time

Nutrient sensors that can be located directly in the activated sludge processes are gaining in number at wastewater treatment plants. The in situ location of the sensors means that they can be located close to the processes that they aim to control and hence are perfectly suited for automatic process control. Compared to the location of automatic analysers in the effluent from the sedimentation re

Dietary habits after myocardial infarction - results from a cross-sectional study.

Objective. Comparing habitual nutrient intakes in persons with a history of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and age-matched controls. Design. Cross-sectional study. Subjects. Men and women (525 cases and 1890 matched controls), aged 47-73 years, of the population-based Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort. Methods. Nutrient intakes were assessed by a validated modified diet history method. Body fatn

Effects of L-alanyl-L-glutamine dipeptide administration during 35 days of postnatal life on intestinal mucosa, bone properties, and performance of piglets in their early post-weaning period

The experiment was performed on piglets, divided into control and experimental groups The experimental group received orally, from the birth to the 35(th) d of life, 0.4 g/kg b.w./d of L-alanyl-L-glutamine dipeptide (Ala-Gln). One week after weaning the piglets were killed and the small intestine and bones were sampled for histological analyses. Measurements of bone physical and geometric properti

Stimulation of B and T cells activates expression of transcription and differentiation factors

During B and T cell differentiation and proliferation many genes are induced or repressed while certain genes are constitutively expressed. To investigate processes related to B and T cell activation, the gene expression of stimulated and nonstimutated Ramos and Jurkat cells was studied using cDNA microarray technology. Simultaneous analysis of close to 600 genes indicated highest increase in the

Theoretical study of water adsorption on the Ge(100) surface

We present first-principles density-functional calculations for the adsorption of water on the Ge(100) surface. The dissociation of water molecules into OH and H species is energetically favored over the molecular adsorption, where O forms a bond to the down atom of the Ge dimer, similar to the case of Si(100). However, on Ge(100) the energy barrier for water dissociation is calculated to be simil

Meniscal Tear - A Feature of Osteoarthritis

Tidigare studier har visat aMeniscectomy is recognized as an important risk factor for the development of knee osteoarthritis (OA), a disease that traditionally has been considered as a simple "wear and tear" phenomenon. However, despite numerous reports, little evidence has been presented that a limited meniscal resection, compared with a more extensive resection, reduces the risk of OA by preserving meniscal function. Why?

Derivation of the supersymmetric Harish-Chandra integral for UOSp(k(1)/2k(2))

The previous supersymmetric generalization of the unitary Harish-Chandra integral prompted the conjecture that the Harish-Chandra formula should have an extension to superspaces. We prove this conjecture for the unitary orthosymplectic supermanifold UOSp(k(1)/2k(2)). To this end, we construct and solve an eigenvalue equation.

I denna avhandling studThis thesis analyses Swedish gypsy policy between 1880 and 1970, as part of a larger sociopolitical project undertaken by the Swedish authorities to promote social order and stability. During this period, the treatment of marginalized groups was shaped by the same visions and objectives as for the population as a whole. Gypsies in Sweden have been subject to the same regulations for as other poor

Schizophrenia - progressive and massive decline in response readiness by episodes

Objective: To relate the pattern of neuropsychological impairments among schizophrenic patients to case history data and disease characteristics in a cross-sectional study of unselected patients, and to integrate these data with two previous longitudinal studies of neuropsychological impairments among schizophrenic patients. Method: One hundred consecutive schizophrenic patients were studied with

Effects of inhibition of PAF, ICAM-1, and PECAM-1 on gut barrier failure caused by intestinal ischemia and reperfusion.

BACKGROUND: The role of cell adhesion molecules and transmigration of PMNs through the endothelial barrier is probably essential in intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R)-induced gut barrier dysfunction. Although cytokines are released in I/R, it is unclear whether cytokines directly increase permeability or if this phenomenon requires both expression of cell adhesion molecules and PMN adhesion

Adhesive Joints in Timber Engineering. Modelling and Testing of Fracture Properties

Applications such as finger-joints, glued-laminated timber and glued-in rods are considered. The experimental studies include the testing of the fracture characteristics of wood-adhesive bonds, including both wood-to-wood

Quinohemoprotein alcohol dehydrogenase-based reagentless amperometric biosensor for ethanol monitoring during wine fermentation

This paper describes the development and optimization of an amperometric biosensor for monitoring ethanol in beverages. The biosensor is constructed by cross-linking a quinoprotein alcohol dehydrogenase (QH-ADH) to an Os-complex-modified poly(vinylimidazole) redox polymer using poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether. The optimum biosensor configuration was evaluated by changing the ratio between e

Resonant tunneling permeable base transistor based pulsed oscillator

A technology was developed to embed nm-sized metallic features in close vicinity to semiconductor heterostructures, which allows a direct integration of resonant tunneling diodes (RTD) inside the channel of permeable base transistor. A AlGaAs/InGaAs based RTD was grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), with peak current density either 70 or 120 kA/cm2. A fundamental oscillation frequency
