Is there a relationship between abdominal aortic aneurysms and alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency (PiZ)?

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the frequency of alpha 1AT deficiency (PiZ) is increased in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), and, to investigate whether aneurysmal stiffness and other clinical characteristics differ in AAA patients with and without alpha 1AT deficiency. METHODS: We identified alpha 1AT-deficient individuals by a monoclonal-antibody ELISA technique, in 102 consecutive pati

Reduction of vanadium(V) with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans

Biotechnological leaching has been proposed as a suitable method for extraction of vanadium from spent catalysts and oil ash. In the biological leaching process, the vanadium(V) can be reduced to vanadium(IV), which is a less toxic and more soluble form of the vanadium. The present investigation showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans efficiently reduced vanadium(V) in the form of vanadium pent

High temporal resolution monitoring of fermentations using an on-line amperometric flow-through microdetector

An on-line microdetector containing amperometric biosensors was used for high temporal resolution (t(90%) approximate to 120 s) monitoring of glucose and ethanol concentrations during small scale fermentations. ne ability of the microdetector to report on the effect of different experimental conditions was tested in fermentation processes carried out at 30 and at 37 degrees C. An increased ethanol

Aspects of Sorption Processes in Thermosiphon and in Falling Film Arrangements

Den matematiska modell (en uppsättning ekvationer) soA study concerning closure relations pertinent to the design of sorption equipment of absorption heat pumps has been undertaken. Specifically, thermosiphon and vertical falling film arrangements were studied. For the thermosiphon, experimental data on the void fraction, the friction and orifice pressure drops, and the heat transfer coefficient at sub-atmospheric pressures were obtained for vapori

First-time mothers' satisfaction with early encounters with the nurse in child healthcare: home visit or visit to the clinic?

The aim of this study was to describe first-time mothers' views of satisfaction with their first encounter with the nurse, in order to investigate differences between home visits and clinic visits and between high/middle and low socioeconomic classification (SEC). A nation-wide postal questionnaire sent to 800 first-time mothers yielded the data for statistical analysis. Data were collected using

Action potential threshold elevation in the guinea-pig as a function of impact noise exposure energy

Eighteen groups of guinea pigs were exposed to a simulated impact noise for periods of 1.5-24 h. The peak level was kept constant at 131.5 dB and the repetition rate was varied to give seven different equivalent levels (Leq) between 96 and 117 dB. The auditory thresholds were assessed by electrocochleography after 1 month and compared with those of a control group. Significant damage occurred even

Lung cancers attributable to environmental tobacco smoke and air pollution in non-smokers in different European countries: a prospective study

Background: Several countries are discussing new legislation on the ban of smoking in public places, and on the acceptable levels of traffic-related air pollutants. It is therefore useful to estimate the burden of disease associated with indoor and outdoor air pollution. Methods: We have estimated exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) and to air pollution in never smokers and ex-smokers in

A study of the energy evolution of event shape distributions and their means with the DELPHI detector at LEP

Infrared and collinear safe event shape distributions and their mean values are determined in e(+)e(-) collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 45 and 202GeV. A phenomenological analysis based on power correction models including hadron mass effects for both differential distributions and mean values is presented. Using power corrections, alpha(s) is extracted from the mean values and shapes.

Regional integration and productivity growth: The case of the EU

Recent research has emphasised the role of trade in productivity growth. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate how regional integration, and the different treatment of member and non-member imports, affects the relation between imports and productivity growth. We focus on the European Union and find intra-union imports to have more of an effect on total factor productivity growth than

Multifocal electroretinogram for functional evaluation of retinal injury following ischemia-reperfusion in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) has the power to discriminate between localized functional losses and overall retinal changes when evaluating retinal injury. So far, full-field ERG has been the gold standard for examining retinal ischemia and the effects of different neuroprotectants in experimental conditions. The aim of the present study was to establish mfERG, with simultaneous

0250 Occupational exposure and stroke - A critical review of chemical and physical exposures.

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in developed countries, exceeded only by coronary heart disease and cancer. There is substantial scientific literature on the association between occupational exposures and coronary heart disease, but much less is known about stroke. This systematic critical review was performed to assess the strength of evidence for causal associations between chemic
