Dynamics of Energy-Efficient Technology for Commercial Buildings in Sweden: How much can really be achieved and how fast?

This paper discusses the results of a time-dynamic analysis of the possible effects of government and utility-sponsored energy-efficiency programs on electric energy use in Swedish commercial buildings. In the study, which includes efficient lighting, improvements in ventilation, commercial cooling and cooking, we use energy scenarios to analyse how policy measures can effect future energy demand.

Consumers’ value creating processes in distribution services for online shopping

Extended abstract Recent studies point at significant and ongoing technology induced changes in the retail landscape, creating new and interesting research avenues, new managerial challenges and a need to rethink existing business models (e.g., Burt and Sparks 2003; Kollmann et al., 2012; Sorescu et al., 2011). This paper aims at contributing to the literature concerning the managerial aspects th

Endothelium-specific ablation of PDGFB leads to pericyte loss and glomerular, cardiac and placental abnormalities

Platelet-derived growth factor-B (PDGFB) is necessary for normal cardiovascular development, but the relative importance of different cellular sources of PDGFB has not been established. Using Cre-lox techniques, we show here that genetic ablation of Pdgfb in endothelial cells leads to impaired recruitment of pericytes to blood vessels. The endothelium-restricted Pdgfb knockout mutants also develop

Defective paracrine signalling by TGF beta in yolk sac vasculature of endoglin mutant mice: a paradigm for hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant disorder in humans that is characterised by multisystemic vascular dyplasia and recurrent haemorrhage. Germline mutations in one of two different genes, endoglin or ALK1 can cause HHT. Both are members of the transforming growth factor (TGF) beta receptor family of proteins, and are expressed primarily on the surface of endothel

Measurements of optical properties of pig brain tissue in vitro using a novel compact device

In numerous medical and scientific fields, knowledge of the optical properties of tissues can be applied. Among many different ways of determining the optical properties of turbid media; integrating sphere measurements are widely used. However, this technique is associated with bulky equipment, complicated measuring techniques, interference compensation techniques, and inconvenient sample handling

Early Pregnancy Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution among Late-Onset Preeclamptic Cases Is Associated with Placental DNA Hypomethylation of Specific Genes and Slower Placental Maturation

Exposure to ambient air pollution during pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia (PE). Some suggested mechanisms behind this association are changes in placental DNA methylation and gene expression. The objective of this study was to identify how early pregnancy exposure to ambient nitrogen oxides (NOx) among PE cases and normotensive controls influence DNA methylation

130 years of colonial and postcolonial exhibitions in Denmark about The Danish West Indies

During the last 130 years, a number of exhibitions have interpreted and shown the Danish West Indies. The exhibitions are generally characterized by two tendencies: A rather romantic view on the colonial past with a strong focus on trade and the maritime. 2017 marked the centennial for the transfer of the Danish West Indies from Denmark to the United States. ;ore importantly, perhaps, it also mark

Generation of an induced pluripotent stem cell line (CSC-44) from a Parkinson's disease patient carrying a compound heterozygous mutation (c.823C > T and EX6 del) in the PARK2 gene

Mutations in the PARK2 gene, which encodes PARKIN, are the most frequent cause of autosomal recessive Parkinson's disease (PD). We report the generation of an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from a 78-year-old patient carrying a compound heterozygous mutation (c.823C > T and EX6del) in the PARK2 gene. Skin fibroblasts were reprogrammed using the non-integrating Sendai virus technology to

Symptom Relief and Palliative Care during the Last Week of Life among Patients with Heart Failure : A National Register Study

Background: Heart failure is a disease with high morbidity, mortality, and physical and psychological burden. More knowledge about the care provided for patients with heart failure close to death is needed. Objective: The aim was to describe key aspects of palliative care during the last week of life in patients with heart failure, as reported by healthcare professionals. Design: This is a nationa

Variation in breeding phenology in response to climate change in two passerine species

Increasingly warmer springs have caused phenological shifts in both plants and animals. In birds, it is well established that mean laying date has advanced to match the earlier food peak. We know less about changes in the distribution of egg-laying dates within a population and the environmental variables that determine this variation. This could be an important component of how populations respon

Rapid response team activation prior to in-hospital cardiac arrest : Areas for improvements based on a national cohort study

INTRODUCTION: Rapid response teams (RRTs) are designed to improve the "chain of prevention" of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). We studied the 30-day survival of patients reviewed by RRTs within 24 hours prior to IHCA, as compared to patients not reviewed by RRTs.METHODS: A nationwide cohort study based on the Swedish Registry of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, between January 1st, 2014, and Dece

Balancing selection on the complement system of a wild rodent

Background: Selection pressure exerted by pathogens can influence patterns of genetic diversity in the host. In the immune system especially, numerous genes encode proteins involved in antagonistic interactions with pathogens, paving the way for coevolution that results in increased genetic diversity as a consequence of balancing selection. The complement system is a key component of innate immuni

Design and evaluation of non-planar material extrusion on A3-axis printer

The use of material extrusion (MEX) has increased rapidly due to the affordability of 3D printers. This has led to a growing demand for improved print quality, high fidelity, strength, or fast print times. In this study, a non-planar approach for better surface quality is investigated. The hardware of a 3-axis MEX printer was developed together with testing new software for non-planar slicing. The
