Robust Decision Analysis under Severe Uncertainty and Ambiguous Tradeoffs : An Invasive Species Case Study

Bayesian decision analysis is a useful method for risk management decisions, but is limited in its ability to consider severe uncertainty in knowledge, and value ambiguity in management objectives. We study the use of robust Bayesian decision analysis to handle problems where one or both of these issues arise. The robust Bayesian approach models severe uncertainty through bounds on probability dis

Conditions for Reconciliation: Narratives of Survivors from the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract in Uncoded languages Namen prispevka:Namen prispevka je analizirati ponovno podane izkušnje 27-ih preživelih vojne v Bosni in Hercegovini v 90-ih letih prejšnjega stoletja. V pripovedih smo pregledali verbalne znake sprave in pomiritve ter analizirali opisane izraze za spravo. Metode: Gradivo za raziskavo je bilo zbrano s kvalitativnimi intervjuji 27-ih posameznikov, ki so preživeli vojnoPurpose: The aim of this article was to analyze the retold experiences of 27 survivors from the 1990s war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I have examined verbal markers of reconciliation and implacability and analyzed the described terms for reconciliation that are being actualized in the narratives. Design: The material for the study was gathered through qualitative interviews with 27 individuals who

Long-Term Outcome of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Using Absorb Bioresorbable Scaffold : A SCAAR Study

Background: Bioresorbable scaffolds have been associated with inferior outcomes compared to contemporary permanent metallic drug-eluting stents (DES) for percutaneous coronary intervention, particularly within the initial years after implantation; however, their long-term performance remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of Swedish patients treated with Absorb bior

Mot bakgrund av en pedagogy-historical and a women’s historical contThe aim of the dissertation is to analyse, in the light of the history of education and of women, ”biographical sections” of the life and work of the Swedish educationalist Honorine Hermelin Grønbech (1886-1977). The focus is on adult education, and in particular female civic education, which set out to encourage Swedish women to exercise their newly won rights of citizenship (1921). The publicat

Polarization in the reaction to health-risk information: a question of social position?

Dissemination of risk information is ubiquitous in contemporary society. We explore how individuals react in everyday life to health-risk information, based on what they report in personal interviews. Health-risk information was without exception recognized as unstable and inconsistent. This conformity, however, did not extend to the narratives regarding how health-risk information should be handl

Worldwide Oil Prize, Desalination and Population Growth Correlation Study

In this paper, the investment in new desalination capacity, expressed as daily production capacity, was studied as a function of oil production and population increase for a large group of countries for the last 25 years. These countries were selected for their large desalination production and Sweden presented as reference. Oil production correlated well with investments in new desalination capac

Value of the SHM system in the context of risk-based inspection planning

Risk-based inspection (RBI) planning is concerned with the optimal allocation of deterioration control which is based on the pre-posterior analysis using the Bayesian decision theory and the expected utility theory. It has been widely used to make inspection and repair strategy in the field of civil engineering and infrastructure systems. Nowadays, with the developments of sensing and inspection t

Homelessness and risk of end-stage renal disease

To identify homeless people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who were at highest risk for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), we studied 982 homeless and 15,674 domiciled people with CKD receiving public health care. We developed four risk prediction models for the primary outcome of ESRD. Overall, 71 homeless and 888 domiciled people progressed to ESRD during follow-up (median: 6.6 years). Homeless

The Use of Quotations in Discourse about Ethnicities

Examples from Czech and Swedish conversations illustrate how conversationalists use quotations when they define their own identity and when they speak about the identity of the others. The analysis is based on Tannens concept of constructed dialogue where direct quotation is seen as the creation of the speaker rather than the party quoted. The results indicate that quotations can be used strategic

Refugee livelihoods in Egypt and Lebanon

Beyond conventional relief efforts, gaining a more detailed picture of constraints, resources and risks encountered by refugees as well as of the meaning differing circumstances have for the concerned individuals may serve as a basis for developing more organised and collective responses to ensure social security in conditions of forced displacement and migration.Syrian refugees live very diverse

Adverse Lipid and Inflammatory Changes in Young Nondiabetic First-Degree Relatives of Type 1-Diabetic Patients

Background: Previous studies from our and other centers on young patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have indicated pro-atherosclerotic changes in the carotid arteries and in the lipid and systemic inflammatory profiles without a clear relationship between these changes and the hyperglycemic control. We have also earlier found in these patients a certain HLA-related genetic susceptibility to adver

Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services

När arter minskar eller försvinner riskerar vi även aModern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can effici
