The transitional landscape of urbanity - territorial and visual challenges in the urban periphery of Malmö

The greater cities’ outer transitional zones are ephemeral and dynamic. With Malmö (Sweden) as an example this paper discusses how coastal and agricultural landscapes in the urban fringe can develop into something new and closer to actual needs of the inhabitants. This is done by opening up for a use of new concepts when describing these areas, for example among planners/designers and exploiters.

Tools for protective lung ventilation. The elastic pressure-volume curve and aspiration of dead space

Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) may contribute to morbidity and mortality of acute lung injury (ALI). Lung protective ventilation (LPV), that reduces VILI, may involve low tidal volume (Vt). Particularly low Vt is possible if dead space ventilation is reduced e.g. by aspiration of dead space gas (ASPIDS). ASPIDS implies that gas rich in CO2 during expiration is aspirated through a separate c

Vertical transmission of a nematode from female lizards to the brains of their offspring

Parasites have evolved a diversity of lifestyles that exploit the biology of their hosts. Some nematodes that parasitize mammals pass via the placenta or milk from one host to another. Similar cases of vertical transmission have never been reported in avian and nonavian reptiles, suggesting that egg laying may constrain the means of parasite transmission. However, here we report the first incidenc

In this clinical case, the importance of early detection of Hurler syndrome for outcomes of stem cell transplantation in this patient population is illustrated. Nowadays, children with Hurler syndrome can be treated with stem cell transplantation, but the results largely depend on the moment of treatment. If the procedure is initiated in an early stage of disease, better results can be obtained. T

Evidence against atomiclike resonant auger decay in N2 doubly excited core states by high-resolution experiments

The resonant Auger decay spectra associated with doubly excited core-hole states near the N 1s threshold in the nitrogen molecule was measured. Electron-yield spectrum was obtained by setting a kinetic-energy window at 384 eV and scanning across the threshold region. At ground 410, 414, and 416 eV, photon energy, three dominant structures were observed. The increased signal-to-background ratio, in

Nuclear motion driven by the Renner-Teller effect as observed in the resonant Auger decay to the X̃2Π electronic ground state of N2O+

The nuclear dynamics in the Nt 1s→π* in nitrous oxide was studied using the high resolution resonant Auger spectroscopy and ab initio quantum chemical calculations. For probing the nuclear motion of the system in the core-excited state, the frequency detuning technique was used. The results showed changes in vibrational structure for the Auger decay spectra and a strong influence of nuclear motion

Present limitations of models for predicting chloride ingress into reinforced concrete structures

Models to predict chloride ingress are numerous but all of them have serious limitations that restrict the present use for long term predictions. An overview is given of the fundamental differences between various models, from those based on Fick's 2nd with constant or time-dependent diffusion coefficients and surface chloride contents, to those based on chloride transport equations with or withou

Referral Indications for Malignant Hyperthermia Susceptibility Diagnostics in Patients without Adverse Anesthetic Events in the Era of Next-generation Sequencing

Background: The introduction of next-generation sequencing into the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders has resulted in an increased number of newly identified RYR1 variants. The hypothesis was that there is an increased referral of patients to malignant hyperthermia units without a personal/family history of adverse anesthetic events suspected to be malignant hyperthermia. This retrospective mul

The comfort of alignment: Mining, green steel, and killjoy desires in Sweden/Sápmi

Med utgångspunkt i psykoanalys läser jag resursutvinning som ett begärsobjekt som människor söker sig tilThis dissertation deals with Swedish extractivism in Sápmi through the examples of a planned iron ore mine in Gállok/Kallak and the hydrogen-based steel transition. The main aim is to understand the trust that is placed in extraction as a means to arrive at a happy, prosperous, green future. Drawing on Lacanian psychoanalysis and Sara Ahmed’s notion of the promise of happiness, I suggest that extr

Minimal Optimism : Reading P. F. Strawson on Responsibility

Peter Strawson’s ‘Freedom and Resentment’ (1962) has reoriented the way moral philosophers think about responsibility. There is a general sense that Strawson’s approach holds the promise that we may move beyond the traditional discussion of free will in recognition of the fact that whether determinism is true is irrelevant for whether we are responsible beings. This is Strawson’s Promise. This the

Doppler interference in dissociative resonant photoemission

Resonant photoemission involving dissociative core excited states has been the subject of a great number of experimental and theoretical investigations in recent time. The resonant decay of such dissociating systems has been shown to lead to semiatomic Auger electron emission spectra, with particular angular behavior. In the present paper a detailed theoretical analysis of dissociative resonant ph
