Multi-Channel Acquisition and Visualization of the Dolphin Echolocation Beam – Instrumentation Design and Bioacoustic Results

Toothed whales (Odontocetes) use echolocation to navigate and find food in dark or murky waters. A wide range of innovative studies has since the 1960:s been used to characterize their echolocation beam and map out their echolocation skills. In order to render high quality recordings of the sounds emitted by these animals, advanced measurement systems are required. There are still interesting env

COPD and the risk of tuberculosis--a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and tuberculosis (TB) primarily affect the lungs and are major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. COPD and TB have common risk factors such as smoking, low socioeconomic status and dysregulation of host defence functions. COPD is a prevalent co-morbid condition, especially in elderly with TB but in contrast to other diseases k

Flame Sizes in a Small Scale Stack: Pilot Experiments

For the last many decades industry and insurance companies have been interested in protecting high racked goods from rapid fire growth. This has mainly been done by installing sprinklers of various types and designs in order to either extinguish the fire or control it. The efficiency of such protection measures is, however, very much dependant on the geometry of the stacks, their height, floor are

Remember the small giants - Occupational exposure and characterization of aerosol particles

BACKGROUND: Exposure to airborne particles in occupational environments can lead to both acute and long-term health effects in humans. To date, particle exposure limits in the air are typically given in terms of mass concentrations. But by only using mass concentration to characterize particles means there is a risk that other relevant characteristics, such as particle size and composition are con

The morselized and impacted bone graft. Animal experiments on proteins, impaction and load.

This thesis focuses on the healing and remodeling of the morselized and impacted bone allograft, commonly used in revision of loosened hip prostheses with osteolysis. The influence on remodeling by the impaction procedure per se was analyzed, as well as the effects of endogenous bone graft proteins, and an exogenously applied growth factor (OP-1). A bone chamber model in rats was used, with the in

Implementation of discharge recommendations in type 1 diabetes depends on specialist nurse follow-up

Aim: This paper presents an implementation study following previous research including a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of hospital-based home care (HBHC), referring to specialist care in a home-based setting. The aim was to evaluate whether the effects sustained when rolled out into wider practice. Methods: In 2013–2014, 42 children newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes were included in the study at

Carbon Ruins : An exhibition of the fossil age

Wages, income distribution and economic growth in Scandinavia

Wage restraint plays an important role in the conventional economic history explanation of the post-war golden growth experience of industrialized economies. Conversely, wage increases harming investment and increasing unemployment have been proffered as explanations for some of the high unemployment during the interwar period. This article argues that the conventional account implicitly only cons
