Gabapentin in traumatic nerve injury pain: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over, mufti-center study

A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over multi-center study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of gabapentin in the treatment of neuropathic pain caused by traumatic or postsurgical peripheral nerve injury, using doses tip to 2400 mg/day. The study comprised a run-in period of two weeks, two treatment periods of five weeks separated by a three weeks' washout period.

Lysozyme in catanionic surfactant mixtures

We investigate the competition between the associations of oppositely charged protein-surfactant complexes and oppositely charged surfactant complexes. In all systems examined, the most favorable complexation is the one between the two oppositely charged surfactant ions, despite the strong binding known, for example, dodecyl sulfate, DS-, to lysozyme. Thus, the phase behavior of the catanionic sys

Flare-up reactions after oral challenge with nickel in relation to challenge dose and intensity and time of previous patch test reactions

BACKGROUND: In this study we have taken an interest in systemic exposure to nickel in patients with delayed hypersensitivity to nickel. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to more closely investigate the importance of factors such as ingested nickel dose, time interval between nickel patch testing and oral nickel challenge as well as degree of nickel hypersensitivity in relation to flare-up reacti

Distribution of alkaline sphingomyelinase activity in human beings and animals. Tissue and species differences

The alkaline sphingomyelinase (SMase) was first found in rat intestinal brush border. The important roles of this enzyme in digestion of sphingomyelin and in mucosal cell proliferation have been suggested. In the present work, the distribution of the alkaline SMase in the tissues of human beings and animals have been studied. By assaying the enzyme activity in human biopsy samples, we found that t

IPVA-DNA cryogel membranes: Characterization, swelling, and transport studies

Double-stranded (ds) DNA from salmon testes has been incorporated into PVA hydrogels obtained by a technique of repeated freezing and thawing. The cryogels obtained are free of potential toxic species like chemical cross-linkers, and consequently, they can be used in pharmaceutical or medical applications. These cryogels show a good mechanical resistance and a white and opaque appearance caused by

Free volume and density gradients of amorphous polymer surfaces as determined by use of a pulsed low-energy positron lifetime beam and PVT data

Density gradient widths at the polymer-vacuum surfaces of poly(methyl methacrylate), styrene-co-acrylonitrile, and styrene-co-maleic anhydride were quantified to 2, 5, and 4 rim, respectively, by use of a pulsed low-energy positron lifetime beam and to approximately 1.5 nm for all three polymers on the basis of theoretical predictions from pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data, making use of the

Alkaline sphingomyelinase activity is decreased in human colorectal carcinoma

BACKGROUND: The metabolism of sphingomyelin generates important signals regulating cell proliferation and apoptosis. Previous studies found that the administration of colon carcinoma carcinogen was associated with an accumulation of membrane sphingomyelin, and that dietary sphingomyelin inhibited promotion of experimental colon carcinoma in mice, indicating that the abnormal metabolism of sphingom

Scanning tunneling microscopy study of metal-free phthalocyanine monolayer structures on graphite

Low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of metal-free phthalocyanine (H2Pc) adsorbed on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have shown ordered arrangement of molecules for low coverages up to 1 ML. Evaporation of H2Pc onto HOPG and annealing of the sample to 670 K result in a densely packed structure of the molecules. Arrangements of submonolayer, monolayer, and monolayer

GPR40 is expressed in glucagon producing cells and affects glucagon secretion.

The free fatty acid receptor, GPR40, has been coupled with insulin secretion via its expression in pancreatic beta-cells. However, the role of GPR40 in the release of glucagon has not been studied and previous attempts to identify the receptor in alpha-cells have been unfruitful. Using double-staining for glucagon and GPR40 expression, we demonstrate that the two are expressed in the same cells in

Growth and interactions of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in soils from limestone and acid rock habitats

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) development in different soil types, and the influence of AM fungal hyphae on their original soil were investigated. Plantago lanceolata, which can grow in soils of a very wide pH range, was grown in two closely related limestone soils and an acid soil from rock habitats. Plants were colonised by the indigenous AM fungal community. The use of compartmented systems allow

Increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-a in seasonal allergic rhinitis

Increased vascular dilatation and permeability characterize allergic rhinitis. In this study oligonucleotide microarrays (Affymetrix HuGe95A) were used to identify differentially expressed vasoactive genes in nasal biopsies from 23 patients with symptomatic seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) and 12 healthy controls. RNA was extracted from the biopsies and pooled in three patient and three control po

Reduced postural differences between phobic postural vertigo patients and healthy subjects during a postural threat.

Phobic postural vertigo is characterized by subjective imbalance and dizziness while standing or walking, despite normal values for clinical balance tests. Patients with phobic postural vertigo exhibit an increased high-frequency sway in posturographic tests. Their postural sway, however, becomes similar to the sway of healthy subjects during difficult balance tasks. Posturographic recordings of 3

Characteristics and Quality of Life of Patients Who Choose Home Care at the End of Life.

Cancer patients with advanced disease and short-survival expectancy were given hospital-based advanced home care (AHC) or conventional care (CC), according to their preference. The two groups were compared at baseline to investigate whether there were differences between the AHC and the CC patients that may help explain their choice of care. The patients were consecutively recruited over 2(1/2) ye

From Bugs to Decision Support – Leveraging Historical Issue Reports in Software Evolution

Popular Abstract in Swedish Utvecklare i stora mjukvaruprojekt måste orientera sig i enorma informationslandskap. Brist på överblick innebär ett hårt slag mot produktiviteten. Mönster ifrån tidigare buggar kan guida framtida underhållsarbete.Software developers in large projects work in complex information landscapes and staying on top of all relevant software artifacts is an acknowledged challenge. As software systems often evolve over many years, a large number of issue reports is typically managed during the lifetime of a system, representing the units of work needed for its improvement, e.g., defects to fix, requested features, or

Renal failure occurs in chronic lithium treatment but is uncommon.

We sought to establish the prevalence of lithium-induced end-stage renal disease in two regions of Sweden with 2.7 million inhabitants corresponding to about 30% of the Swedish population. Eighteen patients with lithium-induced end-stage renal disease were identified among the 3369 patients in the general lithium-treated population, representing a sixfold increase in prevalence compared with the g

Gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-deficient Te-110. II. High-spin smooth-terminating structures

High-spin states have been populated in Te-110(52) via Ni-58(Ni-58,alpha 2p gamma) reactions at 240 and 250 MeV. The Gammasphere gamma-ray spectrometer was used in conjunction with the Microball charged-particle detector. The high-spin (I>30) collective level scheme of Te-110, up to similar to 45h, is discussed in this paper. Four new decoupled (Delta I=2) high-spin structures have been observed f

Surface phase transition and electronic structure of c(5 root 2 x root 2)R45 degrees-Pb/Cu(100)

The c(5 root 2 x root 2)R45 degrees-Pb/Cu(100) surface phase is investigated by means of angle resolved ultraviolet photoemission and low energy electron diffraction in the temperature range between 300 and 550 K. We identify and characterize a temperature-induced surface phase transition at 440 K from the room temperature e(5 root 2 x root 2) R45 degrees phase to a (root 2 x root 2)R45 degrees st

Genetic bottlenecks and the hazardous game of population reduction in cell line based research.

Established tumour cell lines are ubiquitous tools in research, but their representativity is often debated. One possible caveat is that many cell lines are derived from cells with genomic instability, potentially leading to genotype changes in vitro. We applied SNP-array analysis to an established tumour cell line (WiT49). Even though WiT49 exhibited chromosome segregation errors in 30% of cell d

A literature review on fatigue among older people

Objective. The aim of the study was to survey existing research about fatigue among older people with chronic non-malignant pain. Method. A structured literature review was carried out using the Medline database. The terms ‘fatigue’ and ‘tiredness’ were used synonymously. These subject headings were combined with pain. A literature search was made in 2004 and included articles back to 1995. Resu
