The molecular basis of human igg-mediated enhancement of C4b-binding protein recruitment to group a streptococcus

Streptococcus pyogenes infects over 700 million people worldwide annually. Immune evasion strategies employed by the bacteria include binding of the complement inhibitors, C4b-binding protein (C4BP) and Factor H in a human-specific manner. We recently showed that human IgG increased C4BP binding to the bacterial surface, which promoted streptococcal immune evasion and increased mortality in mice.

Engineering of pyranose 2-oxidase: Improvement for biofuel cell and food applications through semi-rational protein design

Pyranose 2-oxidase (P20x) has several proposed biotechnological applications such as a bio-component in biofuel cells or for carbohydrate transformations. To improve some of the catalytic properties of P20x from Trametes multicolor, we selected a semi-rational approach of enzyme engineering, saturation mutagenesis of active-site residues and subsequent screening of mutant libraries for improved ac

TRIPS and Technology Transfer

Abstract in UndeterminedTRIPS is a trade-off between the interest of the developed world in having its technology respected and the need for technology transfer especially to the least-developed countries. But this balance of interests is poorly expressed in the Agreement, which is primarily devoted to protection of intellectual property rights and only marginally addresses the other side of the c

Serum proteome profiles in patients treated with targeted temperature management after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

BACKGROUND: Definition of temporal serum proteome profiles after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest may identify biological processes associated with severe hypoxia-ischaemia and reperfusion. It may further explore intervention effects for new mechanistic insights, identify candidate prognostic protein biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets. This pilot study aimed to investigate serum proteome p

Code-based Cryptography: Attacking and Constructing Cryptographic Systems

This thesis discusses novel results in the area of code-based cryptography, ranging from cryptanalyses on several code-based cryptographic constructions to proposing a code-based authentication scheme based on a novel Syndrome Decoding variant. To address the looming threat of large-scale quantum computers that wouldbreak many widely-used public-key cryptosystems, the National Institute of Stan-dar

We address the non-convex optimisation problem of finding a sparse matrix on the Stiefel manifold (matrices with mutually orthogonal columns of unit length) that maximises (or minimises) a quadratic objective function. Optimisation problems on the Stiefel manifold occur for example in spectral relaxations of various combinatorial problems, such as graph matching, clustering, or permutation synchro

Simulating Magnetized Plasma using an Accelerated Finite Element-Boundary Integral Code

This paper describes an accelerated finite element-boundary integral code with support for complex media. The code is implemented in Python using several open source packages, and uses Numba just-in-time compilation for improved performance. To accelerate the boundary integral part of the code, a multilevel implementation of the adaptive cross approximation is used. As a numerical example, scatter

Developing a Code of Ethics for the Swedish audit profession 1923 to 1994 - Juxtaposing the internal and external role of the Code

The paper presents an analysis of context within which FAR, the Swedish professional association representing accountants has developed and revised the Code of Ethics from 1923 to 1995. The purpose is to enhance our understanding of the choices made as to what ethical rules were verbalized or codified and the motivations behind the codification. Building on Birkett and Evans’ (2005) model for orga

Working with AIoT Solutions in Embedded Software Applications. Recommendations, Guidelines, and Lessons Learned

This chapter aims to be a broad introduction for embedded systems professionals that wish to add machine learning to traditional embedded software. It briefly describes the foundation for a stable and secure IoT communication platform, touching on important areas such as the MQTT protocol and data extraction. The discussion is based on a case study for a digitalized marine vessel, and focuses on g

Redox chemistry of a dimanganese(II,III) complex with an unsymmetric ligand: Water binding, deprotonation and accumulative light-induced oxidation

A dinuclear manganese complex {[(Mn2L)-L-II,IIII(mu-OAc)(2)]-ClO4} has been synthesised, where L is the dianion of 2-{[bis-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)amino]methyl}-6-{[(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2- hydroxybenzyl)(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)amino]methyl)-4-methylphenol, an unsymmetric binucleating ligand with two coordinating phenol groups. The two manganese ions, with a Mn-Mn distance of 3.498 angstrom, are bridged by the t

Modelling antibody orientation at bacterial surfaces

Det är känt sedan tidigare att några bakterier uttrycker proteiner med förmågan Bacteria and humans have co-evolved since their common existence. They have thereby developed very specific defence and target mechanisms against one another. Understanding the complex biomolecular processes behind these interactions can be of great use for developing treatments against bacterial diseases. The aim of this thesis project was to verify, and introduce a model for understanding, the i
