Without a working banking-system there would be no effective way to make payments and hardship would meet the credit-market. Some banks have been thought of as ”to big to fail”, although during the last years well-known international banks such as Leeman Brothers has been forced t

Warehouse stocks and replenishment A case study of stock levels at the National Distribution Centre, Arla Foods UK

The purpose of the master thesis is to optimize the stock holding levels of Arla Foods´ products in the National Distribution Centre in Leeds, by constructing a replenishment model for selected products. Deliverables: The focus of the master thesis has been to develop a replenishment model in order to better control and reduce the stock levels. Methodology: We focused primarily on gaining a deeper

SEAFLEX BUOY MOORING SYSTEM A Market Study in Sweden

Sweden is a country surrounded by water and consequently boating is one of the most popular spare time activities in Sweden. The active boating life, in turn, leads to a healthy boating industry in Sweden and boating production plays an important role for the Swedish industry. The company SEAFLEX AB in Umeå is one of these Swedish boating equipment manufacturers. Their new range of mooring product

Branding in Trade Unions - case of Unionen

Trade Unions are finding it increasingly challenging to appeal to employees and all trade unions alike are encountering new challenges to attract and retain members. Additionally a more diversified and educated labor market is creating demands for trade unions to better meet individual needs. The purpose of this study was to explore and analyze the role of branding in Unionen, the largest white-co

Modelling the impacts of future land use and climate change on ecosystem services in the European Arctic using LPJ-GUESS

Climate change and socio-economic developments are projected to intensify land use pressures in northern latitudes, potentially driving agricultural expansion into Arctic and boreal ecosystems. This thesis examines the consequences of future climate and land use change on ecosystem services in the European Arctic, focusing on vegetation dynamics, carbon storage, crop productivity, and biophysical

An Optical Sensor Network for Vegetation Phenology Monitoring and Satellite Data Calibration

We present a network of sites across Fennoscandia for optical sampling of vegetation properties relevant for phenology monitoring and satellite data calibration. The network currently consists of five sites, distributed along an N-S gradient through Sweden and Finland. Two sites are located in coniferous forests, one in a deciduous forest, and two on peatland. The instrumentation consists of dual-

Captured metagenomics: large-scale targeting of genes based on 'sequence capture' reveals functional diversity in soils.

Microbial enzyme diversity is a key to understand many ecosystem processes. Whole metagenome sequencing (WMG) obtains information on functional genes, but it is costly and inefficient due to large amount of sequencing that is required. In this study, we have applied a captured metagenomics technique for functional genes in soil microorganisms, as an alternative to WMG. Large-scale targeting of fun

Camouflaged or tanned: plasticity in freshwater snail pigmentation.

By having phenotypically plastic traits, many organisms optimize their fitness in response to fluctuating threats. Freshwater snails with translucent shells, e.g. snails from the Radix genus, differ considerably in their mantle pigmentation patterns, with snails from the same water body ranging from being completely dark pigmented to having only a few dark patterns. These pigmentation differences

How adaptable is the hydraulic system of European beech in the face of climate change-related precipitation reduction?

Climate warming will increase the drought exposure of many forests world-wide. It is not well understood how trees adapt their hydraulic architecture to a long-term decrease in water availability. We examined 23 traits characterizing the hydraulic architecture and growth rate of branches and the dependent foliage of mature European beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees along a precipitation gradient (855-

A predation cost to bold fish in the wild

Studies of predator-mediated selection on behaviour are critical for our understanding of the evolution and maintenance of behavioural diversity in natural populations. Consistent individual differences in prey behaviour, especially in the propensity to take risks ("boldness"), are widespread in the animal kingdom. Theory predicts that individual behavioural types differ in a cost-benefit trade-of

Nordic fathers’ willingness to participate during pregnancy

Objective: This study aims to illuminate expectant first-time fathers’ experiences of participation during pregnancy in three Nordic countries. Background: Fathers’ participation in pregnancy is associated with improved health for the family as a whole. Research so far has primarily explored fathers’ participation in pregnancy within health care settings. It is important to know more about how fat

Victims of Conservation or Rights as Forest Dwellers: The Van Gujjar pastoralists between contesting codes of law

The Van (forest) Gujjars, surviving as forest pastoralists in the central part of the Indian Himalaya, are a people who, due to their nomadic lifestyle, have since colonial rule found themselves at the margin of Indian society. This paper will look at the relationship between the Van Gujjars and their forest base in a historical perspective from colonial rule to 'conservation of nature' and the 'r

Simple process-led algorithms for simulating habitats (SPLASH v.1.0) : Robust indices of radiation, evapotranspiration and plant-available moisture

Bioclimatic indices for use in studies of ecosystem function, species distribution, and vegetation dynamics under changing climate scenarios depend on estimates of surface fluxes and other quantities, such as radiation, evapotranspiration and soil moisture, for which direct observations are sparse. These quantities can be derived indirectly from meteorological variables, such as near-surface air t

The Shadow Side of Migration: Exploring the Nexus between Undocumentedness, Informality and Crime among Uzbek Migrants in Sweden

This article discusses the relationship between undocumentedness, informality, and vulnerability to crime among migrants, using the strain theory as a conceptual framework. Research on victimisation and engagement in crime among migrants is limited, and existing studies tend to focus on one aspect rather than the interplay between the two. This study focuses on the experiences of the Uzbek communi

Modelling natural pest control across the world’s agroecosystems – an archetype approach

Control of crop pests by shifting host plant availability and natural enemy activity at landscape scales has great potential to enhance the sustainability of agriculture. However, mainstreaming natural pest control requires improved understanding of how its benefits can be realized across a variety of agroecologies. Empirical studies suggest significant but highly variable responses of natural pes

Increased water-use efficiency and reduced CO2 uptake by plants during droughts at a continental scale

Severe droughts in the Northern Hemisphere cause a widespread decline of agricultural yield, the reduction of forest carbon uptake, and increased CO2 growth rates in the atmosphere. Plants respond to droughts by partially closing their stomata to limit their evaporative water loss, at the expense of carbon uptake by photosynthesis. This trade-off maximizes their water-use efficiency (WUE), as meas
