Feasibility of energy justice: Exploring national and local efforts for energy development in Nepal

The energy justice framework serves as an important decision-making tool in order to understand how different principles of justice can inform energy systems and policies. The realization of the urgency of providing modern energy technology and services particularly to rural areas has prompted both the Nepalese government and development institutions to focus on community-run renewable energy faci

Understanding Poverty in Cash-crop Agro-forestry Systems : Evidence from Ghana and Ethiopia

This paper examines the linkages between cash-crop income and other dimensions of poverty to interrogate assumptions regarding the relationship between agricultural income and poverty alleviation. The analysis treats poverty as a multi-dimensional and socially disaggregated phenomenon. The paper employs a mixed methods approach to case studies of Ghana and Ethiopia to explore two critical issues.

Chemical Abundances of Main-sequence, Turnoff, Subgiant, and Red Giant Stars from APOGEE Spectra. II. Atomic Diffusion in M67 Stars

Chemical abundances for 15 elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni) are presented for 83 stellar members of the 4 Gyr old solar-metallicity open cluster M67. The sample contains stars spanning a wide range of evolutionary phases, from G dwarfs to red clump stars. The abundances were derived from near-IR (λ1.5-1.7 μm) high-resolution spectra (R ,F= ,F22,500) from the SD

5 ' flanking variants of resistin are associated with obesity

Diabetes and obesity have long been known to be related. The recently characterized adipocyte hormone resistin (also called FIZZ3/ADSF) has been implicated as a molecular link between impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and obesity in mice. A search for sequence variants at the human resistin locus identified nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) but no coding variants. An investigation into th

National research and innovation councils as an instrument of innovation governance

In the past decade, a growing number of countries have established national councils for innovation or for science, technology and innovation. The interest in innovation councils responds to a growing need for strengthening the coordination, inclusiveness and, ultimately, the effectiveness of innovation policy governance. In Sweden, the National Council for Innovation and Quality in the Public Sect

Mitochondrial genome from the facultative anaerobe and petite-positive yeast Dekkera bruxellensis contains the NADH dehydrogenase subunit genes

The progenitor of the Dekkera/Brettanomyces clade separated from the Saccharomyces/Kluyveromyces clade over 200 million years ago. However, within both clades, several lineages developed similar physiological traits. Both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Dekkera bruxellensis are facultative anaerobes; in the presence of excess oxygen and sugars, they accumulate ethanol (Crabtree effect) and they both

Australian physiotherapists' experiences of culturally safe practice and health promotion among Indigenous people - A qualitative study

Background The colonisation of Australia led to a lot of suffering and sorrow for an uncountable amount of Indigenous people. Due to the forced change of lifestyle and diet during and after the colonisation, conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes became commonly occurring. Still today there is a higher burden of these conditions, but also of depression and anxiety, in this group of people. Fu

The role of discourses in governing forests to combat climate change

Reducing emissions from forest degradation and deforestation, conserving and enhancing forest carbon stocks, and sustainably managing forests (REDD+) has emerged as one of the most anticipated climate change mitigation tools. This paper aims to understand and identify the underlying discourses that have dominated the emergence of REDD+, by identifying the key story lines in the policy and academic

Downstroke and upstroke conflict during banked turns in butterflies

For all flyers, aeroplanes or animals, making banked turns involve a rolling motion which, due to higher induced drag on the outer than the inner wing, results in a yawing torque opposite to the turn. This adverse yaw torque can be counteracted using a tail, but how animals that lack tail, e.g. all insects, handle this problem is not fully understood. Here, we quantify the performance of turning t
