Vacuum cleaner-effect in fungi can hold nanoplastics at bay

Using micro-engineered soil models, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have investigated the effect of tiny polystyrene particles on bacteria and fungi. While these nanoplastics reduced both bacterial and fungal growth, the fungus actually managed to “clean up” their surroundings, thereby easing the effect of the plastics. “Plastic waste is a huge global problem. Whether carelessly discarded

Organised prostate cancer testing is to provide more equal care

With 10,000 new cases a year, prostate cancer is the most common cancer type in Sweden. To create equal, accessible and high-quality prostate cancer care, Region Skåne has introduced Organised prostate cancer testing, OPT. "Anyone who wants to should be allowed to be tested for prostate cancer. Studies show that early detection lowers long-term mortality", says Anders Bjartell, one of Sweden’s lea

Pausing the SWEAH job for adventures in Africa

SWEAH's research administrator, Stina Elfverson, is taking a six-month leave of absence from October 1, 2024. She is going out and seeing the world. What are you going to do?– I will work as a tour guide, which has long been my "jobby" alongside work at the university. In the past I have traveled a lot in Asia and Europe, but now I am focusing on Africa and will visit Egypt, Madagascar and Namibia

Iron-based solar cells on track to becoming more efficient

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. An international study led from Lund University in Sweden shows that 30 per cent of the energy in a certain type of light-absorbing iron molecule disappears in a previously unknown manner. By closing this loophole, the researchers hope to contribute to the development of more efficient solar cells using this iron-base

NanoLund scientists mobilize against covid-19

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Due to the Corona pandemic, scientists all over the world have begun focusing on every aspect possible of the virus. NanoLund poses no exception. To detect a virus or other infectious agents, medical and clinical laboratories usually employ the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This method, invented 1983, is widely use

Reviewing our research infrastructure and information security

The focus in the autumn will be to outline the research infrastructure of the future based on the Krantz report, follow up the results of the University’s e-infrastructure inquiry and highlight information and IT security at LU. The transition from dean of the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) to pro vice-chancellor for research infrastructure and digitalisation has been an exciting experience. Excitin

Intensified focus on strategic issues in education

In the autumn, I hope we in the university management can focus on the core issues that we want to drive forward. It has been a very unusual start for the new University Management, strongly characterised by the ongoing pandemic. I hope that developments now go in the right direction and that within the University Management we can focus more on the core issues that we want to drive forward. The c

Understanding the behaviour of light and matter – key to future technologies

If we can understand how and why light and matter behave as they do, we are one step closer to solving some of the most fundamental problems in physics. Finding the answers to these questions drives Ville Maisi, Associate Professor of Solid States Physics at NanoLund. As long as he can remember he has been interested in electric circuits and physics. With the support of a new ERC Consolidator Gran

Temperature increase triggers viral infection

Researchers at Lund University, together with colleagues at the NIST Synchrotron Facility in the USA, have mapped on an atomic level what happens in a virus particle when the temperature is raised. “When the temperature rises, the virus’s genetic material changes its form and density, becoming more fluid-like, which leads to its rapid injection into the cell,” says Alex Evilevitch who led the stud

A medical doctor in both war and peace

A sudden bang. The hand grenade has caused me severe shrapnel injuries: a punctured lung, my liver is bleeding and the wound on my leg is causing rapid blood loss. The medics decide that this requires an intervention from the trauma squad. I am loaded onto a stretcher and driven to the surgery tent. It is Monday morning, and the Aurora 23 military exercise is in full swing in southern Sweden. I am

Old-growth forests store a lot more carbon than managed forests

Swedish old-growth forests store 83 percent more carbon than managed forests, according to a new study from Lund University. The difference is substantially larger than previous estimates and is mainly due to large carbon stocks in the soil. The study, published in the scientific journal Science, is the most comprehensive mapping of how much carbon is stored in Swedish old-growth forests to date.
