The influence of convection drying on the physicochemical properties of yacón (Smallanthus sonchifolius)

Yacón root is a natural source of fructans, which has many potential benefits. Convective drying has been applied to increase the shelf life of yacón roots. However, this processing may lead to detrimental effects on the physicochemical functionality. The drying was investigated using different conditions (drying temperatures of 45 °C, 50 °C and 55 °C at a drying air velocity of 2 m/s and 60 °C at

Quality of life of prosthetic and orthotic users in South India : A cross-sectional study

Background: The aim of this study was to compare QOL among people in India using lower-limb prostheses or orthoses with people without disability. A further aim was to compare subgroups and investigate whether QOL was associated with physical disability, gender, income, living area, and education. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study in which the World Health Organization Quality of Life

Comparison between normal saline and Ringer’s acetate in bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate

Objective: The standard surgical treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). The aim of this study was to compare normal saline (NS) (0.9% sodium chloride) and Ringer’s acetate (RA) as irrigation fluid with regard to visibility, resection feasibility, coagulation and bleeding in bipolar TURP. Materials and methods: Twenty patients (mean age 7

Osteoporosis knowledge and awareness among university students in Saudi Arabia

Awareness and knowledge about any disease is the first step to prevent and treat it, so this study evaluates osteoporosis awareness and knowledge in university students. Our results showed a high awareness and good knowledge of osteoporosis. Females were better informed than males. Knowledge increased with increasing education level. PURPOSE: Osteoporosis is a worldwide health problem, including S

Charge and Spin Transport in Parallel-Coupled Quantum Dots in Nanowires

This thesis explores crystal-phase engineering of nanowires to fabricate advanced quantum structures for charge and spin transport studies. Quantum dots formed by crystal-phase tuning during epitaxial growth of InAs nanowires were used as a starting point to realize and electrically characterize two different types of parallel-coupled quantum dots; electron-hole quantum dots and electron-electron

Photoreceptors and eyes of pikeperch Sander lucioperca, pike Esox lucius, perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus from a clear and a brown lake

The photoreceptors and eyes of four fish species commonly cohabiting Fennoscandian lakes with different light transmission properties were compared: pikeperch Sander lucioperca, pike Esox lucius, perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus. Each species was represented by individuals from a clear (greenish) and a humic (dark brown) lake in southern Finland: Lake Vesijärvi (LV; peak transmiss

Thalassemia and sickle cell anemia in Swedish immigrants : Genetic diseases have become global

AIMS: Some 15% of the Swedish population is born outside Sweden, originating from all continents of the world. Thalassemia and sickle cell anemia constitute the most common inherited recessive disorders globally and they are endemic in areas of Africa and Asia, origins of many immigrants to Sweden. We aimed at investigating the origins of the Swedish sickle cell and thalassemia patients.METHODS: P

Resistance Through Acting : Ambivalent Practices of the No Border Musical

I ett Europa där gränskontroller intensifieras och deportationer ökar ställer denna avhandling frågor om möjligheter till motstånd och aktivism genom teater. Den tar sin utgångspunkt i en deltagande etnografisk undersökning av No Border Musical. No Border Musical skapades och sattes upp i Malmö under 2011–2013. Initiativet togs av personer kopplade till den lokala flyktingrättsrörelsen. Ungefär häIn a context of deportability and bordering practices, this thesis asks questions regarding possibilities and limitations of resistance through community theatre. It sets out from a participatory ethnographic exploration of the working process and performance of the No Border Musical. The No Border Musical was created in 2011–2013 in the city of Malmö in southern Sweden. It was initiated by people

Tamoxifen treated patients have a better survival than patients treated with aromatase inhibitors - A population based registry study in Sweden

Background. Randomised trials suggest that therapy with aromatase inhibitors improves survival in breast cancer compared with tamoxifen therapy in postmenopausal cases with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Whether these results from randomized studies transform into the general population is unknown. We have therefore compared survival for all breast cancer cases in Sweden diagnosed 2000-2

The effect of perimetric experience in normal subjects

Two groups of normal subjects were submitted to repeated automated static threshold perimetry. Perimetric results were strongly affected by the level of experience in some subjects; in the majority, however, the effect of experience was small. Initial field tests often showed high numbers of depressed points. Sensitivity increased with perimetric training, particularly between the first sessions.

A clinical comparison of three computerized automatic perimeters in the detection of glaucoma defects

The ability to detect glaucomatous field defects of three automatic computerized perimeters (COMPETER, OCTOPUS, and PERIMETRON) was compared in a clinical study of 74 patients. This study included patients with glaucoma, those with suspected glaucoma in whom the visual fields were completely normal, and normal subjects. The reference fields were obtained by careful static and kinetic manual perime

Mapping Systematic Reviews on Forensic Psychiatric Care : A Systematic Review Identifying Knowledge Gaps

Background: Forensic psychiatric care treats mentally disordered offenders who suffer mainly from psychotic disorders, although comorbidities such as personality disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, and substance abuse are common. A large proportion of these patients have committed violent crimes. Their care is involuntary, and their caregivers' mission is complex: not only to rehabilitate the

Role of radiotherapy fractionation in head and neck cancers (MARCH) : an updated meta-analysis

Background The Meta-Analysis of Radiotherapy in squamous cell Carcinomas of Head and neck (MARCH) showed that altered fractionation radiotherapy is associated with improved overall and progression-free survival compared with conventional radiotherapy, with hyperfractionated radiotherapy showing the greatest benefit. This update aims to confirm and explain the superiority of hyperfractionated radio

Germline variants of the genes involved in NF-kB activation are associated with the risk of COPD and lung cancer development

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer (LC) are closely related diseases associated with smoking history and dysregulated immune response. However, not all smokers develop the disease, indicating that genetic susceptibility could be important. Therefore, the aim of this study was to search for the potential overlapping genetic biomarkers, with a focus on single nucleotide pol

Changes experienced in primary education by teachers, autistic students and students' parents after a professional development intervention

We aimed to explore the experiences of teachers, autistic students and students' parents, before and after professional development intervention for teachers in primary school. The main participants were five autistic students aged 7–11 years in three primary schools (intervention schools), their parents and teachers. Five school contexts were studied, with three interventions and two comparisons.

Predicting Soil Saturated Water Conductivity Using Pedo-Transfer Functions for Rocky Mountain Forests in Northern China

Soil physicochemical properties and macropore spatial structure affect saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). However, due to regional differences and long measurement time, Ks is tedious to quantify. Therefore, it is of great importance to find simplified but robust methods to predict Ks. One possibility is to use pedo-transfer functions (PTFs). Along this line, stratified sampling was carried ou
