Chalk Laboratory I : SMASH ensemble: Ramon Lazkano

I became acquainted with the music of Ramon Lazkano in 2001 through his guitar pieces. I was immediately fascinated with his ideas and his sound palette; somehow, I associated his music to a range of color between white and gray. His is a musical language where harmonics work as shadows and offer glimpses of a music that lives within a very personal and unique instrumental treatment.Later, togethe

Preferences for Gender Affirming Treatment and Associated Factors Among Transgender People in Sweden

Introduction: Gender affirming surgery of primary and/or secondary sex characteristics has been shown to alleviate gender dysphoria. A descriptive snapshot of current treatment preferences is useful to understand the needs of the transgender population seeking health care. This study aimed to describe preferences for gender affirming treatment, and their correlates, among individuals seeking healt

Design of robust 2,2′-bipyridine ligand linkers for the stable immobilization of molecular catalysts on silicon(111) surfaces

The attachment of the 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) moieties to the surface of planar silicon(111) (photo)electrodes was investigated usingab initiosimulations performed on a new cluster model for methyl-terminated silicon. Density functional theory (B3LYP) with implicit solvation techniques indicated that adventitious chlorine atoms, when present in the organic linker backbone, led to instability at very

Seasonal variation in Norway spruce response to inoculation with bark beetle-associated bluestain fungi one year after a severe drought

In 2018, up to 4 million m3 Norway spruce was killed by the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus in Sweden. The event was unique for Sweden, in terms of both affected volume and the fact that it was triggered by severe drought stress, not by ample availability of relatively defenseless storm-felled trees. The outbreak continued in 2019 and 2020, each year with twice as many trees killed as in 2018.

Hepatitis C elimination in Sweden : Progress, challenges and opportunities for growth in the time of COVID-19

Background & Aims: In 2014, the burden of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Sweden was evaluated, to establish a baseline and inform public health interventions. Considering the changing landscape of HCV treatment, prevention, and care, and in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this analysis seeks to evaluate Sweden's progress towards the World Health Organization (WHO) elimination targets and identify

End-of-life discussions in residential care homes improves symptom control : A national register study

Background: In Europe, residential care homes (RCHs) rather than hospitals are the most common care facilities for the older adult and the place where most deaths occur in this age group. There is a lack of knowledge regarding end-of-life (EOL) discussions and how they correlate with symptoms and symptom relief. Objective: The aim was to examine the correlation between EOL discussions and symptom

Are female mice dehydrated during peak lactation? Effect of water and gel supplement on hydration parameters and water consumption in two strains of mice

Mice (Mus musculus) have a high basal rate of metabolism which increases during pregnancy and lactation. During peak lactation, water intake amounts to up to 65 % of the bodyweight per day. Providing water in a bottle may pose a restriction of water intake and lead to dehydration during periods of high demand, such as peak lactation. To establish if female mice are able to sustain a physiological

Low-level exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is associated with reduced lung function among Swedish young adults

Background: Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been linked to adverse pulmonary effects. However, the impact of low-level environmental PAH exposure on lung function in early adulthood remains uncertain. Objectives: To evaluate the associations between urinary PAH metabolites and lung function parameters in young adults. Methods: Urinary metabolites of pyrene, phenanthrene, an

Influence of nuclides and chelators on imaging using affibody molecules : comparative evaluation of recombinant affibody molecules site-specifically labeled with ⁶⁸Ga and ¹¹¹In via maleimido derivatives of DOTA and NODAGA

Accurate detection of cancer-associated molecular abnormalities in tumors could make cancer treatment more personalized. Affibody molecules enable high contrast imaging of tumor-associated protein expression shortly after injection. The use of the generator-produced positron-emitting radionuclide (68)Ga should increase sensitivity of HER2 imaging. The chemical nature of radionuclides and chelators

Characterization of the BRCA1-like immunoreactivity of human seminal plasma

Objectives. The subcellular localization of the breast cancer susceptibility gene product BRCA1 has been controversial. Discrepant results have been reported during the past 3 years, partially because of the unavailability of highly specific reagents for BRCA1 protein. Our objective was to characterize the BRCA1-like immunoreactivity that is detected in human seminal plasma by using monoclonal and

Effects of the oral, direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran on five common coagulation assays

Dabigatran is an oral, reversible thrombin inhibitor that has shown promising results in large clinical trials. Laboratory monitoring is not needed but the effects on common coagulation assays are incompletely known. Dabigatran was added to plasma from healthy subjects in the concentration range 0-1,000 μg/l and analysed using several reagents for activated thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin

Detection of G Protein-Coupled Receptor Autoantibodies in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Using Standard Methodology

BACKGROUND: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder of orthostatic intolerance that primarily affects women of childbearing age. The underlying pathophysiology of POTS is not fully understood, but it has been suggested that autoimmunity may play a role. The aim of this study was to compare concentrations of autoantibodies to cardiovascular G protein-coupled receptors between

The genomic architecture of the passerine MHC region : High repeat content and contrasting evolutionary histories of single copy and tandemly duplicated MHC genes

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is of central importance to the immune system, and an optimal MHC diversity is believed to maximize pathogen elimination. Birds show substantial variation in MHC diversity, ranging from few genes in most bird orders to very many genes in passerines. Our understanding of the evolutionary trajectories of the MHC in passerines is hampered by lack of data on

The Child's Best Interests during Hospitalisation - What does it imply?

IntroductionThe child’s best interest has moral foundations in medicine and has existed for decades in the field of paediatrics. Indeed, there are recommendations for the child’s best interests to be a primary consideration in all matters that concern the child. However, there is uncertainty in the literature over how the child’s best interests may be safeguarded within healthcare. AimThe aim of t
