Histamine and histidine decarboxylase are hallmark features of ECL cells but not G cells in rat stomach

The oxyntic mucosa of the rat stomach is rich in ECL cells which produce and secrete histamine in response to gastrin. Histamine and the histamine-forming enzyme histidine decarboxylase (HDC) have been claimed to occur also in the gastrin-secreting G cells in the antrum. In the present study, we used a panel of five HDC antisera and one histamine antiserum to investigate whether histamine and HDC

A sulfophenylated polysulfone as the DMFC electrolyte membrane - an evaluation of methanol permeability and cell performance

A sulfophenylated polysulfone (PSU-sph), carrying 0.8 sulfonic acid units per repeating unit of the polymer, is evaluated as a membrane electrolyte for DMFC applications. The liquid uptake, methanol transport characteristics, electrolyte conductivity, and fuel cell performance are investigated. The methanol transport and DMFC performance results are compared to those of Nafion® 117. The PSU-sph me

Ramet demography in a ring-forming clonal sedge

1 In a calcareous dry grassland community in central Europe genets of the clonal sedge Carex humilis form very distinct rings of densely aggregated ramets. As genet growth form is generated by ramet population dynamics, ramet demography must be studied in order to understand how rings develop. We analysed how ramet demography in C. humilis depends on ramet position within the ring and how this is

Model Describing Material-Dependent Deformation Behavior in High-Velocity Metal Forming Processes

A constitutive model for rate-dependent and thermomechanically coupled plasticity at finite strains is presented. The plasticity model is based on a J(2) model and rate-dependent behavior is included by use of a Perzyna-type formulation. Adiabatic heating effects are handled in a consistent way and not, as is a common assumption, through a constant conversion of the internal work rate into rate of

Extraction of cadmium from phosphoric acid solutions with amines Part II. Diluent selection, flow-sheet configuration, pilot plant operation

A large number of diluents were screened to determine the optimum combination between diluent and extractant. Combinations of a C8 tertiary amine and aromatic diluents or of a C12 tertiary amine and aliphatic diluents do not lead to third-phase formation. A flow-sheet for a solvent-extraction process for treatment of various qualities of wet-process phosphoric acid solutions is proposed. Based on

Vision in the deep sea

The deep sea is the largest habitat on earth. Its three great faunal environments - the twilight mesopelagic zone, the dark bathypelagic zone and the vast flat expanses of the benthic habitat- are home to a rich fauna of vertebrates and invertebrates. In the mesopelagic zone (150-1000 in), the down-welling daylight creates an extended scene that becomes increasingly dimmer and bluer with depth. Th

Anastomotic healing in the rat colon: comparison between a radiological method, breaking strength and bursting pressure.

Background and aims: While mechanical parameters (breaking strength, bursting pressure) are used to measure colonic anastomotic healing, reported values are inconsistent. This study developed a novel approach to study colonic anastomotic repair and compared it with mechanical methods. Methods and materials: We created standardized four- and eight-suture colonic anastomoses and performed contrast e

Are geographical differences in cardiovascular mortality due to morbidity differences or to methodological differences? The project "myocardial infarction in Mid-Sweden"

Geographical variations in cardiovascular mortality have been reported from Mid-Sweden. IHD mortality for men aged 45-64 was 60% higher in the western part than in the east. Mortality from stroke for men aged 45-74 was 73% higher on the west. Similar differences were found for women. One possible explanation could be that there are no incidence differences but that the mortality differences are du

Inhibition effects of furfural on alcohol dehydrogenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase and pyruvate dehydrogenase.

The kinetics of furfural inhibition of the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH; EC 1.1.1.1), aldehyde dehydrogenase (AlDH; EC 1.2.1.5) and the pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) complex were studied in vitro. At a concentration of less than 2 mM furfural was found to decrease the activity of both PDH and AlDH by more than 90%, whereas the ADH activity decreased by less than 20% at the same concentration.

Macroeconometric Studies of Private Consumption, Government Debt and Real Exchange Rates

Enligt den permanenta inkomst hypotesen väljer individerna sin konsumtion med hänsyn till sin långsiktiga ellAdvances in time series analysis during the last two decades have stimulated research in a number of areas in macroeconomics. This thesis is a compilation of five essays using cointegrated vector autoregressive (VAR) models, unit root tests and regime switching models to investigate the behavior of private consumption, public debt and the real exchange rate. Chapter two explores the empirical evi

Validation of the Rheumatoid and Arthritis Outcome Score (RAOS) for the lower extremity

BACKGROUND: Patients with inflammatory joint diseases tend due to new treatments to be more physically active; something not taken into account by currently used outcome measures. The Rheumatoid and Arthritis Outcome Score (RAOS) is an adaptation of the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) and evaluates functional limitations of importance to physically active people with inflammato

Some challenges in connection with the construction of a Massive Open Online Course on ethical and societal aspects of AI

The Swedish government is at present investing heavily in making Sweden competitive in AI (Artificial Intelligence). As a part of that effort, Lund University has been commissioned with providing a series of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) on different topics regarding AI, including several topics dealing with Humans and AI. As a comprehensive university, Lund University has an advantage in be

Enabling entrepreneurial empowerment through a three-day entrepreneurship camp

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a 3-day entrepreneurship camp on nursing students’ empowerment to act entrepreneurially. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews with 17 nursing students conducted both before and after the camp. The data also included student drawings, as well as documents and interviews with 10 stakeholder representatives. Our findi

Socioeconomic and clinical predictors of mortality in patients with acute dyspnea

Background: Factors predicting long-term prognosis in patients with acute dyspnea may guide both acute management and follow-up. The aim of this study was to identify socioeconomic and clinical risk factors for all-cause mortality among acute dyspnea patients admitted to an Emergency Department. Methods: We included 798 patients with acute dyspnea admitted to the ED of Skåne University Hospital, M
