Enforcement of laws regulating domestic work - a case study of South Africa

KIn June 2011, the Domestic Workers Convention was adopted in the ILO. The Convention establishes minimum conditions of employment and labour rights for domestic workers. In contrast to other types of work, domestic work takes place in private households, in isolation and hidden from public insight. This makes domestic workers vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. The Domestic Workers Convention ob

An Hibernian Tale – Representations of Identity in the Irish Big House Novel

The presence of the paradox in several developed egalitarian countries indicates that the female share of STEM graduates must be influenced b

Genome-wide meta-analysis of 241,258 adults accounting for smoking behaviour identifies novel loci for obesity traits

Few genome-wide association studies (GWAS) account for environmental exposures, like smoking, potentially impacting the overall trait variance when investigating the genetic contribution to obesity-related traits. Here, we use GWAS data from 51,080 current smokers and 190,178 nonsmokers (87% European descent) to identify loci influencing BMI and central adiposity, measured as waist circumference a

Safe and Sorry? From the Risk Society to the Anxiety Society via the Precautionary Principle

The precautionary principle is a judicial version of the common sense notion of "better safe than sorry". It may well be the most innovative and noteworthy new concept in environmental policy over the last twenty years, but I would also say it may well be one of the most dangerous, irresponsible and arbitrary guiding rules. It was first adopted in environmental law but has now spread to
