Course
Course 15 credits • LIVR81
When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, it wasn’t just politics that changed – literature took new directions too. In this course, you’ll explore how German-speaking authors have portrayed identity, history, and social transformation in a reunified nation.
This course offers both broad and in-depth insights into German-language literature after 1989, with a focus on novels. You’ll read and analyse works that reflect how Germany’s history and culture have evolved since reunification.
You’ll learn how literature addresses questions of identity, memory, and reckoning with the past – and how it contributes to shaping a new cultural self-image in modern Germany. The course also provides tools to interpret and analyse texts from both literary-historical and narrative-theoretical perspectives.
