This thesis examines whether the current EU competition law framework, particularly Articles 101 and 102 TFEU, is sufficient to regulate algorithmic collusion. As pricing algorithms become more autonomous and capable of producing supra-competitive outcomes without direct human input, concerns arise about whether such behaviour fits within existing legal categories like “concerted practice” or “abu

This thesis investigates the quantum Mpemba effect, where an initially hotter system cools down faster than an initially colder one. This was demonstrated in a qubit system coupled to two environments. A thermal state is chosen as the initial state and then left to freely equilibrate. It was shown that the initial thermal state can be chosen in a way to accelerate the resulting relaxation process.

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have emerged as an efficient platform for mRNA delivery, in which ionisable lipids play a central role in intracellular uptake and endosomal escape. In this study, the influence of different ionisable lipids on cellular uptake, endosomal damages and mRNA release kinetics was investigated to identify promising LNP compositions for effective mRNA delivery. Dose-dependent L

This project addresses the challenge of designing for permanence within a heavily gentrified and tourist-driven environment. It responds directly to local housing needs while integrating small-scale tourism and establishing clear spatial boundaries to safeguard local biodiversity. While housing constitutes the central focus of the proposal, the project also argues that permanence cannot be secur

This thesis investigates the quantum dynamics of a three-level laser system described by the Scovil and Schulz--DuBois model with emphasis on the emergence of classical laser behaviour. In particular we study the time evolution from an initially coherent quantum field. We compare closed Jaynes--Cummings dynamics with open Lindblad dissipator dynamics including hot and cold Markovian reservoirs, wh

This study examines how part-time work is discursively constructed and contested in the German political debate following the CDU's proposal to limit the right to part-time work in January 2026. Situated in the context of demographic change and labour shortages, the proposal frames part-time employment primarily as an economic burden – a framing that raises questions about how economic product

Natural products are of great interest for a variety of powerful applications that are related to the biological activity of small organic molecules inspired by nature. While the landscape of natural products is structurally abundant, their occurrence in nature is very scarce, posing a challenge to isolate them in quantities required to be studied and used in pharmaceutical application. This work

In this episode, we speak to Carolyn Deere Birkbeck, Founder and Executive Director of the Forum on Trade, Environment the SDGs (TESS) and Alessandro Monti, Assistant Professor in Energy and Sustainability Law at the University of Copenhagen, about policies and initiatives to strengthen sustainability in international trade law.

International research collaboration is essential for tackling global challenges, many of which disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), while scientific capital remains concentrated in high-income countries (HICs). Drawing on CRediT contributorship data from 2018–2023 and past and present author affiliations, we examine how labor is divided in teams between researchers

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how former members of transnational organized crime organizations experience followership in relation to their leaders, challenging assumptions present in criminological research by integrating organizational constructionist perspectives. Methodology: Guided by abductive reasoning, we studied the narratives of former members of organized crime gro

By investigating feminised lifestyle trends such as the ‘Clean Girl’ and ‘Trad Wife’, this research seeks to unpack the distinct identity tensions young women experience when navigating the contradiction between the ideal of ‘consuming less’ and the continuous consumption required to perform these lifestyles online. The empirical material is analysed through an integrated theoretical framework com

The Arctic is warming rapidly leading to the development of new thermokarst landscape features. Among the most rapidly developing landforms are retrogressive thaw slumps. The largest known thaw slump is the Batagay megaslump located in the Sakha republic, Russia. This thesis aims to assess the thaw slumps growth’ and yearly retreat rates through systematic digitization of openly accessible satelli

African elephants are keystone species facing severe declines due to the ivory trade and habitat loss. To investigate the genomic consequences, we analyze 232 high-coverage genomes from 17 African countries in the first continent-wide genomic analysis treating savanna (Loxodonta africana) and forest (L. cyclotis) elephants as distinct species. We find a deep divergence between species, with forest

This study examines the defense modernization efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Vision 2030, together with the institutional architecture of GAMI and SAMI, sets an ambitious target of 50% defense localization by 2030. While official reports assert steady progress in upstream industrial capabilities, this study asks whether these efforts have been as successful as claimed. The research

Germany remains the only large country in the world without a general speed limit on highways. One of the main arguments for this policy is that lower speeds represent a travel time cost that is not outweighed by benefits, such as a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. As transport decision making in the European Union is based on cost-benefit analysis (CBA), this paper compares the value of tra

This open access book explores knowledge practices by five women from different European contexts. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth

Water resilience plays a critical role in ensuring uninterrupted function in modern hospitals. Disturbance to the supply of this precious material creates robust issues in care and patient safety. This chapter explores how AI with IoT-based solutions can be used to enhance water management further for sustainability and reliability of supply in smart hospitals to solve or even prevent water crises

The Machine and Assembly Hall in Varvsstaden (Malmö, Sweden) is a heritage industrial building currently being refurbished into office space. As part of the renovation, the historic cast-iron framed windows will be complemented by an inner insulating window installed approximately 500 mm inside the existing line, creating an air cavity and altering the mechanical loading conditions of the original

This study explores the potential of thermophoresis as a method of translating silicon nanowires in a liquid. Thermophoresis, the movement of particles against a temperature gradient, provides a scalable method of manipulating the particles. Simulations conducted in COMSOL examined both spherical and cylindrical approximations of nanowires, focusing on their translation under varying temperature g
