Amputation for vascular disease. Prognostic factors for healing, long-term outcome and costs.

General characteristics and outcome was evaluated in 177 consecutive patients who underwent a major amputation in a defined population. Smoking and diabetes lowered the mean amputation age. Healing failure at six months was seen in 24% of transtibial and in 11% of transfemoral amputees. Preoperative absence of gangrene and hemoglobin >120 g/L increased the risk of healing failure. Six months after

A Chemometric Approach to Process Monitoring and Control - With Applications to Wastewater Treatment Operation

In this work, various aspects of multivariate monitoring and control of wastewater treatment operation are discussed. A number of important difficulties face operators and process engineers when handling online measurements from wastewater treatment processes. These include, for instance, a high number of correlated measurement variables, non-stationarities, nonlinearities and multiscale process b

Inflammation and neutrophil recruitment in healing of colonic anastomosis

Wound healing is a multistep process with an initial inflammatory response, followed by synthesis of extracellular matrix components and finalized by a repair phase. One main goal was to determine the impact and adhesive mechanisms of neutrophil recruitment in anastomotic healing in the colon. Passive immunization against CD18 abolished anastomotic accumulation of neutrophils, whereas no effect on

Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer - Molecular Genetics and Biology of Associated Tumors

This thesis focuses on one of the most common types of hereditary cancer, hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). This syndrome is characterized by an autosomal dominant inheritance, an increased risk for several types of cancer (especially cancer of the colorectum, small bowel, endometrium, ovary and urinary tract), early age at diagnosis, and frequent development of multiple primary m

Regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase - Consequences in experimental models of bladder disease

Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is associated with various pathophysiological conditions in the lower urinary tract. The aims of this thesis have been to investigate the regulation of iNOS in bladder smooth muscle cells and the consequences on neuromuscular regulation, cell growth and differentiation. Primary cultures of rat bladder smooth muscle cells (BSMC) expressed iNOS mRNA

Intensification of the biogas process by improved process monitoring and biomass retention

The utilisation of energy in the form of biogas is one of the environmentally sound alternatives available using renewable energy sources. Biogas is formed by anaerobic degradation of organic material, the main consistuent being energy-rich methane. There is a large unused potential of organic waste that is suitable for biogas production and the anaerobic digestion process has the potential of bec

Vascular effects of prostacyclin in cat skeletal muscle and in the traumatised rat brain

Disturbances in microvascular function may be important for tissue damage in many disease states. Prostacyclin, a substance produced by endothelial cells, is important for the maintenance of normal vascular homeostasis and is a potential drug for treatment of microvascular dysfunction, but indications and optimal dosage remains to be established. In the present thesis we evaluated the capillary fi

The parents school? Narrative research about parental involvement

Over the last two decades, educational reforms have stimulated an enormous growth in innovative school thinking, effecting both independent schools and mainstream education. Parents and interest groups, previously excluded from general pedagogic practice and planning, are now faced with new opportunities and responsibilities. Parents “invest” in these newly won options in very different ways. Fail

Once weekly glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist albiglutide vs. prandial insulin added to basal insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus : Results over 52 weeks

We have previously reported that once-weekly albiglutide was noninferior to thrice-daily lispro for glycemic lowering, with decreased weight and risk of hypoglycemia, in patients inadequately controlled on basal insulin over 26 weeks. Findings after 52 weeks reveal similar responses to albiglutide as an add-on to insulin glargine.

Non-Invasive Monitoring of Architectural Heritage

The on-site documentation and examination of architectural heritage has presented challenges for traditional analysis methods in the form of, among other things, large complex structures, sites and environmental conditions. In recent years there has been growing interest in assessing progressing deterioration processes and material analysis, with an emphasis on sustainable conservation and mainten

Liksom ett par nya ögon. Frithiof Holmgren och synsinnets problematik

This study deals with research on the visual organ as pursued in experimental physiology during the latter half of the nineteenth-century. In the 1850's och 60's experimental physiology developed as a new, scientific discipline within the curriculum of western medicine. By opposing the natural philosophical and vitalistic viewpoint of romantic medicine and by proclaiming measuring devices, animal

Water and protein solutions studied by field-dependent magnetic relaxation

In the work presented, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation is used to study wide range of systems. The thesis concerns solvent interactions studied with relaxation techniques that involve measurements at many fields, which allows the separation of individual relaxation mechanisms. The approach also makes it possible to characterize the involved dynamic properties in much greater detail. T

Cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apnea in humans

This thesis deals with cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apneas in humans. During apnea (breath-holding), a number of interacting cardiovascular reflexes are initiated, and together these reflexes are called the “diving response”. The main cardiovascular characteristics of the human diving response are reduced heart rate, decreased cardiac output, peripheral vasoconstriction, and increased

Modelling of molybdopterin-dependent enzymes

The thesis deals with models for molybdopterin-dependent enzymes. Several model systems containing molybdenum or tungsten have been prepared and characterised, and their reactivity with oxygen atom acceptors and donors have been investigated. Oxygen atom transfer reactions involving oxomolybdenum bis-dithiolene complexes have been modelled using density functional calculations. The first molybden

Regulation of digestive organ. An experimental study on the role of CCK, Bile and EGF

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is known to exert secretory and trophic effects on the pancreas. Its release from the intestinal mucosa is regulated by pancresic proteases in the small intestine. However, knowledge about the type of responding exocrine cells and the time course of events during stimulation with CCK is lacking. Further, the role of CCK in the regulation of growth in other digestive organs is
