Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphism in sarcoidosis in relation to associated autoimmune diseases

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the significance of ACE gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in the frequency of autoimmune manifestations in sarcoidosis. DESIGN: In patients with sarcoidosis the ACE gene I/D polymorphism was detected with PCR on genomic DNA. The patients with sarcoidosis were divided according to the presence (n = 30) or absence (n = 32) of autoimmune manifestations. The former

EU Law, Fundamental Rights and National Democracy

The orthodox view is that rights complement democracy. This book critically examines this view in the context of EU fundamental rights, specifically in situations where EU law requires member states to respect EU fundamental rights. It first sets out a legal theoretical account of how human rights can complement democracy. It argues that they can do only if they are understood as both the conditio

The Democratic Horizons of the Museum: Citizenship and Culture

Change is sweeping through the world of museums, technologically, financially, and ideologically, impacting on the sociocultural evolution of their roles and status. We seek to contribute to ongoing reflections by offering a conceptual framework that links museums with democratic theory, to citizenship and its practices – a domain that is also in notable transition. We connect concretely with the

LEARNING FROM VILA VALENTE: REDEFINING THE ROLE OF THE ARCHITECT

In response to Loures Municipal Council’s recent proposal for redeveloping the Vila Valente Quarter of Moscavide, an area in urgent need of intervention, by demolishing, starting from scratch and relocating its vulnerable residents, this thesis challenges our responsibilities as architects when it comes to community development, especially with respect to the marginalised in society. We understand

The Silurian Mulde Event and a scenario for secundo-secundo events

Graphic correlation using graptolites and conodonts provides a high-resolution timescale for correlating from coastal to deep oceanic sections and, thereby, also a detailed record of the sequence of changes during the Mulde Secundo-Secundo Event. That interval includes sedimentary facies otherwise unknown in older Wenlock to early Ludlow strata on Gotland. The identified sequence of changes includ

Regulation of Pancreatic Beta Cell Stimulus-Secretion Coupling by microRNAs.

Increased blood glucose after a meal is countered by the subsequent increased release of the hypoglycemic hormone insulin from the pancreatic beta cells. The cascade of molecular events encompassing the initial sensing and transport of glucose into the beta cell, culminating with the exocytosis of the insulin large dense core granules (LDCVs) is termed "stimulus-secretion coupling." Impairment in

Rangeland development of the Mu Us sandy land in semiarid China: An analysis using landsat and NOAA remote sensing data

Degradation of the dry semiarid ecosystems in the Mu Us Sandy Land of north central China was explored using high-resolution satellite images from 1978, 1987 and 1996. This study monitored both changes in grassland biomass production and reclamation activities to detect the nature and scale of land degradation since major economic reforms were introduced in 1978. The position of the high-resolutio

A design study of VOR: A versatile optimal resolution chopper spectrometer for the ESS

VOR, the versatile optimal resolution chopper spectrometer, is designed to probe dynamic phenomena that are currently inaccessible for inelastic neutron scattering due to flux limitations. VOR is a short instrument by the standards of the European Spallation Source (ESS), 30.2m moderator to sample, and provides instantaneous access to a broad dynamic range, 1-120 meV within each ESS period. The sh

Investigating stellar-mass black hole kicks

We investigate whether stellar-mass black holes have to receive natal kicks in order to explain the observed distribution of low-mass X-ray binaries containing black holes within our Galaxy. Such binaries are the product of binary evolution, where the massive primary has exploded forming a stellar-mass black hole, probably after a common envelope phase where the system contracted down to separatio

Leaking roofs in Tunisia

Summary The leaking of water through roofs is a major problem in many parts of Tunisia. As a part of a collaboration between "École N: ionale d'Ingénieurs de Tunis" (E.N.I.T.) and Lund University, Institute of Science and Technology (L.N.T.H.), Sweden, a measuring method has been developed to compare the watertightness of different roofing membranes. With the method, three roof structues with diff

Nutrient and Silicon Isotope Dynamics in the Laptev Sea and Implications for Nutrient Availability in the Transpolar Drift

Realistic prediction of the near-future response of Arctic Ocean primary productivity to ongoing warming and sea ice loss requires a mechanistic understanding of the processes controlling nutrient bioavailability. To evaluate continental nutrient inputs, biological utilization, and the influence of mixing and winter processes in the Laptev Sea, the major source region of the Transpolar Drift (TPD)

A user material approach for the solution of multi-field problems in Abaqus : Theoretical foundations, gradient-enhanced damage mechanics and thermo-mechanical coupling

The solution of multi-field problems and the numerical implementation by means of the finite element method constitute a sophisticated part of the characterisation of industrial processes. A comprehensive implementation framework for such a system of coupled field equations into a non-linear large strain finite element formulation is provided. The procedure is derived for a micromorphic approach i

Efficient first-order performance estimation for high-order adaptive optics systems

It is shown how first-order performance estimation of high-orderadaptive optics (AO) systems may be efficiently implemented in a hybridnumerical simulation by the use of 1) sparse matrix techniques forwavefront reconstruction, 2) undersampled pupil-plane turbulence-inducedaberrations, and 3) analytical models that compensate - in the limit ofinfinite exposure time - for the errors introduced by un

Analysis of genes coding for CD46, CD55 and C4b-binding protein in patients with idiopathic, recurrent, spontaneous pregnancy loss.

Since a tightly regulated complement system is needed for a successful pregnancy, we hypothesized that alterations in complement inhibitors may be associated with idiopathic, recurrent miscarriage. We sequenced all exons coding for three complement inhibitors: C4b-binding protein (C4BP), CD46 and CD55 in 384 childless women with at least two miscarriages that could not be explained by known risk f

Identification of plasticity constants from orthogonal cutting and inverse analysis

The aim of this work is that from experimental determined cutting process parameters be able to predict the plasticity input constants to Finite Element Method (FEM) models. In the present study the Johnson-Cook constitutive model constants are determined on the basis of cutting process parameters in orthogonal cutting and by use of inverse analysis. Previously established links between Johnson-Co

Frequency- and Phase-Sensitive Magnetomotive Ultrasound Imaging of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

It has recently been demonstrated that superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles can be used as magnetomotive ultrasound contrast agents. A time-varying external magnetic field acts to move the particles and, thus, the nanoparticle-laden tissue. However, the difficulty of distinguishing this magnetomotive motion from undesired movement induced in regions without nanoparticles or other motion arti

High-order splitting schemes for semilinear evolution equations

We first derive necessary and sufficient stiff order conditions, up to order four, for exponential splitting schemes applied to semilinear evolution equations. The main idea is to identify the local splitting error as a sum of quadrature errors. The order conditions of the quadrature rules then yield the stiff order conditions in an explicit fashion, similarly to that of Runge–Kutta schemes. Furth
