This research evaluates the impacts of flexible demand-side management on electricity load and indoor thermal comfort under extreme weather conditions, focusing on elderly people. For this purpose, an elderly care center in Alesund, Norway is chosen as the pilot building. A high spatiotemporal resolution building energy model is developed including thermal zones and energy systems, verified agains

Background: The clinical importance of immediate coronary angiography, with potentially subsequent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients without ST-elevation on the ECG is unclear. In this study, we assessed feasibility and safety aspects of performing immediate coronary angiography in a pre-specified pilot phase of the ‘DIrect or Subacute Coro

Abstract: (+)‐T‐Cadinol is a sesquiterpene with smooth muscle relaxing properties. In the isolated rat aorta, T‐cadinol relaxed contractions induced by 60 mM K+ in a concentration‐dependent fashion. The dihydropyridine calcium antagonist nimodipine was approximately 4,000 times more potent than T‐cadinol. While both drugs nearly abolished the K+‐induced contractions, they only partially relaxed c

Models of stellar clusters link the theoretical gravitational N-body problem to the study of real astrophysical systems. Such models require a description of the stars contained within the cluster. Stars are interesting objects in their own right, and the study of stellar evolution is important across astronomy, from the formation of exotic objects such as X-ray binaries and gamma-ray bursts to me

OBJECTIVES: Deep bone and joint infections (DBJI) are directly intertwined with health, demographic change towards an elderly population, and wellbeing. The elderly human population is more prone to acquire infections, and the consequences such as pain, reduced quality of life, morbidity, absence from work and premature retirement due to disability place significant burdens on already strained heal

AbstractPURPOSE: To determine whether the presence of one or more cilioretinal arteries, a distinct element of the pattern of fundus vessels, is genetically programmed, influenced by environmental factors, or the result of random mechanisms of vascular development. METHODS: The fundi of 112 pairs of healthy monozygotic and dizygotic twins were examined using digital fundus photography and visual a

We have studied the possibility of shifting a thermodynamically unfavourable enzymatic equilibrium towards product formation via the addition of a highly specific adsorbent. The commercially interesting enzymatic condensation of Z-L-aspartic acid with L-phenylalanine methyl ester to the sweetener aspartame was chosen as the model system. Extremely stable and specific adsorbents for the product Z-L

The research presented here evaluated road safety on the road sections included in the Intelligent Traffic Control System of the Podhale Region (ISSRRP) in Poland. This travel time information system consists of a remote traffic microwave sensor, cameras, as well as automatic plate number recognition on national roads with variable message signs and a mobile app to suggest alternative routes in th

The influence of wind is only occasionally accounted for in fire safety engineering, still the effect of wind on, for example, the performance of a smoke management system can be large. A simple analytical method to account for the effect of wind on mass flow through horizontal openings for natural ventilation is compared to results from CFD simulations in this paper. It is seen that the correspon

A prospective randomised study was made of 20 patients who underwent acromioplasty for the chronic impingement syndrome. Ten were operated on by Neer's technique and 10 with a modification where the deltoid origin was spared. Rehabilitation was more rapid with a better range of movement in the latter group. Acromioplasty with this modification offers benefits compared with the standard procedure.

The aim of this pilot study was to investigate clinical symptoms during a 10-day benzodiazepine (BZD) taper procedure. Twenty-one BZD-dependent patients attended a fixed 10-day inpatient tapering program. The patients developed mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. Concomitant codeine dependence and initially high BZD serum levels were associated with a worse prognosis.

Background: The influence of gender on bipolar disorder is controversial and it is unclear if inpatient care differs between men and women. Here, we investigate for gender differences in the inpatient length of stay for Swedes admitted for bipolar disorder and explore other factors that could explain any observed association. Methods: Admission data were extracted from the Swedish National Patient

Good alternatives to the Impact Factor (IF) algorithm are needed. The Thomson IF represents a limited measure of the importance of an individual article because 80% of a journal's IF is determined by only the 20% of the papers published. In the past few years, several new indexes has been created to provide alternatives to the IF algorithm. These include the removal of self citations from the calc

Background: The Swedish National Patient Registry (NPR) is a nationwide registry that is used extensively for epidemiological research. Using the NPR, we recently found a recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) incidence of 650/100,000 (0.65%) pregnant women in Sweden. It is of great importance that the quality of the coding is good and reliable in order to use NPR data for research. To specifically study

This article examines political parties’ approach to trade unions and the role of private and public party finance in contemporary democracies. We suggest that both unions’ direct donations and states’ party finance regimes may account for variation in the strength of parties’ organizational links to unions. We investigate this argument with a new data set covering parties historically aligned wit

We reconstructed a record of the micrometeorite flux in the Late Cretaceous using the distribution of extraterrestrial spinel grains across an ~2 m.y. interval of elevated 3He in the Turonian Stage (ca. 92–90 Ma). From ~30 m of the limestone succession in the Bottaccione section, Italy, a total of 979 kg of rock from levels below and within the 3He excursion yielded 603 spinel grains (32–355 µm si

Multigene expression signatures provide a molecular subdivision of early breast cancer associated with patient outcome. A gap remains in the validation of such signatures in clinical treatment groups of patients within population-based cohorts of unselected primary breast cancer representing contemporary disease stages and current treatments. A cohort of 3520 resectable breast cancers with RNA seq
