Digital gameplay is now firmly embedded in everyday practices in many Scandinavian homes. This paper deals with the constitution of such practices in families by taking a closer look at the material objects essential to play and their role in the “design of everyday life” (Shove et al 2007). It uses ethnographic method and anthropological practice theory to attend to the domestic spaces of leisure
Muscle contraction studies often focus solely on myofibres and the proteins known to be involved in the processes of sarcomere shortening and cross-bridge cycling, but skeletal muscle also comprises a very elaborate ancillary network of capillaries, which not only play a vital role in terms of nutrient delivery and waste product removal, but are also tethered to surrounding fibres by collagen "wir
Geographic isolation of small populations in refugia during late Pleistocene glaciations resulted in population differentiation that in some cases lead to speciation. We report the karyotype of Microtus bavaricus, an evolutionary young and threatened rodent endemic to the Alps. Our results show that the karyotype of M. bavaricus is almost identical to that of M. liechtensteini (2N = 46, NF = 54).

Purpose: Good to excellent clinical results have been shown in the initial studies on osseointegrated metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint implants that consist of a flexible silicone spacer connected to osseointegrated titanium fixtures. A high fracture rate of the silicone spacer, however, has been reported, diminishing the value of this implant system. The purpose
The role of the transition metal 3d states in the adsorption of h-BN on Cu(111) and Ni(111) has been studied by NEXAFS and PE spectroscopies and by work function measurements. Based on the analysis of drastic differences in the spectra from h-BN/Cu(111) and h-BN/Ni(111), it has been concluded that the strength of chemical bonding at the interfaces under study is determined mainly by the strength o
Taphofloras of the Koryak Upland and the Sagwon Locality of North Alaska are described in terms of their taxonomic composition, stratigraphic ranges, and comparison with coeval floras of Northeastern Russia and Alaska. Causes and amplitude of changes in Arctic floras across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary are considered. In its aspect and taxonomic composition, the Late Maastrichtian flora of th
Objectives To study early-onset group B streptococcal (EOGBS) morbidity, mortality, and maternal risk factors. Design Observational, population-based, retrospective. Data from national registers and medical records. Setting Sweden, 1997-2001. Population Cohort of 640 infants with a diagnosis of GBS infection out of 435 070 live births. Method Infants with diagnoses GBS sepsis (P36.0) and/or pneumo
Feminists, like many others, want to make a difference. They are interested in social change. They are especially interested in the ways this concerns the position of women in our societies. In order to accomplish this, the different actors within the women’s movements of Europe must be present in the political arenas where decisions are made. This concerns white indigenous women, as well as Black
Multiconfigurational quantum chemical methods (CASSCF/CASPT2) have been used to study the chemical bond in the actinide diatoms Ac-2, Th-2, Pa-2, and U-2. Scalar relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling have been included in the calculations. In the Ac-2 and Th-2 diatoms the atomic 6d, 7s, and 7p orbitals are the significant contributors to the bond, while for the two heavier diatoms, the 5f o
BACKGROUND: The host response to urinary tract infection includes the production of different inflammatory mediators. We investigated the cellular localization and time course of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX-2) expression in the mouse bladder and kidney after bacterial infection. METHODS: Experimental urinary tract infection in mice was established by intravesical
The aim of the study was to establish the influence of dexamethasone and/or alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) on the growth, mineralization, geometric and mechanical properties of ribs as a methodological model. The experiment was conducted during the final 24 days of prenatal life and first 14 days of neonatal life. The volumetric bone density of the trabecular and cortical bone was determined separately
Experiments were done in order to study the thermophilic archaebacterium Acidianus brierleyi during oxidation of pyrite (FeS2). The microorganisms were grown both separated from the pyrite by a membrane and in close contact with the pyrite. From the results it can be concluded that direct contact is needed for good growth of the strain studied. The obtained results indicated that the direct contac
Antiamoebins I, III and XVI as well as several others in minor amounts were produced by four strains of the coprophilous fungus Stilbella erythrocephala (syn. S. fimetaria) in its natural substrate and in liquid culture. The total antiamoebin concentration in dung was 126-624 mu g g(-1) fresh weight, with minimum inhibitory concentrations against most other coprophilous fungi being at or below 100
This study was designed to investigate the effect of inflammation and glucocorticosteroids (GCS) on the content of endothelin-1-like immunoreactivity (ET-LI) in the rat lung. Following intratracheal instillation of Sephadex beads, which induces a long-lasting inflammation in the lung, there was an increase in the lung content of ET-LI measured by RIA. This increase was abolished by locally adminis
We have performed a systematic study of the entropy term in the MM/GBSA (molecular Mechanics combined with generalized Born and surface area solvation) approach to calculate ligand-binding affinities The entropies are calculated by a normal mode analysis of harmonic frequencies from minimized snapshots of molecular dynamics simulations. For computational reasons, these calculations have normally b
