Doing archaeology in popular culture

The popular image of archaeology and what archaeologists do is based on various clichés which emphasise, among other things, adventurous fieldwork, the discovery of treasures and historical detective work. Although archaeologists may see themselves differently, their image in popular culture reveals a lot about how the subject is perceived and why it is so widely appreciated at present. I suggest

The Integrity of the Clean Development Mechanism - an interdisciplinary study on delegation

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol, which allows industrialised countries that have binding emission targets to invest in emission reduction projects in non-industrialised countries. These CDM investments generate certified emission reductions (CERs), which can be used by the industrialised countries towards meeting their own targets. The dual objective o

Development studies of an LED elevated runway guard light

This Master thesis treats development studies of an elevated light fixture from Pre study to prototype. The project is carried out in cooperation with Safegate Interna-tional AB and the Machine Design Department at the University of Lund. Throughout the project a combination of the methodologies, Ullrich and Eppinger’s “Product Design and Development” and Pahl and Beitz’s “Engineering design, a sy

Avvikande globalisering - En teoriprövande studie av samarbetet mellan terroristorganisationer och organiserad brottslighet i den globaliserade tidsåldern

Crime Terror Nexus studies headed by economists, criminologists, sociologists and anthropologists have studied the growing tendency towards cooperation between networks driven by organized crime and terrorist organizations. This thesis attempts to identify the reasons for this growing cooperation by applying Saskia Sassen’s globalization theory from her book Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medi

Postcolonialism and Development - A critical analysis of “The European Consensus on Development”

The discursive analysis of development began in the 1980’s. We will continue in its tradition, specifically with a focus on the often concealed ties shared by development theory and colonial theory. The aim of this investigation is to reveal the similarities between modern development policy and colonialism with the intention of positively affecting the development discourse. Our object of study i

Effects of pH, ionic strength, calcium, and molecular mass on the arrangement of hydrophobic peptide helices at the air-water interface

The influence of subphase characteristics (ionic strength, pH, and the presence of bridging cations) on the conformation and lateral orientation of the hydrophobic polypeptide poly-(L)-leucine (p-leu) has been investigated at the air-water interface with the surface film balance technique as well as with Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). In addition, Langmuir-Blodgett films of p-leu deposited on qu

On the ripening of vesicle dispersions

We analyze the ripening process where, in a dispersion of vesicles, amphiphile monomers diffuse between vesicles of different sizes, leading to a change in the size distribution. Since, typically, vesicles are not under tension, the driving force for the process comes from the curvature energy. With the conventional expansion of the curvature energy density, g,, to harmonic order we find that the

Structure-function effects in primary immunodeficiencies

Several immunodeficiency-related genes have been identified and a large number of mutations in these genes. Currently, a genetic defect has been determined in more than 2000 patients. Only recently has it become possible to address structure-function effects of these mutations in the corresponding proteins. The consequences of mutations in structure are discussed for Btk in X-linked agammaglobulin

Interarticulator programming: effects of closure duration on lip and tongue coordination in Japanese.

This paper examines the coordination of lip and tongue movements in sequences of vowel-bilabial consonant-vowel where the duration of the oral closure for the consonant is varied for linguistic purposes. Native speakers of Japanese served as subjects. The linguistic material consisted of Japanese word pairs that only differed in the duration of the labial consonant, which was either long or short.

Accelerated Monte Carlo models to simulate fluorescence spectra from layered tissues

Two efficient Monte Carlo models are described, facilitating predictions of complete time-resolved fluorescence spectra from a light-scattering and light-absorbing medium. These are compared with a third, conventional fluorescence Monte Carlo model in terms of accuracy, signal-to-noise statistics, and simulation time. The improved computation efficiency is achieved by means of a convolution techni

Immunogenicity properties of authentic and heterologously synthesized structural protein VP2 of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus.

The sole coat protein VP2 of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) was isolated and purified from intact virions, propagated in CHSE-214 cells. Likewise was the full-length VP2 protein isolated and purified upon cloning and expression of the corresponding complete gene in E. coli. The two purified proteins of different synthetic origins carrying identical primary structures were utilized in
