The structure-tensor analysis for optimal microseismic data partial stack

Microseismic monitoring of hydrofrac is an actively developing technology utilizing various acquizition arrays. In this paper we consider processing of microseismic data recorded by specific surface network geometry-patch arrays (far separated local receiver groups). The project aim is to produce an optimal partial stacking of the data within patches for improving a signal to noise ratio for micro

Fast Diffusion of a Mutant in Controlled Evolutionary Dynamics*

We present a novel approach to model the diffusion of a mutant in a geographical network. This is a key issue in the control of epidemics, since many diseases are transmitted by intermediate hosts that could be substituted with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) with a mutation that prevents them from spreading the pathogen. The main strength of our model lies in making analytically tractable t

Combining hyperspectral UAV and multispectral Formosat-2 imagery for precision agriculture applications

Remote sensing is a key tool for precision agriculture applications as it is capable of capturing spatial and temporal variations in crop status. However, satellites often have an inadequate spatial resolution for precision agriculture applications. High-resolution Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) imagery can be obtained at flexible dates, but operational costs may limit the collection frequency. Th

The understanding of aggression motivation and psychotherapy process

Despite widely acknowledged problems of aggression, presumptions on its constructive and destructive possibilities, aggression still remains scarcely explored phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to propose closer look at the subjective motivation of aggression in women. The study consisted of two stages and embraced 24 participants. As the analysis of semi-structured interviews and projective mat

Predicting post-operative functional ability from pre-operative measures in ACL-injured individuals

Purpose: This study aimed to quantify the relationship between objective and subjective measures of functional ability and determine if measures in the deficient (ACLd) state were correlated to, and capable of predicting a patient's objective and subjective measures in the reconstructed (ACLr) state. Methods: Twenty ACL-injured participants completed hop and side cut movements prior to and 10 mont

Cold-Season Methane Fluxes Simulated by GCP-CH4 Models

Cold-season methane (CH4) emissions may be poorly constrained in wetland models. We examined cold-season CH4 emissions simulated by 16 models participating in the Global Carbon Project model intercomparison and analyzed temporal and spatial patterns in simulation results using prescribed inundation data for 2000–2020. Estimated annual CH4 emissions from northern (>60°N) wetlands averaged 10.0 ± 5.

Improving the SM2RAIN-derived rainfall estimation using Bayesian optimization

The rainfall product derived from the SM2RAIN (Soil Moisture to Rain) algorithm has been widely used. However, there is still a large uncertainty partly due to the soil moisture input and parameters estimation of the SM2RAIN algorithm, which limits the application of the model in alpine regions. Here, the SM2RAIN-BayesOpt algorithm was developed by integrating the SM2RAIN algorithm and Bayesian op

Convenient Representations of Structured Systems for Model Order Reduction

In control theory there exist two convenient representations of a model, which are transfer functions and state-space matrices. However, structure in the transfer functions is not clearly seen in the state-space form, and on the other hand structure in the state-space form is not clearly seen in the transfer functions. The main reason for this is that Laplace transformation destroys most types of

Comparing the performance of different stomatal conductance models using modelled and measured plant carbon isotope ratios (δ(13) C): implications for assessing physiological forcing

Accurate modelling of long-term changes in plant stomatal functioning is vital to global climate change studies because changes in evapotranspiration influence temperature via physiological forcing of the climate. Various stomatal models are included in land surface schemes, but their robustness over longer timescales is difficult to validate. We compare the performance of three stomatal models, v

Triangulating a Plane

In this theoretical paper we consider the problem of accurately triangulating a scene plane. Rather than first triangulating a set of points and then fitting a plane to these points, we try to minimize the back-projection errors as functions of the plane parameters directly. As this is both geometrically and statistically meaningful our method performs better than the standard two step procedure.

Stochastic optimal power flow by multi-variate Edgeworth expansions

Stochastic optimal power flow can provide the system operator with adequate strategies for controlling the power flow to maintain secure operation under stochastic parameter variations. One limitation of stochastic optimal power flow has been that only steady-state variable limits have been used as security constraints. In many systems voltage stability and small-signal stability also play an impo

Generation of Spectral-Temporal Response Surfaces by Combining Multispectral Satellite and Hyperspectral UAV Imagery for Precision Agriculture Applications

Precision agriculture requires detailed crop status information at high spatial and temporal resolutions. Remote sensing can provide such information, but single sensor observations are often incapable of meeting all data requirements. Spectral-temporal response surfaces (STRSs) provide continuous reflectance spectra at high temporal intervals. This is the first study to combine multispectral sate

The emission factor of volatile isoprenoids: stress, acclimation, and developmental responses

The rate of constitutive isoprenoid emissions from plants is driven by plant emission capacity under specified environmental conditions (E-S, the emission factor) and by responsiveness of the emissions to instantaneous variations in environment. In models of isoprenoid emission, E-S has been often considered as intrinsic species-specific constant invariable in time and space. Here we analyze the v

Coordination of Independent Loops in Self-Adaptive Systems

Nowadays, the same piece of code should run on different architectures, providing performance guarantees in a variety of environments and situations. To this end, designers often integrate existing systems with ad-hoc adaptive strategies able to tune specific parameters that impact performance or energy—for example, frequency scaling. However, these strategies interfere with one another and unpred

Implementation of an Asymmetric Relay Autotuner in a Sequential Control Language

Control applications contain both logic, sequencing, and control algorithms. A holistic view of this is seldom presented in teaching and papers. One reason is the separation of communities -- automation groups typically come from the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) world while control engineers primarily come from the Distributed Control System (DCS) world. Both logic, sequencing, and control

Detection of Contact Force Transients in Robotic Assembly

A robotic assembly task is usually implemented as a sequence of simple motions, and the transitions between the motions are made when some events occur. These events can usually be detected with thresholds on some signal, but faster response is possible by detecting the transient on that signal. This paper considers the problem of detecting these transients. A force-controlled assembly task is use

Particle Filter for Combined Wheel-Slip and Vehicle-Motion Estimation

The vehicle-estimation problem is approached by fusing measurements from wheel encoders, an inertial measurement unit, and (optionally) a global positioning system in a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter. In total 14 states are estimated, including key variables in active safety systems, such as longitudinal velocity, roll angle, and wheel slip for all four wheels. The method only relies on kinemat

POET: A Portable Approach to Minimizing Energy Under Soft Real-time Constraints

Embedded real-time systems must meet timing constraints while minimizing energy consumption. To this end, many energy optimizations are introduced for specific platforms or specific applications. These solutions are not portable, however, and when the application or the platform change, these solutions must be redesigned. Portable techniques are hard to develop due to the varying tradeoffs experie
