This thesis treats allowance fraud. Very probably, allowance fraud is frequent and the authorities have difficulty in stopping it. For that reason, it is important to study the area of allowance fraud. The administrative system of sanctions is compared with the penal system of sanctions against different kinds of allowance fraud relating to social welfare, sickness benefit insurance, and housing a

DES is seldom used in the manufacturing system development process, instead it is usually used to cure problems in existent systems. This has the effect that the simulation study alone is considered being the cost driver for the analysis of the manufacturing system. It is argued that this is not a entirely correct view since the analysis has to be performed anyway, and the cost directly related to

The aim of this present thesis is to present the Utopian scheme in Elin Wägner’s novels of the nineteen-thirties: Dialogen fortsätter (1932) (“The Dialogue Continues”), Mannen vid min sida (1933) (“The Man by my Side”), Genomskådad (1937) (“Unmasked”) and Hemlighetsfull (1938) (“Mysterious”). With her authorship Wägner was aiming for a new social order, a radical change, polväxling (a shift of pol

This text offers some principal and methodogical issues on studies of timbre in words, music and vocal performance. Timbral relationships between word and music can be conceptualized as a continuum following an fictive axis running from meaning and timbre of words, through melody and music to performance. Sometimes the order might be different, but the ingredients will always be there. To get a gr

The protein folding and protein design problems are addressed, using coarse-grained models with only two types of amino acids, hydrophobic and hydrophilic. In addition to hydrophobicity forces, the models contain sequence-independent local interactions which are found to strongly influence the thermodynamics of these models. The models are studied using the dynamical-parameter Monte Carlo method.

A momentum imaging spectrometer optimized for photoionization experiments with synchrotron radiation was built in 2008. The spectrometer is equipped with an electrostatic lens, that focuses the charged dissociation products on to a position-sensitive multi-hit delay line anode. The possibility of focusing is essential for most applications, where fragment momentum is to be extracted. The apparatus

A study of fouling of ultrafiltration membranes due to adsorption of a fatty acid in the membrane matrix has been done. Octanoic acid was used as a model substance. It has been shown that a low-molecular-weight hydrophobic solute can have detrimental effects on the flux of hydrophobic ultrafiltration membranes even though the size of the solute is much smaller than the cut-off of the membrane and

The brain is not silent. Even in the absence of stimuli are the neurons activated every now and then in what is called "spontaneous" or "background activity" which provides a noisy background to the operation of the brain. This work shows how this noise can be utilized in the cognitive process. That is, rather than being treated as a nuisance, noise is given a functional role in the brain´s activi

The amygdala is a small subcortical structure that has long been implicated in the conditioning of fear and other emotions. It is heavily interconnected to a number of both cortical and subcortical structures and is thus well placed to integrate sensory inputs from multiple areas to produce emotional reactions directly as well as influence learning and attention systems. Data suggests that the amy

The thesis consists of two parts. In the first part pure potential theoretic methods are employed to study the obstacle problem connected with a uniformly elliptic second-order differential operator in divergence form. Regular points of the obstacles are characterized by the classical Wiener criterion. The second part deals with a class of functions satisfying a certain integral inequality. A pr

The empirical work rests on two separate theoretical foundations: theories that form the basis for analyzing the different target groups and theories dealing with persuasion. Theories of the first sort concern life-style, individual values, perceived risk, individual characteristics and self-image. Earlier research on young car drivers is also relevant in this context. Theories on attitudes and at

This book speaks to readers with a particular interest in the Baltic states as well as to those with a broader interest in post-communist democratization and citizenship. The notion of citizenship has not been prominent in academic perspectives on post-communism. This study aims at bringing citizenship back into these perspectives. Starting from the idea that citizenship is both a condition of de

This dissertation gives a description of the regulation of marriage, registered partnership and cohabitation - emphazising the joint dwelling - in the perspective of two basic normative patterns, on one side community and on the other financial independence/individual ownership, trying to explain the differences and similarities between the regulations. The content of the legal regulation is, furt

This thesis deals with different types of chiral fields. The properties of fermion masses are investigated from different poits of view, both within the Standard Model and in extensions of the model. It is shown how mass matrix invariants are used to define the measurables of the quark mixing matrix as invariant functions of the mass matrices. One model is presented where the family pattern is s

This thesis revolves around the problem of solving the structure and motion problem in computer vision. This is the problem of reconstructing the world, the structure, from images taken by a number of cameras undergoing an unknown motion. Much of the thesis is centred on the problem of finding initial estimates of the structure and the motion using a small set of image data. These initial estimate

This dissertation deals with the question of why and how the issue of workers' education came to be part of both bourgeois and working class formation during the second half of the 19th century and how it contributed to the shaping of new social relations. The theoretical perspective is based on the concept of hegemony indicating that a leading class has to establish and maintain its leadership by

This thesis consists of five papers (A-E). In Paper A, we study transient properties of the queue length process in various queueing settings. We focus on computing the mean and the Laplace transform of the time required for the queue length starting at $x
