I denna uppsats undersöks den svenska djurskyddslagstiftningen och huruvida den medför ett tillräckligt starkt juridiskt skydd för djuren samt om och i vilken omfattning djurens skyddsvärde får stå tillbaka för andra intressen. De centrala författningarna är djurskyddslagen och djurplågeribestämmelsen i 16 kap 13§ BrB. I uppsatsen behandlas även material från ett flertal djurrättsorganisationer.
