Infrastructure

Division of Building Materials The Building Materials Laboratory has a long history in working with moisture and durability related research. The lab is also used in education of civil engineers, fire safety engineers and architects. We have large laboratory facilities and a wide range of equipment including e.g. climate chambers, sorption balances, a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) as wel

Systematic sustainability work

Lund University strives to be a sustainable organisation and a driving force for sustainable development. As support in this work, there is an environmental management system that provides a systematic way to prioritise, implement and continuously improve our sustainability work. According to the Ordinance on Environmental Management at Public Authorities (SFS 2009:907) we are obligated to have an

Elliptic Flow of Charged Particles in Pb-Pb Collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV

We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) p = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2 < p(t) < 5.0 GeV/c. The elliptic flow signal v(2), measured using the 4-particle correlati

The behaviour of Rn-222 decay products at the air-glass interface and its implication for retrospective radon exposure estimates

Glass sheets investigated regarding their Po-210 signal originating from indoor radon exposure will have a depth distribution down to about 100 nm. The geometrical probability of implantation into glass of glass-attached radon daughter activity in one alpha recoil event is 50%. A particulate layer on the glass sheet (dust, grease or other particles) will stop the alpha recoil nucleus partly or tot

The role of the recording studio

The transformation from analogue to digital recording techniques has not only changed the ways of working for the studiotechnician, but affects the musician in the way he thinks about performance and sound, and therefore also his actual performance. The signal processing and the staging of the singing voice in the studio is both influenced by, and influences the estethics of popular song performa

Species interactions and community structure

In this theses I have focused on how the mechanisms of species interactions affect community structure. It is well known that certain species may have a particularly strong influence on the structure of a community. What is not fully understood is how to characterize these species that have such a strong impact on community structure. In my work, I have work tried to find out what makes such speci

Interstellar Intersubjectvity : The Significance of Shared Cognition for Communication, Empathy, and Altruism in Space

What kind of indispensable cognitive ability is needed for intelligence, sociability, communication, and technology to emerge on a habitable planet? My answer is simple: intersubjectivity. I stress the significance of intersubjectivity, of shared cognition, for extraterrestrial intelligence and interstellar communication, and argue that it is in fact crucial and indispensable for any successful in

Underlying Event measurements in pp collisions at root s=0.9 and 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC

We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at root s = 0 : 9 and 7 TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p(T),L-T in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions coll

Scanning gate imaging of quantum dots in 1D ultra-thin InAs/InP nanowires

We use a scanning gate microscope (SGM) to characterize one-dimensional ultra-thin (diameter approximate to 30 nm) InAs/InP heterostructure nanowires containing a nominally 300 nm long InAs quantum dot defined by two InP tunnel barriers. Measurements of Coulomb blockade conductance versus backgate voltage with no tip present are difficult to decipher. Using the SGM tip as a charged movable gate, w

Reactions and performance of Swedish peacekeepers in life-threatening situations

This study maps reactions activated in peacekeeping personnel by life-threatening situations and explores how these reactions affect psychological functioning. In-depth interviews were carried out with 30 informants from the Swedish peacekeeping force serving in Bosnia between 1993 and 1995. All participants had experienced shooting incidents or other highly threatening events. Two models were for

Validation of new superheavy elements and IUPAC-IUPAP joint working group

The great chemist Glenn Seaborg has written a delightful little book "Man-made Transuranium Elements", published in 1963, in which he points out that: "The former basic criterion for the discovery of a new element - namely, chemical identification and separation from all previously-known elements - had to be changed in the case of lawrencium (element 103). This also may be true for elements beyond

Comparative study of absorption efficiency of inclined and vertical InP nanowires

Geometrically designed III-V nanowire arrays are promising candidates for optoelectronics due to their possibility to excite nanophotonic resonances in absorption spectra. Strong absorption resonances can be obtained by proper tailoring of nanowire diameter, length and pitch. Such enhancement of the light absorption is, however, accompanied by undesired resonance dips at specific wavelengths. In t

Street Art and Public Space : A digital archive

This paper aims to discuss street art as new form of art and activism of uncomissioned and unsanctioned artifacts including paintings, murals and various kinds of stencils, posters, and stickers applied in any public surface. As Bengtsen (2014) has argued street art is a sociocultural practice, which is performative, ephemeral, and site specific. Street art has much to tell us about the dialectics

Evaluation of the impact of a simple hand-washing and water-treatment intervention in rural health facilities on hygiene knowledge and reported behaviours of health workers and their clients, Nyanza Province, Kenya, 2008

Many clinics in rural western Kenya lack access to safe water and hand-washing facilities. To address this problem, in 2005 a programme was initiated to install water stations for hand washing and drinking water in 109 health facilities, train health workers on water treatment and hygiene, and motivate clients to adopt these practices. In 2008, we evaluated this intervention's impact by conducting

Factors affecting the local distribution of the Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis in Baltic offshore waters

The Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis is the main offshore wintering seaduckspecies in the Baltic region, although numbers have declined steeply since the early 1990s. The reasons for the decline are not well understood and information about habitat choice is scarce. Blue Mussels Mytilus edulis are the main food source for Longtailed Ducks in the southern Baltic Sea and here we have used both mod
