Carbon Ruins

An exhibition of the fossil era It is 2053. The Swedish government has just opened its landmark museum FOSSIL with its first exhibition Carbon Ruins. The exhibition and its grand opening is a celebration of the fact that global net-zero emissions of carbon dioxide were reached in 2050. Sweden, in line with its 2017 targets, reached net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases already in 2045, being the

Ultrasound for the Detection of Gallbladder Malignancy in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis

Background and Aims: In primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), the risk for gallbladder malignancy is increased. Surveillance imaging is used for early diagnosis. The study aims to assess the reliability of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the detection of gallbladder polyps in people with PSC and to define a polyp size as a cut-off at which cholecystectomy is indicated due to th

Midbrain area and the hummingbird sign from brain MRI in progressive supranuclear palsy and idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The main radiological finding in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is reduced midbrain volume. Both qualitative (e.g., hummingbird sign) and quantitative (e.g., area measurements) markers have been noted. Recent studies have shown a similar reduction also in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). The purpose was to investigate the reliability and accuracy of th

Is road-side fishpond water in Bangladesh safe for human use? An assessment using water quality indices

Pond water is used in everyday life by many people in Bangladesh, however, without sufficient and reliable information regarding water quality and pollution status. For this reason, geospatial analysis and mapping of water quality indices such as metal (MI), contamination (Cd), and physicochemical water quality index (WQI) were assessed to improve the understanding of potential pollution sources.

IL-6 and CRP are superior in early differentiation between mild and non-mild acute pancreatitis

Background The revised Atlanta classification on acute pancreatitis (AP) presents distinct criteria for severity categorization. Due to the lack of reliable prognostic markers, a majority of patients with AP are currently hospitalized and initially managed identically. As incidence and financial costs are rising the need for early severity differentiation will increase. This study aimed to investi

Whole gene family expression and drought stress regulation of aquaporins

Since many aquaporins (AQPs) act as water channels, they are thought to play an important role in plant water relations. It is therefore of interest to study the expression patterns of AQP isoforms in order to further elucidate their involvement in plant water transport. We have monitored the expression patterns of all 35 Arabidopsis AQPs in leaves, roots and flowers by cDNA microarrays, specially

Familial thrombophilia and lifetime risk of venous thrombosis

Background. We started a large multicenter prospective follow-up study to provide reliable risk estimates of venous thrombosis in families with various thrombophilic defects. Objectives: This paper describes data collected at study entry on venous events experienced before study inclusion, i.e. the baseline data. Patients/methods: All individuals (probands, relatives) registered in nine European t

Sibling risk of anxiety disorders based on hospitalizations in Sweden.

Aims: This study used nationwide hospital records to examine sibling risk of any type of anxiety disorder in Sweden over a 40-year period. Methods: This study, carried out between 1 January 1968 and 31 December 2007, of the entire population of Sweden, linked information on family relationships from the nationwide Multi-Generation Register with information from the nationwide Swedish Hospital Disc

Impact of formulation on the survivability of Lactobacillus reuteri after freeze-drying

Lactobacillus reuteri is known as probiotics with health benefits. Freeze-drying is frequently used to preserve probiotics and keep them alive. However, freeze-drying through freezing and drying might cause some damages to the probiotic’s cells. Formulation by protective agents including cryoprotectants and lyoprotectants prior to freeze-drying can prevent and reduce these damages. In this study,

Infant outcome after active management of early-onset fetal growth restriction with absent or reversed umbilical artery blood flow

Objective: To describe the short- and long-term outcomes of infants with early-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR) and umbilical artery absent or reversed end-diastolic flow (AREDF), delivered before 30 weeks' gestation and managed proactively. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of fetuses delivered for fetal indication before 30 completed weeks' gestation that had early-onset FGR (de

Evaluation of migration analysis with AI-based CT-RSA and preoperative 3D-planning in total hip arthroplasty

Background and purpose — Computed tomography (CT) has become a valuable tool for preoperative planning and perioperative, real-time navigation during total hip arthroplasty (THA). CT can also quantify postoperative implant migration without the need for implanted bone markers, making it a promising alternative to the current gold standard radiostereometric analysis (RSA). Our aim was to evaluate t

Adaptation of soil microbial growth to temperature : Using a tropical elevation gradient to predict future changes

Terrestrial biogeochemical feedbacks to the climate are strongly modulated by the temperature response of soil microorganisms. Tropical forests, in particular, exert a major influence on global climate because they are the most productive terrestrial ecosystem. We used an elevation gradient across tropical forest in the Andes (a gradient of 20°C mean annual temperature, MAT), to test whether soil

Pituitary Metastases : A Nationwide Study on Current Characteristics with Special Reference to Breast Cancer

Objective To investigate the contemporary presentation of pituitary metastases. Patients Thirty-eight patients diagnosed with pituitary metastases from 1996 to 2018 in Sweden. Methods Pituitary metastases were confirmed by histopathology (n = 27) or considered highly likely according to radiological findings, including rapid tumor progression (n = 11). Medical records were reviewed and sellar imag

Eftersom verket i ocDuring the last couple of years, the Patent and Market Court of Appeal (“PMCA”) have handled multiple cases where the plaintiff has sued the defendant for damages for copyright infringement after the defendant in a previous trial has submitted evidence to which the plaintiff have copyright. Such a trial involves a conflict between the right to fair trial and the right of possession of copyrighted

Across landscapes and seascapes : The movement ecology of diving and flying guillemots and gulls during breeding

Some seabirds we encounter only fleetingly, as they fly by as we walk along the beach, or perhaps meet far out at sea when we take a boat trip. Others though we are more familiar with, such as the ‘seagulls’ that many will not even turn their head to appreciate. Yet, all seabirds have remarkable stories to tell, and we are fortunate now to live at a time where we can follow individual birds as theMost seabirds breed colonially, at which time they make central-place foraging trips. Parents must collect food both for themselves and for egg production/chick-rearing. How should they forage? I followed five species across two sites in Sweden in the Baltic Sea using GPS and time-depth recorder (TDR) devices, giving information on both flight and diving activity. I use a movement ecology approach
