Quarrying for Augustus: Gebel el-Silsila as a Source for Early Roman Monuments at Dendera

This paper presents a selection of epigraphic documents dispersed over three quarry faces (C11–C13) in the Main Quarry (Q34) at Gebel el-Silsila’s east bank, dating from the reign of the Emperor Augustus. The aim is to describe and decipher the various marks and depictions, and to translate the Demotic and Greek texts, in order to determine for what structure the stone from the quarry was intendedThis paper presents a selection of epigraphic documents dispersed over three quarry faces (C11–C13) in the Main Quarry (Q34) at Gebel el-Silsila’s east bank, dating from the reign of the Emperor Augustus. High strain-rate tensile testing and viscoplastic parameter identification using microscopic high-speed photography

A combined experimental/numerical method for determination of constitutive parameters in high strain-rate material models is presented. Impact loading, using moderate projectile velocities in combination with small specimens (sub mm) facilitate tensional strain rates in the order of 10(4)-10(5) s(-1). Loading force is measured from one-dimensional wave propagation in a rod using strain gauges and A combined experimental/numerical method for determination of constitutive parameters in high strain-rate material models is presented. Friendship Habits Questionnaire : A measure of group- versus dyadic-oriented socializing styles.

Friendships are central to our social lives, yet little is known about individual differences associated with the number of friends people enjoy spending time with. Here we present the Friendship Habits Questionnaire (FHQ), a new scale of group versus dyadic-oriented friendship styles. Three studies investigated the psychometric properties of group-oriented friendships and the relevant individual

A market for citizenships: Should citizenship be commodified?

Starting from the assumption that citizenship is propertythat would be more valuable if it were transferable, the paper explores the idea of commodification of citizenship. The paper provides arguments in favor of commodification and recommendations to how the market for citizenships should be designed. A market for citizenships could result in an improved matching between employer and employee whStarting from the assumption that citizenship is valuable private property that would be even more valuable if it were transferable, the paper explores the idea of commodification of citizenship. Social Engineering : A study in awareness and measures

In our technology-based society, there has been a clear focus on technical weaknesses to information security. This study will present another danger that is just as important to be aware of and is just as lethal, Social Engineering. This is an attack against the human element of security. This study covers a basic description of social engineering as well as a more thorough description of how the

Humanitarian Satellites : a remote sensing approach to built-up area estimation in refugee camps

The determination of the built-up area of a refugee camp is an important task as it can be used for estimating the population. While high resolution satellite imagery can be costly, since 2015 Sentinel-2 data has become available through the European Space Agency. Sentinel-2 offers 10 m resolution images with frequents updates. In this paper three methodologies are compared for the purpose of esti

Techno-Economic Analysis of Dye Separation in Textile Recycling

This study determines the technical and economic feasibility of separating dye from a process filtrate in industrial textile recycling using electrocoagulation or sequences of membrane filtration with microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis. The lower requirements for treating this stream, compared to previously researched dyehouse effluents, left treatments not good eCost efficient membrane filtration can make textile recycling more sustainable by separating the dyes from the solvents. To make the textile industry sustainable it must become circular by recycling textiles. Currently textile recycling use, discard and emit water, chemicals, water-based solvents, and dye when these could instead be used cyclically. For example, the solvents used to remove the dye

Value-at-Risk Estimation Under Shifting Volatility

Due to the Basel III regulations, Value-at-Risk (VaR) as a risk measure has become increasingly important in Europe for financial institutions. But even though it has become an important risk measure, both internally within company reporting and externally due to legislation, there is no one single way to forecast VaR that has yet proven to be superior. The aim of this paper is to examine differen

Analysis of design options and trade-offs for road tunnels incorporating suppression systems

The possibility of trade-offs in road tunnel design incorporating suppression has been evaluated. Different tunnel configurations and ventilation conditions considered to identify potential trade-offs, offering options of design alternatives for future substantial cost-benefit estimates. Suppression systems are regularly used in Australia and Japan. The interest regarding suppression systems in tu

Comparative study between numerical and analytical groundwater modelling

This study compares analytical and numerical models for groundwater modelling. The focus of comparison is to investigate the change of the analytical results when there is only a partial penetration of the aquifer. Two methods of comparison are used, the first one consisting of calculating a radial distance from a shaft to the point where the drawdown is 0.3 meters with both models. The second metCan pen and paper groundwater models compete with computer programs? Could something as simple as a pen and paper equation on the back of an envelope compete with advanced and expensive computer programs? Surprisingly, the answer could be yes for sandy soils. When modelling how a construction project will affect the groundwater surface, it’s easy to assume that the more advanced the model is, the

Simulation of THz Quantum Cascade Lasers

Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) have since their invention in 1994 become a crucial source for mid-infrared and THz radiation. Mid-infrared QCLs have achieved room temperature operation while THz QCLs have not. As such, simulations are an important tool in order to achieve a THz QCL operational at room temperature. This work uses a simulation package based on a nonequilibrium Green’s function model Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) can be designed to emit radiation in the Terahertz (THz) range. For these frequencies, which are faster than electronics and slower than infrared light, there are currently only few devices facing a wide potential of applications. The realization of room temperature operation of THz QCLs would enable practical use in e.g. spectroscopy and public safety. The question i

Severe intestinal dysbiosis is prevalent in primary Sjögren's syndrome and is associated with systemic disease activity.

BACKGROUND: Altered microbial composition of the intestine, commonly referred to as dysbiosis, has been associated with several autoimmune diseases including primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). The aims of the current study were to study the intestinal microbial balance in pSS and to identify clinical features associated with dysbiosis.METHODS: Forty-two consecutive pSS patients and 35 age-matched aAltered microbial composition of the intestine, commonly referred to as dysbiosis, has been associated with several autoimmune diseases including primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS). Energy security in a decarbonised transport sector: A scenario based analysis of Sweden's transport strategies

Previous research has shown that it is possible to decarbonise Sweden's road transport sector. This study develops a scenario based method and analyses the influence of external factors on energy security, focusing on passenger and freight transport. It does so by analysing the vulnerabilities and capabilities of five different climate mitigation strategies, investigating previous security scenariPrevious research has shown that it is possible to decarbonise Sweden's road transport sector.
