Ploidy and clinical characteristics of childhood acute myeloid leukemia: A NOPHO-AML study

We report the first large series (n=596) of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) focusing on modal numbers (MN) from the population-based NOPHO-AML trials. Abnormal karyotypes were present in 452 cases (76%) and numerical aberrations were present in 40% (n=237) of all pediatric AML. Among patients with an abnormal karyotype, the MN 46 was most common (n=251; 56%) of which 36 (8%) were pseudodipl

Review of LCA studies of solid waste management systems - Part I: Lessons learned and perspectives.

The continuously increasing solid waste generation worldwide calls for management strategies that integrate concerns for environmental sustainability. By quantifying environmental impacts of systems, life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool, which can contribute to answer that call. But how, where and to which extent has it been applied to solid waste management systems (SWMSs) until now, and which l

Mercury (Hg) Transport in a High Arctic River in Northeast Greenland

In a warming climate, mercury (Hg) pathways in the Arctic can be expected to be affected. The Hg transport from the high arctic Zackenberg River Basin was assessed in 2009 in order to describe and estimate the mercury transported from land to the marine environment. A total of 95 water samples were acquired and filtered (0.4 mu m pore size), and Hg concentrations were determined in both the filter

Review of LCA studies of solid waste management systems - Part II: Methodological guidance for a better practice.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is increasingly used in waste management to identify strategies that prevent or minimise negative impacts on ecosystems, human health or natural resources. However, the quality of the provided support to decision- and policy-makers is strongly dependent on a proper conduct of the LCA. How has LCA been applied until now? Are there any inconsistencies in the past practice

WrbA bridges bacterial flavodoxins and eukaryotic NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductases

The crystal structure of the flavodoxin-like protein WrbA with oxidized FMN bound reveals a close relationship to mammalian NAD(P) H:quinone oxidoreductase, Nqo1. Structural comparison of WrbA, flavodoxin, and Nqo1 indicates how the twisted open-sheet fold of flavodoxins is elaborated to form multimers that extend catalytic function from one-electron transfer between protein partners using FMN to

Understanding quality data correctly : a randomized comparison of presentation formats among cancer patients and relatives

Background: Patient representatives are increasingly engaged in quality in health care, and even though quality data are publicly available, correct interpretation may be challenging. We designed a randomized study with the primary aim to examine the association between preferred data presentation format and the interpretation of quality data among cancer patients and relatives. Material and metho

Brands Under Siege

Purpose: To explore how different B2B companies within the plastic industry are adapting and managing their brand under siege in regards to the environmental pressure from stakeholders. Methodology: This study takes a qualitative research approach, combining primary and secondary data. To create an understanding of the plastic industry, three B2B companies were interviewed in order to investigate

Early-stage detection of bark beetle infested spruce forest stands using Sentinel-2 data and vegetation indices

Sverige har The European spruce bark beetle is an insect that is often referred to as a pest. Responsible for the destruction of over 150 million m3 of Norwegian spruce forest in Europe over the last 50 years makes this insect one of the major disturbances to the forest industry. With global warming at large, changes of the distribution of the bark beetle have emerged with large outbreaks now regularly occurr

A GPS-Based Methodology to Analyze Environment-Health Associations at the Trip Level : Case-Crossover Analyses of Built Environments and Walking

Environmental health studies have examined associations between context and health with individuals as statistical units. However, investigators have been unable to investigate momentary exposures, and such studies are often vulnerable to confounding from, for example, individual-level preferences. We present a Global Positioning System (GPS)-based methodology for segmenting individuals' observati

Controls of spatial and temporal variability in CH4 flux in a high arctic fen over three years

The aim of this study was to establish the main drivers of the spatial variability in growing season CH4 flux within an arctic wetland ecosystem. During 3 years (2011-2013) we measured CH4 flux and potential drivers, e.g., CO2 fluxes (net ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration), temperature, water table depth, pore-water concentration of organic acids
