Biochar increases soil microbial biomass but has variable effects on microbial diversity : A meta-analysis

Biochar has been extensively studied as a soil amendment for carbon sequestration and for improving soil quality; however, a systematic understanding of the responses of soil microbial biomass and diversity to biochar addition is lacking. Here, a meta-analysis of 999 paired data points from 194 studies shows that biochar increases microbial biomass but has variable effects on microbial diversity.

The firefly genus Pteroptyx Olivier revisited (Coleoptera Lampyridae: Luciolinae)

The synchronous firefly genus Pteroptyx Olivier is reassessed from morphological, molecular, and habitat perspectives in Malaysia, and includes some reliably associated females described from morphological features and internal female reproductive anatomy. Phylogenetic analyses using combined morphological and molecular data (where available) for 158 taxa supported all the major features of the ex

Convergence and divergence emerging in climatic controls of polynomial trends for northern ecosystem productivity over 2000–2018

Southwest China has been the largest terrestrial carbon sink in China over the past 30 years, but has recently experienced a succession of droughts caused by high precipitation variability, potentially threatening vegetation productivity in the region. Yet, the impact of precipitation anomalies on the vegetation primary productivity is poorly known. We used an asymmetry index (AI) to explore possi

Perceived information after surgery for colorectal cancer - an explorative study.

Aim: With fast track surgery and shorter hospital stay, discharge from hospital after cancer surgery is becoming more challenging for the individual patient. The aim of this study was to explore how patients perceive information after surgery for colorectal cancer, what their information needs are and to determine factors affecting received information. Method: One hundred patients filled in the q

Light vs. heavy sedation during mechanical ventilation after oesophagectomy--a pilot experimental study focusing on memory.

BACKGROUND: To assess and compare the feasibility and stressful memories of light vs. heavy sedation during post-operative mechanical ventilation. METHODS: Randomized clinical trial in one general intensive care unit (ICU) in a Swedish university hospital. Thirty-six adults were randomly assigned to receive either light [Motor Activity Assessment Scale (MAAS) 3-4] or heavy (MAAS 1-2) sedation with

Monitoring finer-scale population density in urban functional zones : A remote sensing data fusion approach

Spatial distribution information on population density is essential for understanding urban dynamics. In recent decades, remote sensing techniques have often been applied to assess population density, particularly night-time light data (NTL). However, such attempts have resulted in mapped population density at coarse/medium resolution, which often limits the applicability of such data for fine-sca

Examination of Water Damage Statistics in the Nordic Countries to Identify and Suggest Preventive Cost-effective and Sustainable Measures during the Maintenance and Operation Phase

Water damage in the indoor environment is a rising issue within Nordic countries with about 90 000 cases in appx. 6.5 millioninsurance is reported annually in Sweden, and corresponding numbers are in Denmark and Norway. The question thenbecomes what type of measures residents, building managers, and insurance companies can take in the maintenance andoperation phase to decrease the impact of the wa

High-Performance Masonry Walls for Energy and Resource Efficient Building Envelopes

Externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) was used to increase load bearing capacity of light weight aggregate concrete (LWA) masonry walls subjected to eccentric axial compression. Ladder type masonry reinforcement, high strength steel wire strips and glass fiber mesh were used for strengthening of eleven, 2.4 m high, 0.5 m long and 0.1 m thick walls. The reinforcement was applied on the dry wall sur

Using powered mobility as a therapeutic intervention in infants and children with disabilities: Lessons learned from studying typically developing infants aged 3-12 months

E-poster, 2-minute presentation. ABSTRACT: Background: A study of typically developing infants testing joystick-operated powered wheelchair was part of the Driving to Learn project. The original aim was to find a pattern in achievements among participants with profound cognitive disabilities by comparing with young infants. Method: Re-analysis of video-data collected with typically developing infa

Optimal growth temperature of Arctic soil bacterial communities increases under experimental warming

Future climate warming in the Arctic will likely increase the vulnerability of soil carbon stocks to microbial decomposition. However, it remains uncertain to what extent decomposition rates will change in a warmer Arctic, because extended soil warming could induce temperature adaptation of bacterial communities. Here we show that experimental warming induces shifts in the temperature–growth relat

Dilemmas on emicizumab in children with haemophilia A : A survey of strategies from PedNet centres

Introduction: Haemophilia A care has changed with the introduction of emicizumab. Experience on the youngest children is still scarce and clinical practice varies between haemophilia treatment centres. Aim: We aimed to assess the current clinical practice on emicizumab prophylaxis within PedNet, a collaborative research platform for paediatricians treating children with haemophilia. Methods: An el

Asymmetric temperature effect on leaf senescence and its control on ecosystem productivity

Widespread autumn cooling occurred in the northern hemisphere (NH) during the period 2004-2018, primarily due to the strengthening of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Siberian High. Yet, while there has been considerable focus on the warming impacts, the effects of natural cooling on autumn leaf senescence and plant productivity have been largely overlooked. This gap in knowledge hinders our un

The effect of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose on health-related quality of life in iron-deficient patients with acute heart failure : the results of the AFFIRM-AHF study

AIMS: Patients with heart failure (HF) and iron deficiency experience poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We evaluated the impact of intravenous (IV) ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) vs. placebo on HRQoL for the AFFIRM-AHF population.METHODS AND RESULTS: The baseline 12-item Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ-12), which was completed for 1058 (535 and 523) patients in the FCM and p

Salinity mitigates cadmium-induced phytotoxicity in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) by limiting the Cd uptake and improved responses to oxidative stress : implications for phytoremediation

Cadmium (Cd) contamination and soil salinity are the main environmental issues reducing crop productivity. This study aimed to examine the combined effects of salinity (NaCl) and Cd on the physiological and biochemical attributes of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.). For this purpose, 30-day-old plants of quinoa genotype “Puno” were transplanted in Hoagland's nutrient solution containing diverse

Shifts in microbial stoichiometry upon nutrient addition do not capture growth-limiting nutrients for soil microorganisms in two subtropical soils

Microbial stoichiometry has become a key aspect in ecological research as shifts in microbial C:N, C:P and N:P ratios upon nutrient addition are presumed to give insight into relative nutrient limitations for soil microorganisms–with far-reaching implications for biogeochemical processes. However, this expectation has never been tested against direct methods of microbial growth responses to nutrie

Direct and Legacy Effects of Spring Temperature Anomalies on Seasonal Productivity in Northern Ecosystems

Warmer or cooler spring in northern high latitudes will, for the most part, directly impact gross primary productivity (GPP) of ecosystems, but also carry consequences for the upcoming seasonal GPP. Spatiotemporal patterns of these legacy effects are still largely unknown but important for improving our understanding of how plant phenology is associated with vegetation dynamics. In this study, imp
