Von Economo neurons are selectively targeted in frontotemporal dementia.

Von Economo neurons (VEN) are bipolar neurons located in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the frontoinsular cortex (FI), areas affected early in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), in which VEN may constitute a selectively vulnerable cellular population. Aim A previous study has shown a selective loss of VEN in FTD above other neurons in the ACC of FTD. The aim of this stud

Measurement of D*(+/-) meson production and determination of F-2(c(c)over-bar) at low Q(2) in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA

Inclusive production of D* mesons in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA is studied in the range 5 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2 of the photon virtuality and 0.02 < y < 0.7 of the inelasticity of the scattering process. The observed phase space for the D* meson is (pT) (D*) > 1.25 GeV and |eta( D*)| < 1.8. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 348 pb(-1) collected with the H1 detector. S

Current carbon balance of the forested area in Sweden and its sensitivity to global change as simulated by Biome-BGC

Detailed information from the Swedish National Forest Inventory was used to simulate the carbon balance for Sweden by the process-based model Biome-BGC. A few shortcomings of the model were identified and solutions to those are proposed and also used in the simulations. The model was calibrated against CO2 flux data from 3 forests in central Sweden and then applied to the whole country divided int

One Step Forward and One Step Back. State regulation of environment and sustainable development through the use of the Education Act, school curricula and syllabuses (1990-2010)

The aim of this sociology of law-orientated article is to analyse and describe legislative and regulatory processes concerning the task given to schools focusing on environment and sustainable development. We are describing the policy-making processes in this field from 1990 to 2011. The study involves key interviews and content analysis of national policy documents as well as legal sources, in or

SMQT-based Tone Mapping Operators for High Dynamic Range Images

In this paper, tone mapping operations based on the nonlinear successive Mean Quantization Transform (SMQT) are proposed in order to convert high dynamic range images to low dynamic range images. A SMQTbased tone mapping applied on the luminance channel is derived as well as a SMQT-based method working directly on all RGB channels. Both methods are compared to other state-of-the-art methods and pr

Cost and time overrun in construction projects in a multicultural setting

Delays and cost overruns are frequent problems in the construction industries of both developed and developing countries. Studies aimed at identifying the causes are often undertaken with just a broad appreciation of the construction process and frequently do not deal with multicultural issues when considering the reasons for overruns. The paper critically reviews existing attempts to uncover the

Simulation of robot paths and heat effects in welding

Simulering kan även vara ett kThe objective of this thesis is to develop a simulation tool and a method by which robot trajectories, temperature histories, residual stresses and distortion can be analysed and optimized off-line. This was performed by integrating robot simulation software with finite element analysis software. A special interface was created which facilitated information exchange between the two software progra

Criteria for the classification of monoclonal gammopathies, multiple myeloma and related disorders: a report of the International Myeloma Working Group

The monoclonal gammopathies are a group of disorders associated with monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. The characterization of specific entities is an area of difficulty in clinical practice. The International Myeloma Working Group has reviewed the criteria for diagnosis and classification with the aim of producing simple, easily used definitions based on routinely available investigations

Conformational entropy changes upon lactose binding to the carbohydrate recognition domain of galectin-3.

The conformational entropy of proteins can make significant contributions to the free energy of ligand binding. NMR spin relaxation enables site-specific investigation of conformational entropy, via order parameters that parameterize local reorientational fluctuations of rank-2 tensors. Here we have probed the conformational entropy of lactose binding to the carbohydrate recognition domain of gale

Characteristics of Welding Fume Aerosol Investigated in Three Swedish Workshops

Potentially high human exposures to nanometer sized airborne particles occur due to welding and other thermal processes in industrial environments. Detailed field measurements of physical and chemical particle characteristics were performed in three work-shops in Sweden. Measurements were performed both in the plume 5-20 cm above the welding point and in the background air (more than 5 m away from

A tandem mass spectrometric approach to determination of chondroitin/dermatan sulfate oligosaccharide glycoforms

Dermatan sulfate (DS) chains are variants of chondroitin sulfate (CS) that are expressed in mammalian extracellular matrices and are particularly prevalent in skin. DS has been implicated in varied biological processes including wound repair, infection, cardiovascular disease, tumorigenesis, and fibrosis. The biological activities of DS have been attributed to its high content of IdoA(alpha 1-3)Ga

Supervisory Control of Wastewater Treatment Plants by Combining Principal Component Analysis and Fuzzy C-Means Clustering

In this paper a methodology for integrated multivariate monitoring and control of biological wastewater treatment plants during extreme events is presented. To monitor the process, on-line dynamic principal component analysis (PCA) is performed on the process data to extract the principal components that represent the underlying mechanisms of the process. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is used to

Rho-guanine nucleotide exchange factors during development: Force is nothing without control.

The development of multicellular organisms is associated with extensive rearrangements of tissues and cell sheets. The driving force for these rearrangements is generated mostly by the actin cytoskeleton. In order to permit the reproducible development of a specific body plan, dynamic reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton must be precisely coordinated in space and time. GTP-exchange factors tha

Cellular elements for seeing in the dark: voltage-dependent conductances in cockroach photoreceptors

BACKGROUND: The importance of voltage-dependent conductances in sensory information processing is well-established in insect photoreceptors. Here we present the characterization of electrical properties in photoreceptors of the cockroach (Periplaneta americana), a nocturnal insect with a visual system adapted for dim light. RESULTS: Whole-cell patch-clamped photoreceptors had high capacitances and

Centimeter-long III-Nitride nanowires and continuous-wave pumped lasing enabled by graphically epitaxial lift-off

It remains a big challenge to elongate one-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanowires (NWs), which can be attractive platforms for miniaturizing and/or integrating macroscopic devices, into centimeter-scale length. Herein, we report the innovative preparation of single-crystalline III-nitride NWs, with unprecedented length above 2 cm and the aspect ratio above 6000, by graphically epitaxial lifting-

What to share, when, and where : balancing the objectives and complexities of open source software contributions

Context:: Software-intensive organizations’ rationale for sharing Open Source Software (OSS) may be driven by both idealistic, strategic and commercial objectives, and include both monetary as well as non-monetary benefits. To gain the potential benefits, an organization may need to consider what they share and how, while taking into account risks, costs and other complexities. Objective:: This st

A route to commons-based democratic monies? Embedding the governance of money in traditional communal institutions

The financial crisis of 2008 resulted, among other, on a popular awareness that the monetary system was not working for the interest of the many. The blockchain technology that was launched soon after offered monetary activists and entrepreneurs a tool to re-imagine, re-claim and re-organize money along a vague ideal of a commons paradigm. A wave of monetary experimentation ensued that took a most

Temperature-controlled structural alterations of an RNA thermometer

Thermoresponsive structures in the 5'-untranslated region of mRNA are known to control translation of heat shock and virulence genes. Expression of many rhizobial heat shock genes is regulated by a conserved sequence element called ROSE for repression of heat shock gene expression. This cis-acting, untranslated mRNA is thought to prevent ribosome access at low temperature through an extended secon
