On the Autonomy of the Process Region

An investigation of the autonomy of the process region at the tip of a crack is carried out. An elastic plastic linearly hardening material is assumed. A cohesive zone model with constant cohesive stress is chosen. The cohesive zone length is observed to decrease with decreasing hardening rates and increasing cohesive stresses. For a cohesive stress larger than about three times the yield stress t

Multi-Echelon Inventory Control with General Backorder Cost Structures and Emissions

The contribution of this licentiate thesis lies in the modelling of a multi-echelon inventory system with more general backorder cost structures. Backorder costs are traditionally assumed to be linear, whereas we consider structures that are more general functions of the customers’ time in backorder. Risk, Resilience and Insurance in Sudanese Pastoralism

The nomadic pastoralists of the Sahel are often identified as a group at the frontline of global climate change. Their existence in arid and semi-arid regions and their reliance on seasonal rainfall are among the factors that contribute to their vulnerability to drought and climate shocks. This study focuses on risks to pastoralists in Sudan, asking whether index-based livestock insurance, an innoPastoralism is a nomadic lifestyle and a livelihood system that revolves around raising livestock. By migrating seasonally in search of water and pasture for their animals, pastoralists are able to inhabit and make productive use some of the world’s harshest environments. In Sudan, where over 90% of the vast land area is covered by desert and drylands, pastoralism remains a vital feature of the co

Fossil and friction free : A critical discourse analysis of sustainability in EU freight policy

Policy on greening freight constitutes a recent addition to the discourse on sustainability in the EU. To stimulate economic growth, the EU also plans for freight transport activity to grow significantly over the coming decades. In this paper, drawing on critical discourse analysis and Marxian geographical thought, I show how the argument for implementing sustainable freight is constructed in EU f

A long and winding road: Differentiating human embryonic stem cells into dopaminergic neurons

Popular Abstract in English Parkinson’s disease is the second common neurological disease whose major clinical symptom is progressive impairment in the ability to control the body movements. The symptoms are mainly caused by the gradual loss of dopamine producing neurons in a very specific part of the brain, termed substantia nigra. Although there exist some drug and surgical therapies, those mosParkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Since the motor manifestations of the disease is associated with the loss of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, cell replacement therapy is a promising approach for treatment. Although several different cell types have been used in clinical trials, with the recent findings of somatic cell nuclear tr

Learning of agents with limited resources

In our research we investigate rational agent which consciously balances deliberation and acting, and uses learning to augment its reasoning. It creates several partial plans, uses past experience to choose the best one and, by executing it, gains new knowledge about the world. We analyse a possible application of Inductive Logic Programming to learn how to evaluate partial plans in a resource-con

Female Genital Mutilation in Senegal The role of Socio-Economic Risk Factors of Circumcision and Subsequent Effects of Circumcision upon Fertility and Marriage Markets

Female Genital Mutilation is widespread in sub- Saharan Africa despite being illegal in many countries. It has been shown in previous research that female genital mutilation occurs due to long standing tradition which creates difficulty in the elimination of the practice. In any case, the effects of mutilation can have long lasting effects on future demographics through impacts on future fertility

Moving beyond the auditory aspect of performing classical music: A reflection on musical expression with the body and face

Jag valde tre olika videos av framträdande, en live-konsert, en live-streamad konThis reflective part of my Bachelor’s degree started with an increased curiosity into how I move my body whilst at the piano. I wanted to reflect on how I perceive my own movements, on why I move like I do, and what purpose these movements may have beyond the way I need to move to handle any technical difficulties. I chose three different videos of performances, one live concert, one live streamed

The Courtyard Toolbox

In central Budapest, when the city of Pest was developing, urban policy led to small plots built on all four sides mak- ing up the larger neighborhood block structures. Each small lot was centered around its even smaller courtyard, lead- ing to a myriad of small open spaces with little sunlight or activity. Many of these plots today have fallen into disrepair, becoming parking lots or unused p
