Hybrid solutions that combine multiple renewable energy sources, such as solar power and hydro power, are gaining popularity as a means of meeting the growing energy demands while minimising environmental impacts, but also as an opportunity of connecting solar power plants to the grid in areas where this might not be possible unless large investments are made. This master thesis aims to evaluate t

As the phase change material (PCM), pure paraffin wax is mixed with CuO (high heat conduction) and Span-80 (as a dispersant) in this research. The CuO/paraffin nanocomposite PCMs is synthesized with mass fractions of 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9% and 1.2% by a two-step method. Dispersion stability and nanoparticle morphology of CuO/paraffin nanocomposite PCMs are analyzed by using a spectrophotometer and a sca

The free energy of binding between avidin and seven biotin analogues has been calculated with the molecular mechanics Poisson- Boltzmann surface area (MM/PBSA) method. We have studied how the force field and the method to generate geometries affect the calculated binding free energies. Four different force fields were compared, but we saw no significant difference in the results. However, mixing t

One of the world’s brightest and most powerful lights is created at MAX IV. Using the lights from MAX IV, scientists can understand how materials are built and how they can be used better than ever before. Exploring materials with lightsAt MAX IV, scientists accelerate electrons in a linear accelerator so that they travel at nearly the speed of light. The electrons then enter storage rings where

The transition towards renewable energy and electrification is expected to accelerate in the coming decades. This change is being studied by several actors, in Sweden most notably by Svenska kraft- nät, the Swedish TSO. They have recently constructed four different scenarios, two of which explore a future with a doubling of electricity consumption from year 2022 to year 2045. These two scenarios h

In order to decrease the dependence on fossil fuels it is of paramount importance that renewable sources are used as effectively as possible. Therefore it is necessary to store excess energy when supply is higher than de-mand. One way to do so is by storing the energy as compressed air in a porous aquifer. The Lund Sandstone in the Kyrkheddinge area, Skåne, southern Sweden, has previously been inv

The need for sustainable renewable energy has been increasing due to the negative impact of non-renewable energy sources. With the unstable and sporadic nature of sustainable renewable energy, flow batteries show immense potential in mitigating these issues. Traditional vanadium and zinc-based flow batteries, as well as new flow battery systems, are now being researched extensively. Vanadium and z

Utvecklingen av mer energieffektiva byggnader handlar idag till stor del om att använda mindre energi än gällande byggnormskrav. Ett sätt att bemöta de ständigt hårdare energikraven är att utnyttja byggnaders värmelagrande förmåga. För att kunna utnyttja en byggnads värmelagringsförmåga optimalt bör en tung stomme bestående av tegel, lättbetong, betong eller annat stenmaterial väljas, då dessa harThe development of more energy-efficient buildings is today mostly a matter of using less energy than current building norms requirements. A means of responding to the ever-tighter energy requirements is to make use of the energy-storing ability. In order to fully utilize a building's energy-storing ability, a heavy frame composed of brick, concrete, lightweight concrete or other stone materia

In the present study, according to the recirculation concept, a new elimination structure for the geyser in a cryogenic pipe is proposed. An eccentric spacer plate is used to stimulate the recirculation inside the cryogenic pipe. The geyser-elimination effect of the proposed structure is then validated and the elimination physics is explored. It is found that the geyser is successfully eliminated
