We report a simple, handy and affordable optical approach for precise number-of-layers determination of graphene on SiC based on monitoring the power of the laser beam reflected from the sample (reflectance mapping) in a slightly modified micro-Raman setup. Reflectance mapping is compatible with simultaneous Raman mapping. We find experimentally that the reflectance of graphene on SiC normalized t

We study the impact of stellar feedback in shaping the density and velocity structure of neutral hydrogen (H I) in disc galaxies. For our analysis, we carry out ~4.6 pc resolution N-body+adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamic simulations of isolated galaxies, set up to mimic a Milky Way and a Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. We quantify the density and velocity structure of the interstellar medium

We have developed a method to dock a transition-state structure into the active site of an enzyme. Such an approach is more discriminative than standard docking when looking for substrates of an enzyme, because a transition state has more sterical restrictions than a nonreactive state. We use an accurate and tailored force field for the transition-state for the hydroxylation reaction in cytochrome

Background. Neutrophils from patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are dysfunctional and thus a contributing factor to the risk of infections. The mechanisms for leucocyte dysfunction in CKD are not fully understood. It is known that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activates transcription of several genes encoding proinflammatory cytokines. We therefore aimed to study the effect of LPS on neutrophil

Under conservative assumptions about the Galaxy, the derived velocity of the Smith Cloud indicates that it will have undergone at least one passage of the Galactic disc. Using hydrodynamicsimulations, we examine the present-day structure of the Smith Cloud and find that a dark matter supported cloud is able to reproduce the observed present-day neutral hydrogen mass, column density distribution an

Here, we report on large-eddy simulation (LES) of supersonic flow, mixing, self-ignition, and combustion in a model scramjet combustor. The combustor has been experimentally investigated at DLR, German Aerospace Center Lampoldshausen and consists of a one-sided divergent channel with a wedge-shaped flame-holder: at the base of which, hydrogen is injected. This combustor has been extensively studie

Since 2010, the Chilean government has backed a progressive increase of non-conventional renewable energies sources (NCRES) to put forward the country's energy independence from fossil fuels, and therefore from imports, and to reduce its CO2 emissions. The analysis of the final energy consumptionchanges via a structural decomposition analysis, based on the Input-Output Tables for Chile in the peri

We have investigated the adsorption and decomposition of ethanol on the Rh(111) and Rh(5 5 3) surfaces at room temperature with special emphasis on the dehydrogenation. We use high resolution Core level photoemission and density functional theory (DFT) based simulations. A detailed analysis of the C1s core level spectra, including analysis of the vibrational fine-structure and comparison to calcul

Schlieren imaging has been established as a reliable optical measurement technique for flame visualizations and retrieval of laminar burning velocity information. However, it is off limited capability and adaptability due to the optical configuration of a conventional Schlieren setup. In this regard, background oriented Schlieren (BOS) provides a unique opportunity to quantitatively characterize d

We reconstruct Quantum Mechanics in a way that harmonizes with classical mechanics and electromagnetism, free from mysteries or paradoxes such as the collapse of the wave function or Schrödinger’s cat. The construction is inspired by de Broglie’s and Schrödinger’s wave mechanics, while the unifying principle is Hamilton’s principle of least action, which separates natural laws from particular circ

Replacing fossil jet fuel with biojet fuel is an important step towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from aviation. To this end, Sweden has adopted a GHG mandate on jet fuel, complementing those on petrol and diesel. The GHG mandate on jet fuel requires a gradual reduction in the fuel’s GHG emissions to up to 27% by 2030. This paper estimates the potential production of biojet fuel in S

The food industry is actively adopting carbon neutral strategies aligned with the principles of Industry 4.0 to establish long-term goals for reducing carbon emissions and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon food production industry. Industry 4.0, often referred to as the fourth industrial revolution, emphasizes the integration of digital technologies, automation, and data exchange into ma

Galectin-3 is involved in multiple pathways of many diseases, including cancer, fibrosis, and diabetes, and it is a validated pharmaceutical target for the development of novel therapeutic agents to address unmet medical needs. Novel 1,2-thiodisaccharides with a C-glycosylic functionality were synthesized by the photoinitiated thiol-ene click reaction of O-peracylated 1-C-substituted glycals and

The operation of next-generation particle accelerator facilities with increased beam power parameters and emphasis on performance and reliability signifies the need for experimental studies on material property degradation. Literature is particularly scarce regarding the effects of ionizing radiation damage on cavity components at applicable radiation conditions, with even less extant work studyin

Universal 3' or 5' Gene Expression

The Universal kits (formerly Next GEM Gene Expression) offer scalable whole transcriptome profiling at the single-cell level, with flexible sample input options. The 3' assay can be paired with cell surface protein staining, while the 5' assay supports full-length TCR/BCR sequencing, antigen specificity, CRISPR guide analysis, and cell surface protein profiling. For cost efficiency, samples can be

What do our students think about the Career programme?

Laman Magsudlu MSc in Strategic Communication, AzerbaijanParticipating in the Career Programme is a truly valuable experience. During our visit to Nederman, one phrase particularly resonated with me: 'We value people, not titles.' I think, it perfectly captured the essence of Swedish corporate culture. The in-depth presentations and open Q&A sessions gave us a clear understanding of how companies

Reflection seismic data were acquired in the Sudret area of Gotland between 6 and 13 November 2023. Objectives of the survey were to obtain images of the subsurface down to the Precambrian basement in the vicinity of two cored boreholes that had been drilled earlier down to about 800 m. The seismic profiles were positioned to provide a better understanding of the sedimentary strata and local struc
