microRNAs are small RNA molecules that can repress the expression of protein-coding genes post-transcriptionally. Previous studies have shown that microRNAs can also have alternative functions, including influencing target expression variation and covariation, but these observations have been limited to a few microRNAs. Here we systematically study microRNA alternative functions in mouse embryonic

Midbrain dopaminergic neurons exhibit a wide diversity in their projection patterns, disease vulnerability, and functions, playing key roles in voluntary motor control, cognition, and reward processing. Parkinson’s Disease, one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, is characterized by the selective degeneration of the A9 dopaminergic neuron subtype, leading to severe motor dysfunction. D

Accounting for 10 million deaths and 20 million new cases every year, cancer is one of the most common causes of death. The interest in trying to understand this lethal disease using mathematical models has increased steadily for many decades. Methods for boosting the immune system to better fight cancer (immunotherapy) have also been long present. However, the full potential of immunotherapy me

Acute leukemia affects individuals of all ages and encompasses a heterogeneous group of malignancies driven by genetic alterations that give rise to leukemia stem cells (LSCs), which sustain self-renewal and drive the expansion of abnormal cells. Based on how these alterations affect maturation, acute leukemia is classified into acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Tracing cell lineage has not been considered feasible in humans due to the invasive procedures. However, by analysing somatic mutations acquired during cell division it is possible to compare the relationship between cells within an individual. Knowledge about cell lineage relationships can shed light on the origins of new cells. In order to track cell fate in humans, we are developing a method en

Anaerobic microorganisms play important roles in different biotechnological processes. Their complex metabolism and special cultivation requirements have led to less isolated representatives in comparison to their aerobic counterparts. In view of that, the isolation and cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms is still a promising venture, and conventional methodologies as well as considerations an
