Pollen and spore analysis is the most successfully used palaeobotanical discipline for reconstructing Holocene vegetation and climate history throughout the world. Subantarctic islands are very specific areas. They are located in the circum-Antarctic Southern Ocean in latitudes that are under strong influence of the southern westerly winds, and are characterised by a treeless, phanerogam-poor flor

Typisk HUS utlöses av tarminfektThis study investigated the pathogenesis of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). (1) The relative roles of lipopolysaccharide and Shiga-like toxin-2 were studied in a mouse model of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection. Both factors were found to be important for the virulence of the strain and contributed in an additive manner. The mouse model mimicked cert

Victims of human trafficking have been designated as a group of migrants in need of special assistance and protection. As a result, a whole legal framework has been developed revolving around this group. Within Europe, this framework operates on two levels: the Council of Europe and the EU. EU law has added an additional layer of sophistication with its second generation of asylum legislation. The

The decay kinetics of the 2.88 eV emission of pure and Bi-doped CaWO4 crystals has been studied in the temperature region of 4.2-300 K. The decay components connected with the radiative transitions from the triplet excited states of regular WO42- oxyanionic complexes and WO42- complexes perturbed by Bi3+ ions (WO42-(Bi3+) centres) have been identified. It is shown that WO4(Bi3+) centres can be exc

Routine postmortem radiography was done in 234 consecutive perinatal autopsies. Using ossification centre appearance and length of femoral shafts as variable it was a very useful and dependable method for estimating gestational age and intrauterine growth. In this way important conclusions can be drawn as to the reason for intrauterine growth deviations. Also many, sometimes diagnostic, abnormalit

We have studied the use of complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) among 233 consecutive breast cancer patients operated on at the Lund University Hospital, Sweden between 2002 and 2004. Questionnaires were administered preoperatively (n = 233), and again 3-6 months post-operatively (n = 167) and one year after surgery (n = 88).

Aim To identify alcohol biomarker and psychometric measures that relate to drivers' blood alcohol concentration (BAC) patterns from ignition interlock devices (IIDs). Design, setting, participants, measurements In Alberta, Canada, 534 drivers, convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), installed IIDs and agreed to participate in a research study. IID BAC tests are an established pr

We develop an approximation for the optical potential in a solid, valid at intermediate energies, i.e. energies greater than 50 eV. The present approximation for the optical potential builds on the GW-expression. We separate the RPA polarization propagator into a core electron and a valence electron, and can then achieve a corresponding separation of the optical potential. We apply this method to

The Nordic region, comprising primarily Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, has many of the necessary characteristics for being at the forefront of genome-based precision medicine. These include egalitarian and universal healthcare, expertly curated patient and population registries, biobanks, large population-based prospective cohorts linked to registries and biobanks, and a wi

Although numerous genes are known to regulate serum lipid traits, identified variants explain only a small proportion of the expected heritability. We intended to identify further genetic variants associated with lipid phenotypes in a self-contained population of Sorbs in Germany. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglyceride (TG)

Background: Nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neural factor (BDNF) are important for brain function and detectable in the blood. This study explored the longitudinal associations of physical activity and body fat with serum NGF and BDNF in children. Methods: Two waves of measurements were performed 2 years apart in 8- to 11-year-old children, including physical activity using the ActiGra

Carbonyl 13C relaxation experiments to study protein backbone dynamics have recently been developed. However, the effect of three-bond 13C-13C couplings on transverse relaxation measurements appears not to have been considered, and the potential to detect and quantify motions on the millisecond to microsecond time scale has not been fully explored. The present paper addresses these two issues. Sim
