Majorana bound states in chains of interacting quantum dots

This thesis concerns the creation of Majorana bound states (MBSs) -- a type of condensed matter excitations theorized to have exotic and technologically valuable properties. In particular, they could be used to store and manipulate quantum information in a protected way, forming the building blocks of a topological quantum computer. The search for MBSs has been intense since it was realized that t

Chemical mapping of DNA and counter-ion content inside phage by energy-filtered TEM

Double-stranded DNA in many bacterial viruses (phage) is strongly confined, which results in internal genome pressures of tens of atmospheres. This pressure is strongly dependent on local ion concentration and distribution within the viral capsid. Here, we have used electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy-filtered TEM (EFTEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy to provide such chemic

Electron relaxation in the CdSe quantum dot - ZnO composite: prospects for photovoltaic applications.

Quantum dot (QD)-metal oxide composite forms a "heart" of the QD-sensitized solar cells. It maintains light absorption and electron-hole separation in the system and has been therefore extensively studied. The interest is largely driven by a vision of harvesting the hot carrier energy before it is lost via relaxation. Despite of importance of the process, very little is known about the carrier rel

High-order harmonic generation with mu J laser pulses at high repetition rates

We investigate the generation of high-order harmonics using laser pulse energies in the few-mu J range at high repetition rates. We analyse how the conversion efficiency is influenced by the tight focusing geometry required for the generation of high-order harmonics under these conditions. A generalized phase-matching model allows us to discuss macroscopic phase effects independent of focal length

Inbreeding and homozygosity in breast cancer survival.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) help to understand the effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on breast cancer (BC) progression and survival. We performed multiple analyses on data from a previously conducted GWAS for the influence of individual SNPs, runs of homozygosity (ROHs) and inbreeding on BC survival. (I.) The association of individual SNPs indicated no differences in th

An adaptive filter model of cerebellar zone C3 as a basis for safe limb control?

The review asks how the adaptive filter model of the cerebellum might be relevant to experimental work on zone C3, one of the most extensively studied regions of cerebellar cortex. As far as features of the cerebellar microcircuit are concerned, the model appears to fit very well with electrophysiological discoveries concerning the importance of molecular layer interneurons and their plasticity, t

A high pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of oxidation and reduction of Rh(100) and Rh nanoparticles

We have studied the oxidation and reduction of Rh(100) and SiO2 supported Rh particles using high pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We show that the formation and reduction of Rh bulk oxide can be followed in situ in O-2 and CO pressures in the range of 0.1 Torr. In general, the oxidation/reduction processes are similar on Rh(100) and the nanoparticles, but there are significant differenc

Charge Carrier Generation and Transport in Different Stoichiometry APFO3:PC61BM Solar Cells

In this paper we studied carrier drift dynamics in APFO3:PC61BM solar cells of varied stoichiometry (2:1, 1:1, and 1:4 APFO3:PC61BM) over a wide time range, from subpicoseconds to microseconds with a combination of ultrafast optical electric field probing and conventional transient integrated photocurrent techniques. Carrier drift and extraction dynamics are strongly stoichiometry dependent: the s

Detector and dispersive delay calibration issues in broadband 2D electronic spectroscopy

Precision of two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy can be affected by imprecise calibration of the optical spectrometer and coherence time delay line. This would result in 2D spectral line shapes with twisted phase, where absorptive and dispersive parts of the signal are mixed and unrecoverable. We demonstrate two efficient and easily implementable techniques for precise spectrometer and we

Development and Validation of a Risk Score Predicting Substantial Weight Gain over 5 Years in Middle-Aged European Men and Women

Background: Identifying individuals at high risk of excess weight gain may help targeting prevention efforts at those at risk of various metabolic diseases associated with weight gain. Our aim was to develop a risk score to identify these individuals and validate it in an external population. Methods: We used lifestyle and nutritional data from 53 degrees 758 individuals followed for a median of 5

Social capital, desire to increase physical activity and leisure-time physical activity: A population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between social capital (trust) and leisure-time physical activity. STUDY DESIGN: The 2004 Public Health Survey in Skåne is a cross-sectional study. METHODS: In total, 27,757 individuals aged 18-80 years answered a postal questionnaire (59% participation). Logistic regression models were used to investigate the associations between trust, desire to incr

Fast Monolayer Adsorption and Slow Energy Transfer in CdSe Quantum Dot Sensitized ZnO Nanowires

A method for CdSe quantum dot (QD) sensitization of ZnO nanowires (NW) with fast adsorption rate is applied. Photoinduced excited state dynamics of the quantum dots in the case of more than monolayer coverage of the nanowires is studied. Transient absorption kinetics reveals an excitation depopulation process of indirectly attached quantum dots with a lifetime of similar to 4 ns. Photoluminescence

Signatures of Wigner localization in epitaxially grown nanowires

It was predicted by Wigner in 1934 that an electron gas will undergo a transition to a crystallized state when its density is very low. Whereas significant progress has been made toward the detection of electronic Wigner states, their clear and direct experimental verification still remains a challenge. Here we address signatures of Wigner molecule formation in the transport properties of InSb nan

A tailored biocompatible neural interface for long term monitoring in neural networks

Neural interface electrodes that can record from neurons in the brain for long periods of time will be of great importance to unravel how the brain accomplishes its functions. However, current electrodes usually cause significant glia reactions and loss of neurons within the adjacent brain parenchyma. To address this challenge, a novel, polymer-based neural probe, with protrusions tailored to the

Cost-effectiveness of infliximab versus conventional combination treatment in methotrexate-refractory early rheumatoid arthritis: 2-year results of the register-enriched randomised controlled SWEFOT trial.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness of infliximab versus conventional combination treatment over 21 months in patients with methotrexate-refractory early rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: In this multicentre, two-arm, parallel, randomised, active-controlled, open-label trial, rheumatoid arthritis patients with <1 year symptom duration were recruited from 15 rheumatology clini

End-stage renal disease and low level exposure to lead, cadmium and mercury; a population-based, prospective nested case-referent study in Sweden

Background: Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) cause toxicological renal effects, but the clinical relevance at low-level exposures in general populations is unclear. The objective of this study is to assess the risk of developing end-stage renal disease in relation to Cd, Pb, and Hg exposure. Methods: A total of 118 cases who later in life developed end-stage renal disease, and 378 matched
