The pre-industrial natural carrying capacity is believed to have limited the human population in Iceland to a maximum of fifty to sixty thousand inhabitants. Since AD 1800 the Icelandic population has gradually grown up to nearly 300 thousand in 2005. In this paper a simple approach is used to evaluate the potential population size that the pre-industrial Icelandic environment could possibly susta

To verify the fundamental Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule for the first time experimentally, we measured the helicity dependent total photoabsorption cross section with circularly polarized real photons and longitudinally polarized nucleons in the photon energy range 0.68-1.82 GeV with the tagged photon facility at ELSA. The experiment was carried out with a 4pi detection system, a circularly

Collecting enough labeled images to train an artificial neural network (ANN) is a common struggle since the process is tedious, time consuming and expensive. CellaVision, a company that creates analyzers that automate the process of finding and pre-classifying abnormal blood cells using machine learning, runs into this problem regularly. When new generations of analyzers are being produced, the im

Abstract: The Demand-Control Model and the Effort-Reward-Imbalance Model are two models of occupational health that connects psychosocial work factors to health. Related research has often focused on small and homogenous samples and has rarely taken into account the eventual intermediating effect of different welfare regimes. Furthermore results regarding gender have been ambiguous. Through logist

Om ett sådant material kan framställas meTo build materials of proteins is an art that nature is a specialists in. But when we actively try to design protein materials, it becomes clear how complex and hard to control the biophysical world is. This master thesis aims to lay the foundation for a protein material that forms and dissociates as a response to changed Ca2+ concentration. If such a material is to be produced with an ordered str

Sedan denna förändring får nu Copyright och Internationell Privaträtt arbeta tiSince the emergence of the Internet in the early 1990’s a lot has changed in the world and the area of law is no exception. Important for this essay is that the internet created a strong connection between the areas of Private International Law and Copyright, mainly since copyright infringements became transnational to a higher extent and happened more through ubiquitous medias. These two legal fi

Positive aspects of fathers’ involvement in parenting are broadly recognized, but challenges faced by fathers are often neglected and postpartum depression (PPD) is still mainly considered as a problem of mothers. Yet, new evidence suggests a similar prevalence of about 10 % in fathers and mothers. The present study investigated paternal PPD, its character and its links to attachment styles, paren

Clarias gariepinus has huge economic and nutritive value in Cameroon but yet it is not widely cultivated. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of water quality and water exchange (which are some factors that affect fish growth) on the growth and survival of this species along the Mt Cameroon region. An experimental setup was used in the lab of the University of Buea campus to emulate

Massive MIMO has attracted many researchers’ attention as it is a promising technology for future 5G communication systems. To characterize the propagation channels of the massive MIMO and to evaluate system performance, it is important to develop an accurate channel model for it. In this thesis, two correlative models, i.e., the Kronecker model and the Weichselberger model, and a cluster-based m

The field of particle physics is ever evolving. With the recent advent of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) it is possible that the long sought for Higgs boson is detected. While this is not certain even if it is found it is likely that it will need more precise methods of investigation. For this and other reasons, a new collider called the International Linear Collider (ILC) is being planned. This

In this paper we calculate the limit of the $L^1$-means of certain weighted Poisson kernels in the unit disc and show that this limit is equal to $1$. Our result is in sharp contrast to a recent result by George F\"ulep who has shown that some related limit superiors are strictly greater than $1$. Limits of this type are of interest from the point of view of approximation theory.

I begin my thesis by linking the rise of buzz marketing in recent years to general economic, medial and social developments in society, while mainly focusing on the shift from a modern to a post-modern pattern of production and consumption. I also point out the great symbolic significance that consumption has as a signifier of a personal identity in contemporary society. I then go on to investigat

The use of a label for locally produced products is seen as a good way of promoting these products in Söderslätt and, thereby, promoting regional development. The only common meaning of the concept ?local? is the reference to a geographical area, even though the size of the area differs. Local products are associated with characteristics such as environment, ethics, health, quality and support of

Stakeholders’ participation has been recognized as a pillar for a transition toward a more sustainable society. However, there is little empirical evidence concerning the viability of participation mechanisms at large scale. This research analyzes a popular referendum process in Switzerland against a law that would have been a step toward a low-carbon society in the Canton of Fribourg. Aiming to i
