Since the founding of the field of Western esotericism, The Theosophical Society has been counted among the more obvious cases of the field's objects of study, regardless of how "Western esotericism" itself has been defined. This paper explores the connection between Western esotericism as a research field, esotericism as its object of study, and the Theosophical Society as an example of esoterici

We study the geometric significance of Leinster’s notion of magnitude for a compact metric space. For a smooth, compact domain X in an odd-dimensional Euclidean space, we show that the asymptotic expansion of the function MX(R) = Mag(R·X) at R = ∞ determines the Willmore energy of the boundary ∂X. This disproves the Leinster-Willerton conjecture for a compact convex body in odd dimensions.

Immanuel Kant wrote that the Conflict of the Faculties is a constant struggle for primacy that causes strife and ultimately undermines scholarly solidarity. His argument is a complex one, as it relates to the very ability of how to judge proper authority, what constitutes scientific truth, and how to create respect amongst a community of people representing divergent opinions. Whilst such consider

Regional cerebral blood flow was measured with the 133-Xenon inhalation method in seven healthy subjects with orthostatic hypotension not due to autonomic failure (i.e. non-neurogenic clinical disorder). Measurements were performed during supine rest and during head-up tilt (70 degrees). All subjects had a consistent drop in systolic blood pressure and the typical symptomatology of orthostatic hyp

In this paper we describe the first decades of the history of the Swedish ATM (Automated teller machine). Sweden was one of the pioneers in using ATMs, starting with cash dispensers or cash machines in 1967. The first machine was made operational and shown to the press on July 6, 1967, in Uppsala at Upsala Sparbank, only one week after the first cash machine in the world was made operational in th

The COVID-19 pandemic illustrated many of the challenges with using science to guide planning and policymaking. One such challenge has to do with how to manage, represent and communicate uncertainties in epidemiological models. This is considerably complicated, we argue, by the fact that the models themselves are often instrumental in structuring the involved uncertainties. In this paper we explor

Digital sports technologies, such as the Strava app, have become the norm rather than the exception in physical activities and are introducing new realities to human existence. This thesis in Media and Communication studies examines the experience of females using the fitness app Strava to track their running activities. It investigates their engagement with the platform’s affordances and features

The focus of this paper is the nominative/genitive case alternation phenomenon, often called ga/no conversion, which occurs in the Japanese language. In some kinds of subordinate clauses, the nominative case marker ga can be replaced with the genitive no to mark the subject of a sentence, without causing any particular difference in meaning. A survey concerning said phenomenon has been carried out

Formulating and implementing agricultural policies are important for the development of the agricultural sector and the rural population. The process of policy making is a political bargain between politicians and citizens. The outcome of this process, the policies, cannot be expected to be Pareto efficient resource allocations since altruistic behaviour is not very likely. All participants in the

This study explores the development of the Concerted European Response from adoption of the European Action Plan by the euro group, to the adoption of the Economic Recovery Plan by the European Council. The theoretical framework employed to assess this process is based on the works of the Copenhagen School on securitisation. However, In order to analyse the economic and financial crisis through a

The thesis examines selected “cultural conflicts” that can be said to exist in majority/minority relations within the context of Western liberal democratic societies. A normative analysis regarding when it is justified for a minority to claim certain rights with reference to culture is conducted. Four controversial examples are included: The ban of religious symbols in public schools in France (th
