KAP1 controls endogenous retroviruses in embryonic stem cells

More than forty per cent of the mammalian genome is derived from retroelements, of which about one-quarter are endogenous retroviruses (ERVs). Some are still active, notably in mice the highly polymorphic early transposon (ETn)/MusD and intracisternal A-type particles (IAP). ERVs are transcriptionally silenced during early embryogenesis by histone and DNA methylation (and reviewed in ref. 7), alth

How to think about a place not yet : Studies of affordance and site-based methods for the exploration of design professionals' expectations in urban development processes

ABSTRACTAs a part of a democratic demand for transparency in urban development processes it is important that design professionals hold the ability to scrutinise their own work process, and at certain stages let go of predefined ideas of future realities. This work revolves around how design professionals perceive options for design in such situations. A basic assumption in this work is that a des

KAP1-Mediated Epigenetic Repression in the Forebrain Modulates Behavioral Vulnerability to Stress

KAP1 is an essential cofactor of KRAB-zinc finger proteins, a family of vertebrate-specific epigenetic repressors of largely unknown functions encoded in the hundreds by the mouse and human genomes. Here, we report that KAP1 is expressed at high levels and necessary for KRAB-mediated repression in mature neurons of the mouse brain. Mice deleted for KAP1 in the adult forebrain exhibit heightened le

General purpose technology diffusion and labour market dynamics : A spatio-temporal perspective

This dissertation aims at advancing the knowledge about the role of the labour market in the process of the technology-induced economic transformation, taking into account the variety of factors involved at micro-, meso-, and macro-levels of the economy and at different geographical scales. Empirically, the dissertation investigates the co-evolutionary dynamics of industrial restructuring and work

Support for public research spin-offs by the parent organizations and the speed of commercialization

We empirically analyze whether support by the parent organization in the early (nascent and seed) stage speeds up the process of commercialization and helps spin-offs from public research organizations generate first revenues sooner. To identify the impact of support by the parent organization, we apply multivariate regression techniques as well as an instrumental variable approach. Our results sh

Navigating Identity, Ethnicity, and Politics: A Case Study of Gender Variance in the Central Highlands of Vietnam

Based on ethnographic data collected among the Bahnar ethnicgroup in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, I discuss the livedexperiences of masculine performing people (assigned female atbirth) whose gender characteristics blur the boundaries betweenlesbian and transgender. In reviewing non-normative genderpractices in supernatural rituals in Southeast Asia and in Vietnam Iexplore the links between t

The relationship between the metabolic syndrome and arterial wall thickness : A mosaic still to be interpreted

Background and aims We aimed to identify clusters of metabolic syndrome (MetS) components, risky for extremely high intima-media thickness. Methods We studied 41,513 volunteers (men and women) from eleven cohorts worldwide, participating in the MARE (Metabolic syndrome and Artery REsearch) Consortium. Results Specific clusters of MetS components - high triglycerides-high blood pressure-abdominal o

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Tetrakis(dimethylsulfoxide)platinum(II) Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate)

Crystals of Pt(DMSO)4(TFMS)2 have been prepared by dissolution of platinum(II) hydroxide in a solution of CF3SO3H in DMSO and subsequent evaporation. The structure was determined by use of a CAD-4 diffractometer with monochromatic Mo Kα radiation. The space group is PFull-size image (<1 K) with Z = 2, a = 8.630(2), b = 9.557(3), c = 16.659(3) Å, α = 73.33(2), β = 77.38(2) and γ = 79.19(3)°. Interactive voice response with feedback intervention in out-patient treatment of substance use problems in adolescents: a randomized controlled trial on substance use, stress and psychiatric symptoms.

Purpose: Substance use disorders and problematic substance use are common problems in adolescence and young adulthood. Brief personalized feedback has been suggested for treatment of alcohol and drug problems and poor mental health. This repeated measurement randomized controlled trial examines the effect of an interactive voice response (IVR) system for assessing stress, depression, anxiety and s

Entanglement detection schemes and coherent manipulation of spin in quantum dots

Men detta innebär inte bara en begräThe work contained in this thesis deals with two closely related topics. Papers I-III deal with charge transport statistics in nanoscale devices to investigate the presence of entanglement in the constituent electrons. We identify the contributions of entangled electron pairs to the current cross-correlations as a signature of entanglement. Paper IV treats the electric control of a quantum dot bas

Optimal geometry of lateral GaAs and Si/SiGe quantum dots for electrical control of spin qubits

We investigate the effects of the orientation of the magnetic field and the orientation of a quantum dot, with respect to crystallographic coordinates, on the quality of an electrically controlled qubit realized in a gated semiconductor quantum dot. We find that, due to the anisotropy of the spin-orbit interactions, by varying the two orientations it is possible to tune the qubit in the sense of o

Targeting Children Online : Young internet users and producers in the commercial media environment

The overall goal of this thesis is to contribute to a critical understanding of children’s commercial online environment as spaces for children’s everyday life activities and participation, and as spaces for comm
