The Bible appears regularly in Margaret Atwood’s novels, from The Edible Woman in 1969 to The Testaments in 2019. Atwood’s characters do not tend to be religious, but like most people in the Western world, they encounter the Bible in schools, at funerals, in headlines, advertisements, and occasionally from religious people themselves. Atwood’s Bible is a Christian Bible, the references running fro

Agatha Christie’s canon from the ‘Golden Age’ of crime fiction is sometimes said to be surpassed in popularity only by the Bible. But is a large and faithful readership the only connection between the ‘Queen of Crime’ and the ‘Book of Books’? In this chapter, I argue that Christie’s popular detective hero, Hercule Poirot, becomes a mode of adapting religion to the modern world of Europe after the

In this chapter, I address the “containment” of meaning in relation to questions of authorship (or lack of authorship) in biblical studies. By revisiting Roland Barthes’ and Michel Foucault’s critiques of the author figure, I suggest that the implication for biblical studies is the opening of meaning-making beyond the figure of the author in his or her original context. Engaging with Brennan Breed

Improved self-esteem and body image, as well as reduced experiences of weight stigma are important patient-reported obesity treatment outcomes. However, more knowledge is needed about how individuals who have undergone metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) perceive themselves and their bodies and use different coping strategies in relation to body image and self-esteem long-term after MBS. In this

The seasonal migrations of insects involve a substantial displacement of biomass with significant ecological and economic consequences for regions of departure and arrival. Remote sensors have played a pivotal role in revealing the magnitude and general direction of bioflows above 150 m. Nevertheless, the take-off and descent activity of insects below this height is poorly understood. Our lidar ob

In this work we introduce a new method for manufacturing minimal submanifolds of Riemannian manifolds of codimension two. For this we employ the so called complex-valued eigenfunctions. This is particularly interesting in the cases when the Riemannian ambient manifold is compact. We then give several explicit examples in important cases.

In this thesis, wastewater reuse was investigated from technological and social perspectives, based onwhich the thesis was divided into two parts. In the first part, the removal of chemical and microbialcontaminants by full-scale and pilot-scale granular activated carbon (GAC) filters, in different processcombinations, was examined. In the second part, the perceptions of reused wastewater were stu

How do nondescript spaces of transfer (Warped Space), as such, relate to the wide-spread headphone culture in those spaces? To address this question, the chapter presents a reading of Vidler (1999) on Warped space, Simmel (the Stranger) and Bull (2012) on Toxic Audiotopia. The chapter concludes that Warped spaces or spaces of transfer call for people not to connect, and it was also found that this

Changes in the energy landscape relating both to the ambitions of a green energy transformation as well as increasing global security concerns, have led to increased attention to new energy carriers. These can serve the role of allowing for the electrification of transport and decarbonization of industries as well as to reduce the effects of variation in many sustainable energy sources such as winChanges in the energy landscape relating both to the ambitions of a green energy transformation as well as increasing global security concerns, have led to increased attention to new energy carriers. The term non-cardiac syncope includes all forms of syncope, in which primary intrinsic cardiac mechanism and non-syncopal transient loss of consciousness can be ruled out. Reflex syncope and orthostatic hypotension are the most frequent etiologies of non-cardiac syncope. As no specific therapy is effective for all types of non-cardiac syncope, identifying the underlying hemodynamic mechanism is th

Aeolian transport rates decreases during wet conditions as the threshold shear velocity for initiation of transport increases over moist sand. This study investigates the influence of surface moisture on meso-scale aeolian transport simulations. Yearly transport rates towards the dunes are simulated with ten different threshold-based models to account for moisture effects. The ten models show larg
