Autumn phenology and morphometrics in the Garden Warbler Sylvia borin at the Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden

Trapping and ringing near ecological barriers can provide useful information about the migration strategies of bird species. In this paper we analyzed ringing data of the Garden Warbler, collected within the period of 1950-2008 at the Ottenby Bird Observatory, south-eastern Sweden, and describe patterns in migration phenology, morphometrics and fuel load. A total of 4,351 individuals aged as eithe

Feeding damage to plants increases with plant size across 21 Brassicaceae species

Plant size is a major predictor of ecological functioning. We tested the hypothesis that feeding damage to plants increases with plant size, as the conspicuousness of large plants makes resource finding and colonisation easier. Further, large plants can be attractive to herbivores, as they offer greater amounts and ranges of resources and niches, but direct evidence from experiments testing size e

Search for quark contact interactions in dijet angular distributions in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector

Dijet angular distributions from the first LHC pp collisions at center-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV have been measured with the ATLAS detector. The dataset used for this analysis represents an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb(-1). Dijet chi distributions and centrality ratios have been measured up to dijet masses of 2.8 TeV, and found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. Analys

Ultraviolet-B radiation and nitrogen affect nutrient concentrations and the amount of nutrients acquired by above-ground organs of maize

UV-B radiation effects on nutrient concentrations in above-ground organs of maize were investigated at silking and maturity at different levels of applied nitrogen under field conditions. The experiment simulated a 20% stratospheric ozone depletion over Portugal. At silking, UV-B increased N, K, Ca, and Zn concentrations, whereas at maturity Ca,Mg, Zn, and Cu increased and N, P and Mn decreased in

InAs Nanowire Devices and Circuits

Fram tills nyligen har utvecklingen mot högre prestanda och fler transistoSince the introduction of the transistor and the integrated circuit, the semiconductor industry has developed at a remarkable pace. By continuously fabricating smaller and faster transistors, it has been possible to maintain an exponential increase in performance, a phenomenon famously described by Moore’s Law. Today, billions of transistors are integrated on a single chip and the size of a transi

Sensory Aspects of Knee Injuries

Traditionellt sett har man inom ortopedin främst diskuterat vikten av främre korsbandets mekaniskt stabiliserande funktion; en skada, rupturProprioceptive ability was estimated in different groups of patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury as well as in different groups of healthy uninjured individuals. In study I, patients with poor outcome of the ACL injury – i.e. persistent symptoms of instability – were compared with patients with few symptoms after ACL injury, as well as with a control group. The results showed that

Stopover behaviour in migratory songbirds: timing, orientation and departures

Behaviours affecting where, when and how long to stay at stopover sites will affect how successful the overall migration will be, which has significant consequences for the overall fitness and mortality of the birds. The main purpose of this work was to investigate stopover behaviours in free-flying m

Pharmacoepidemiologic studies on cardiovascular drugs - with special reference to the effectiveness and safety of blood pressure lowering drugs

Den optimala effektiviteten ("efBackground: Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke are the main causes of morbidity and mortality in developed countries and hence constitute a large public health problem. Cardiovascular drugs are used in an effort to prevent (e. g. blood pressure lowering drugs (BPLD) and lipid lowering drugs) and palliate (e. g. nitrates) these disorders. The efficacy and safety of these drugs have been evalu

Lund on Informatics

This anthology comprises thirteen chapters exploring and explaining informatics at Lund University. The book represents several perspectives and views on the subject of informatics held by researchers at the Informatics Department, and also how the subject has evolved and developed over the years. The central theme is that the design of information systems links social and organisational perspectiv

Frequency and Intensity of Alcohol Consumption: New Evidence from Sweden

This paper provides an extensive analysis of the demand for alcohol in terms of total quantity and quantity subdivided into frequency and intensity demand. The analysis compares across alcohol types (beer, wine and spirits), alcohol drinking pattern (average drinker vs. binge drinkers) and also how these decisions differ across gender. The analysis is based on a large sample of cross-sectional dat
