Association between cerebral microbleeds and hypertension in the Swedish general population “Good Aging in Skåne” study

Published 10 September 2019 Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) on MRI are frequent in healthy aging individuals but precede ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and dementia. Different etiologies have been suggested for nonlobar CMB, which have a stronger connection to hypertension (HT) than do lobar CMB. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of CMB and the association between nonlobar/lobar CMB and d

The Long-Lasting Influenza: The Impact of Fetal Stress During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic on Socioeconomic Attainment and Health in Sweden, 1968–2012

Published 13 September 2019 The 1918 influenza pandemic had not only a massive instant death toll but also lasting effects on its survivors. Several studies have shown that children born in 1919, and thus exposed to the H1N1 virus in utero, experienced worse health and socioeconomic outcomes in older ages than surrounding birth cohorts. Joint comorbidities among Swedish carriers of haemophilia: A register‐based cohort study over 22 years

Published 11 October 2019 Carriers of haemophilia suffer a significant risk for joint comorbidities. This risk seems to correlate to the factor activity. Our findings underline the impor‐tance of regular clinical follow‐up of carriers at HTCs. New publication in Wiley.Read more here.

A registry-based study evaluating overall survival and treatment duration in Swedish patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer treated with enzalutamide

Published 21 October 2019 Enzalutamide can be used to effectively treat mCRPC patients in daily clinical settings, despite the patients being older and less healthy than those enrolled in the previous randomised, clinical registration studies. Read the full paper here.

The impact of parenthood on risk of registration for alcohol use disorder in married individuals: a Swedish population-based analysis

Published 1 November 2019 In married individuals, resident children are associated with a reduction in basal risk for AUD which is stronger in mothers than fathers and with younger v. older children. This effect is also evident during high-risk periods. In mothers, our results are consistent with a largely causal effect. New publication in Psychological Medicine.Read more here.

Long-term outcome after ischemic stroke in relation to comorbidity – An observational study from the Swedish Stroke Register (Riksstroke)

Published 24 November 2019 Comorbidity in stroke is common, but comprehensive reports are sparse. We describe prevalence of comorbidity and the prognostic impact on mortality and functional outcome in a large national ischemic stroke cohort. New publication in SAGE Journals

Risk of being born preterm in offspring of survivors with childhood or adolescent central nervous system tumor in Sweden

Published 25 November 2019 An increasing number of patients with central nervous system (CNS) tumor could survive to reproductive age. However, it is largely unknown whether the history of CNS tumor might affect pregnancy outcome. We aimed to explore the risk of being born preterm among children of CNS tumor survivors. Gender influence on the bipolar disorder inpatient length of stay in Sweden, 2005–2014: A register-based study

Published 27 November 2019 The influence of gender on bipolar disorder is controversial and it is unclear if inpatient care differs between men and women. Here, we investigate for gender differences in the inpatient length of stay for Swedes admitted for bipolar disorder and explore other factors that could explain any observed association. Weight and height separated provide better understanding than BMI on the risk of revision after total knee arthroplasty: report of 107,228 primary total knee arthroplasties from the Swedish Knee Arthroplasty Register 2009–2017

Published 5 December 2019 Obesity defined as increased BMI is commonly associated with higher revision rates following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We examined the effect of BMI on the rate of revision after TKA, for both infection and other reasons, and analyzed weight and height separately to provide better understanding of the risk profile. Mortality patterns in long-term survivors of childhood or adolescent central nervous system tumour in Sweden

Published 12 December 2019 A growing number of young patients with central nervous system (CNS) tumour survived for more than five years. However, these long-term survivors might be at risk of multiple late effects thus leading to a higher risk of late mortality. We aimed to explore the risk of late mortality and the pattern of mortality among long-term survivors of childhood or adolescent CNS tum

Quality indicators and their regular use in clinical practice: results from a survey among users of two cardiovascular National Registries in Sweden

Published 16 April 2019 Most respondents used quality indicators from the two cardiovascular NQRs infrequently (<3 times/year). The results indicate that linking registration of quality indicators to using them for QI activities increases their routine use and makes them meaningful tools for professionals. Patient-reported outcome and experience measures for diabetes: development of scale models, differences between patient groups and relationships with cardiovascular and diabetes complication risk factors, in a combined registry and survey study in Sweden.

Published 17 April 2019 The questionnaire measures and detects differences in patient well-being, abilities and judgements of diabetes care, and identifies areas for improvement. To further improve diabetes care, we conclude that patient-reported measures are important supplements to cardiovascular and diabetes complication risk factors, reflecting patient experiences of living with diabetes and d

A natural history model for planning prostate cancer testing: Calibration and validation using Swedish registry data.

Published 7 May 2019 Recent prostate cancer screening trials have given conflicting results and it is unclear how to reduce prostate cancer mortality while minimising overdiagnosis and overtreatment. Prostate cancer testing is a partially observable process, and planning for testing requires either extrapolation from randomised controlled trials or, more flexibly, modelling of the cancer natural h

Effect of early supported discharge after stroke on patient reported outcome based on the Swedish Riksstroke registry.

Published 9 May 2019 The efficacy of early supported discharge (ESD) has not been tested in current stroke care setting, which provide relatively short hospital stays, access to hyper-acute therapies and early carotid stenosis interventions. This study aimed to compare patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) among patients with stroke that received modern stroke unit care with or without ESD. New
