Aim: This position paper focuses on healthy ageing for the frailest and institutionalized older adults in the context of the recent pandemic. The paper aims to identify and discuss hindering and promoting factors for healthy ageing in this context, taking both health safety and a meaningful social life into account, in a pandemic situation and beyond. Background: The recent COVID-19 pandemic has h

TMJ autopsy specimens were studied macroscopically and arthrographically with respect to the disc position in the sagittal and the coronal planes. After single-contrast arthrography of the lower joint space, the specimens were cryosectioned. The arthrographic findings were correlated with the morphological findings. Anterior disc position was found in about two thirds and sideways disc displacemen

We present the first in Poland, and among the first in Europe, cases of transcatheter implantation of the biological Sapien Edwards valve in the pulmonary position. The valves were implanted successfully without periprocedural complications in 2 patients with postoperative right ventricular outflow tract dysfunction.

We investigated how the degree of autotrophy/heterotrophy and organism trophic position influenced the bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in 10 benthic river food webs consisting of terrestrial detritus, periphyton, invertebrates, and age-0 brown trout (Salmo trutta) in southern Sweden. Concentrations of PCBs increased with trophic position, estimated from delta(15)N and delta(13)

The luminescence from single quantum dots has been studied. Single dot photoluminescence was studied under continuous as well as under pulsed excitation. Time-resolved studies revealed fast relaxations in quantum dots. The time resolved measurements were fitted with a set of rate equations. Blinking in the luminescence was observed on a few quantum dots. The polarization of the emission from singl

Abstracts, NS166: Emerging Quantum Technologies Heike Riel (overview talk): Computing – From Bits to Qubits Classical computers which represent information as bits have evolved over many years in an unprecedented way and became ubiquitous in our life. Today these classical technologies based on miniaturization are reaching their limits and new computing paradigms are in quest to reduce power consu

Studies on several target factors like specific antigens, biomarkers and cellular signals involved in High-risk Human papilloma virus (HR-HPV) infection and its mediated immune response aid in narrowing the gap to generate effective therapeutic solutions for oropharyngeal carcinomas. Thus, establishing cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL) lines will aid in investigating and carrying out functional studie

Localisation and mapping algorithms for smartphones have in recent years seen a renewed interest due to their technological advancements. Using these systems to generate an indoor blueprint where none is available or incomplete is useful in tracking applications. This report examines the possibilities of adapting ARcore as a tool for map generation of unknown areas. Several tests of indoor environ

Streaming applications, such as MPEG video encoders or sensor processing pipelines, are increasing in complexity as well as the diversity of platforms that they run on. The toolchains handling these applications must keep up with this increase at all levels of abstraction. The Actor Machine (AM) is an intermediate representation in the toolchain that we make use of. Large AMs are difficult to work

AbstractSepsis is a clinical condition that develops when the immune system over-response to an infection. Sepsis can lead to organ failure as well as subsequent death. Sepsis-induced host response involves neutrophil over activation which can lead to self tissue damage. Neutrophils are the first line of defence, play a critical role in controlling the infection. Upon activation, neutrophils relea

Only three days after the beginning of the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima, Japan, on 11 March 2011, the German government ordered 8 of the country's 17 existing nuclear power plants (NPPs) to stop operating within a few days. In summer 2011 the government put forward a law - passed in parliament by a large majority - that calls for a complete nuclear phase-out by the end of 2022. These governmen

The IEEE 1687 standard describes reconfigurable structures allowing to flexibly access the instruments existing within devices (e.g., to support test, debug, calibration, etc.), by the use of configurable modules acting as controllable switches. The increasing adoption of this standard requires the availability of algorithms and tools to automate its usage. Since the resulting networks could inevi

Abstract in UndeterminedSmall-scale distributed generators connected tothe low voltage network are generally operated with unitypower factor. However, controlling their reactive powerinjection would have an impact on the voltage at theirconnection point, if the network is sufficiently weak andinductive. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how asmall-scale distributed generator connected to

The share of distributed generation (DG) is expected to grow rapidly in near future. In addition to the environmental aspects also the shorter construction period can be considered as a key driving force accelerating the development. However, there are also some severe barriers before wider employment of DG is possible. One of them is the connection to network or grid. Especially when we consider

Complex software must be tested carefully. This thesis looks at how automated testing can be improved for Alstom’s Radio Block Centre, a system that supervises trains and sends movement authorities. The work focuses on three practical ways to improve an existing automated test setup. First, it studies how the test suite can be made more dynamic by introducing randomness into current test scripts.
